Shaoling Legend
« on: September 08, 2010, 06:45:33 AM »
i just got a Sintax game i've never heard of before (much thanks to codeman38 for the tip) - its called "Shaoling Legend: Hero, the saver" on the label and "Fantasic ShaoLin Kungfu" on the title screen. its a beat em up, basicallly the same engine as True Three Kingdoms and stuff, but the music is stolen from one of the KOF games this time. and its pretty good! i'll get some pics and stuff later, maybe a video. but im gonna be away for a few days, so probably not until tuesday/wednesday.

The stolen music was practically a giveaway anyway, but the fact that there's a Sintax-credited game with KOF music makes the suspicion even stronger.

Yeah, could be.. or at least BBD. although i guess Sintax did some development in-house too. and it seems like only a few earlier Sintax games actually credit BBD - i wonder if BBD just developed those early games (True Three Kingdoms, Harry Boy etc) and Sintax used BBD's engines to make some of their later stuff?
oh yeah, and i will of course be attempting to dump Shaoling Legend when I get back.. just don't expect much, given my lack of success with pretty much any other unlicensed game. grr.
btw, my favourite bit of sintax-english so far - "in order to united the An Ancient Name for China". looks like they forgot to fill one in :D

it does seem to be basically the same game as True Three Kingdoms/Sangokushi Act C, anyway, just with a different storyline and new(?) graphics and stuff - the playable characters are all pretty much just sprite edits of the TTK ones.

well i tried to dump it - it seems to have the same bit-inverting deal going on as Pokemon Sapphire, only its way more varied. and that didnt make Sapphire run anyway, so I can't be arsed right now. maybe later. Where are all the damn GB ASM programmers when you need them.
hmmm. i just had a look at the PCB. theres a damn battery on there! even though the game has no discernable save feature. wtf sintax.

Maybe the PCB was originally intended for an RPG but then they couldn't sell enough copies so they decided to use their unsold copies for another game instead, other than that I really can't see why anyone would use a save feature for a beat em up. :P

Yeah, thats the only thing I can think of. True Three Kingdoms even had a save feature, so they must have specifically removed it from this game, and surely the only reason they'd do that is if they intended to put it on a batteryless PCB to save money. so I guess in the end they just had too many battery PCBs left over. but hey free battery :D
