UM5678 to VT02 (aka NES)?
« on: August 20, 2023, 01:40:17 PM »
Hello, bggamers! It's been a while since I've posted here. I wanted to ask something, is there a way to convert UM5678 games to use a standard NES mapper? See, I've seen a collection of NES 2.0 roms on archive.org (Google is your friend) and I noticed a few mapper hacks under the "compatibility hacks" folder of one of the files.

I noticed NewRisingSun (a user here)'s name next to a few compatibility hacks, tried to research to see if there was any information on this. Unfortunately, I could not find any information.

So to get back on top, I've embedded a UM5678 version of the Star Ally game (one of my favorites from Jungletac, prob bcuz it's lowkey addictive space shooter in vein of Gun Nac), which I found in Project Plug 'n' Play. Seeing as the similar game Aero Fighter has a VT02 variation, I was wondering if anyone has the ability to convert the Star Ally UM5678 variation to VT02. Thank you!

Porting UM6578 to VT03 (not VT02) involves reprogramming large parts of the game and can only be done with source code or weeks of hacking. Although superficially similar in terms of capabilities, UM6578 and VT03 are very different "under the hood".

I didn't ask about a VT03 variation. Star Ally already has an existing VT03 variation. I was wondering about VT02 in particular.

No, a VT02 port is not possible at all. UM6578 uses 4 bits per color, just like VT03. VT02 is like a regular NES, just 2 bits per color. UM6578 just does not look as good as VT03 because the master palette is still the same 52 colors as NES. A UM6578 to VT02 port is completely impossible.

You haven't taken over shit, so stop pretending you did.

The only place to find a proper update is the Lost in Bygone Gaming blog, where I will post an update whenever I have one ready.

Wow.

Going off-topic, attempting to take over someone's dumping project and claim it without permission and then insulting the original person behind it? If you wanted to keep collecting the ROMs, you could've asked about it or even started your own set instead of being completely selfish about it.

And this is after all the other countless times I banned you off the forum.

You've been nothing but a selfish nuisance on this forum. Permanent ban.
