Fancy Mario hack
« on: June 14, 2016, 12:12:32 PM »
I've heard that Fancy Mario is a hack of Super Mario Bros. that adds vertical scrolling. But whenever I try it on an emulator, it still has horizontal scrolling but it's all glitched up.

Is this just an emulation problem or does it not actually have vertical scrolling? If it doesn't, what's it doing?

They mean mirroring and not like real scrolling. You can read more about it here http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/Mirroring
You can use Nestopia or some other emulators to edit rom headers to change mirroring. Actually original SMB rom have Vertical Mirroing. By changing it to Horizontal I get exactly the same glitches as in Fancy Mario
So chinese pirates do something like this with mirroring, get this effect and here it is! Absolutely "new version" of SMB for multicarts and it doesn't take much ROM space ;D And so this is exactly how this hack looks on real multicarts and real hardware consoles.

Yup, what he says.  It plays the same on single cart version as well.
