Unused drums and strange song found inside Digimon Advenure
« on: November 16, 2015, 10:22:25 PM »
I was bored recently, so I decided I'd use Audacity and use it's "Import Raw Data" feature to look inside GBA ROMS to listen to their samples...again. Then I decided, why not try Digimon Adventure? That game has some sampled drums in it...so I opened it. And I found much more than I expected. Not only did I find many more drum samples than are used in-game, but after it, there was a fully-streamed song.
This especially is interesting, seeing as I don't know why it's there...maybe they intended to use it as a level theme? The theme sounds as if it's a dance-style song. The song lasts dor about 30 seconds, and ends with a fade-out effect. What's even weirder is the fact is that the song isn't in there once, but TWICE. One after another.

Here is a dump of all the sample data in one WAV file:

As well as the individual song itself, complete with its duplicate.

I don't know what sample rate is actually used, but 11025hz sounds about right.
Does anyone know where this song is originally from, and what it might have been intended to use for? The song, as well as all the unused drum samples, are also probably in all the undumped hacked versions, seeing how the music and sound effects are identical.

Cant tell you about the theme intention for but most of the tutorials/blogs I have seen they say 12000hz is the right setup. I have done some test and it sounds good for me. I will try with Digimon Adventure

Figured I'd check Digimon Ruby, out of sheer curiosity, since that game uses PCM drums as well as a PCM title theme. (Even if it does play the latter-- the original Japanese TV series' song "Brave Heart"-- at a much higher sampling rate than it should...)

As if we needed any more proof that Vast Fame helped out with the sound programming on these platforming abominations, the drum samples are exactly the same between the two games, and in the same order. And as I expected, "Brave Heart" takes the place of the tune from Digimon Adventure immediately after the drums-- though in this case, there's only one loop of it, not two.

Come to think of it, the Digimon Adventure tune does kind of have a similar melody to "Brave Heart". Anyone with more knowledge of the series know if that's where it came from?

Edited to add: Oh, yeah, and based on the original recording of "Brave Heart", 11025 Hz is almost certainly the sampling rate they intended to use.

That would explain the lack of music there -  Digimon Ruby does almost the same thing, so maybe it's supposed to play there in that game as well, but due to very poor programming, it either just plays a buzzing sound or nothing at all. And none of the hacks bothered to fix it.
And if it was used, then it would probably play at a rate too high, like you said the theme from Digimon Ruby did. Can you figure out the rate that's used at the title screen in-game? I'd guess 16000hz, judging by my past experiences with this.
This isn't the only time where a pirate game company uses the wrong frequency for samples. Aladdin II for the Genesis seems to have all its sound effect samples recorded from Aladdin for the SNES (which it's based on) at 5200hz, which is already an extremely low quality, if you ask me, but the game plays them at an even worse 4200hz instead, making them all sound noticeably slowed down and lower pitched. There's also an unused "Genie win" sample jingle and a "press start" sample.

I managed to identify the song from Digimon Adventure - despite the apparent similarities to Brave Heart, it's actually "Happy Birthday" by Kyoko, which was used as the ending theme for the first Detective Conan movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x-7PGzl9ao

(there was an instrumental version on the CD single, but it looks like they didn't use it, they just repeated a segment from the intro at the point where the vocals would have kicked in)

as for why a Detective Conan song is in a Digimon game.. maybe they hadn't yet found a clean copy of Brave Heart to work with, and this was just in there as a similar-sounding placeholder?

I have also found out the frequency the drums play at and the title screen in Digimon Rub(r)y play at in-game: 22050hz. Which means that it plays twice the speed it should!
Here is the game's sample data again, this time at 22050hz. The drums sound right, but the music definitely doesn't.

And here's the isolated version of what the music would have sounded like in-game if it was used. That version of the music gives me a headache...

so I've been doing a bunch of digging into this game and found a whole bunch of unused music: https://tcrf.net/Digimon_Adventure_(Game_Boy_Advance)

There's a patch linked in that article which will restore Happy Birthday to the title screen (it actually plays at the correct sampling rate!), fix the random-enemy-changes-the-music bug, and play unique music in each level instead of that same tune everywhere.. plus it makes it easier to change music with cheat codes if you want to hear the rest of the unused stuff.

(Doesn't fix the boss bug though, so you'll still have to use cheats to access the latter half of the game)
