Those are some pretty awesome collections! (Especially Cheetah's famicom carts, a few really cool ones in there)
I have some pirated GBA and Color carts, but I didn't think they were worth mentioning. All the 'Mario Advance' titles, on cartridges that just say "GameADVANCE" / Transparent blue GBC carts that just say "GAME". All pirated carts of licensed games.
I have a few other weird things too -
"Funstation 3 Famiclone" from Volumerates. It sucks. Runs at PAL speed, glitchy, horrible music, not worth the pennies I paid for it. the cartridges are OK-ish, but the console really blows, not to mention the controllers are tiny with cords about 2 feet long. I'd grade it a
D just because I like owning a shitty Dendy-like famiclone.
"Hyperkin brand Top-Loading NES clone" - Advertised/pictured as Yobo brand by the ebay seller, but it's hyperkin brand. I'm sure the manufacturers are somehow linked, but I'm a little annoyed about that sicne Yobo stuff always seems a bit better. It works fine, won't run Castlevania 3, but works fine with all my other NES games and my pirate carts. The included controllers and AV cables are usable, but thankfully it takes real NES controllers which are 9000 times better. The audio is noticably muffled but acceptable. I'd give it a
C+.
"FC Mobile II" by Hyperkin, the handheld NES.
The screen is small, but very bright. It adds a dithering effect when you play games on the small screen since the resolution is being scrunched, but it looks fine and text is still easy to read. It includes 2 wiresless controllers (they look like SNES controllers) but they really suck, the buttons and D-Pad all sink in and are unresponsive. As for the buttons and D-pad on the unit itself, they're very tight and responsive and have a lot of resistance, which is a good thing. The AV output is the best I've ever seen from a famiclone, as well as the audio. It works with the honeybee, of course, and the battery life is great too (4 AA batteries), my only real gripe with this is that I got a faulty one which I had to send back to get one that actually worked right :nono: But overall I'd say it gets a
B. At least 2 player is possible even if the controllers suck.
"FC 16 GO" by Yobo Gameware, the handheld SNES.
This one looks like an overgrown DS, which is awesome. The flipscreen is large enough, durable (survived a high speed fall) and about as bright as the FC Mobile II's. The AV out looks exactly like the SNES, maybe *slightly* brighter but I honestly can't tell the difference. The Audio is spot on, again I can't tell any difference from a real SNES console. The D-Pad on the unit itself is pretty good, I can use it in fighting games now that it's worn in, but it took some using before the D pad stopped being too stiff. The face buttons are excellent. The L and R buttons are pretty sucky, but they've yet to break on me after 3 years of regular use. The 2 Wireless SNES controllers are awesome, very responsive and firm. The D-Pad is awesome in terms of gameplay, but digs into your thumb more than the real SNES controllers do, noticable in fighting games. Once again the face buttons are perfect, as are the L and R buttons. (all these wireless controllers take 2 Triple A's, by the way) This thing won't run Mario RPG or Dragonball Z: Hyper Dimension, and it doesn't work properly with the Game Genie, but it runs DooM, Starfox, Wolf3D and Megaman X2, so it is acceptable in terms of compatability. The fact that it has a built in rechargable battery is a big bonus. Overall it gets an
A- just because I wanted Mario RPG, and less thumb blisters
"RetroPORT" by TTX Tech/RetroBit. A black cartridge that allows NES games to be played through a SNES. It's a famiclone on a chip, in an SNES cartridge in other words. It requires its own AV out, the SNES just acts as a power source and controller input. A and B are mapped to A and B, which makes sense and works well enough. The signal out is noticabley darker than a real NES. The sound is also audibly muffled. Once again, Castlevania 3 is glitched beyond recognition. Plays all my other NES and Pirate carts just fine, with occasional audio glitches, but nothing too bad. Also it works with a SuperAdvantage plugged in as a controller, and works through the FC 16 GO. I'd give it a
B-.
"RetroGEN" by TTX and RetroBit which is essentially the same thing, but instead of NES, you can now play Genesis or Megadrive games through your SNES. Once again, it has it's own AV output since its just a Genesis on a chip. It has a switch on the side with 4 region selections - NTSC, Pal EU, NTSC JP, and Pal A. From what I can tell, Pal A is never used. Genesis games work fine on NTSC, but most PAL games actually only start when it is still set to NTSC as well. Certain Megadrive games need to be set to "Pal EU" to start, the side effect being that the music plays faster than it's supposed to. Every cartridge I've tested, the music is always in key and the sound effects are perfect, a rare treat among Genesis clones, even if the music will sometimes be sped up in Megadrive games. I've yet to find a game it won't work with, it plays Castlevania: Bloodlines, Sonic & Knuckles, Aladdin and Marble Madness all fine, just to name a few popular titles. Sometimes, when there are a lot of bright colors on screen, the image distorts at the top of the screen, or the image shifts downward about an inch. This isn't too severe or my TV (a CRT) but it's noticable and weird, but it doesn't happen often. Overall, since the SNES controller is far superior to the Genesis controller, I use this more than my Genesis now. Naturally, it also works with the SuperAdvantage, and works through the FC 16 GO. It's a very awesome little adapter. It gets an
A-, just because of the region and music wackyness.
I've collected a enourmous heap of video game stuff over the years. I know you guys also have some weird Famiclones, I'm always interested in finding more stuff. I definitely need to stop being lazy and take pictures of all my various stuff :pandahappy:
