Emulator Consoles
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:24:36 AM »
I'm interested in getting a dedicated emulator console, but don't know which to get. They each have their pros and cons. I have seen video reviews for most of them, but no discussion of comparisons. For portable I was thinking of getting the GBA SP Chinese knock-off.

Here are some of the consoles that I am interested in

GAMEBOX Multi-Game Platform TV Video Game Console with Dual-Shock Joypad Gamepad Set (PAL/NTSC)
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/gamebox-multi-game-platform-tv-video-game-console-with-dual-shock-joypad-gamepad-set-pal-ntsc-54070
Supports MAME, CPS3, CPS2, CPS1, PGM, SFC, MD, PCECD. Although not perfectly according to reviews. Also, no US plug. Would there be a cheap alternative plug for Americans?

ND-3000 Game Station Console Set with USB/SD/HDMI/AV-Out (2GB)
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/nd-3000-game-station-console-set-with-usb-sd-hdmi-av-out-2gb-65977
Supports CPS1/CPS2/NeoGeo/GBA series games, but I heard emulation is bad in most games, but has HDMI output.

P1-4000 Game Station Console Set w/ SD/USB/HDMI/AV-Out (4GB
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/p1-4000-game-station-console-set-w-sd-usb-hdmi-av-out-4gb-81661
Supports PS1 series games, Flash games, PC version flash 4.0~8.0, flash lite 1.0~3.0, AS1.0~2.0. Well, this one seems to be more advanced, yet lacks some of the other systems. Expandable to 32GB, and also has HDMI.

Anyone have experience with these? What do you think is the best system for emulation? Maybe I'll just stick with my Wii for emulators, and the real carts when possible.

The latter two (and maybe the first as well) are by Shenzhen Nanjing, read into that what you will. You might be better off with something Android based if such a thing exists.

I've seen another one floating around called the Get-Arcade (something) but I dunno if it's any good, or where you can buy it from. I have their handheld and I'm not overly impressed with it.

If you're looking beyond an interesting conversation piece or collector's item, really the only practical options are a modded PSP and Xbox. A PSP will play everything better than any of the current clones, including standalone hardware clones like some of the portable Mega Drive and Famicom knockoffs, and the emulation is loads better than the Dingoo and it's ilk. Same for the Xbox. I haven't played any Wii emulators to compare them to the Xbox, but I'd assume they'd run as good or better than an Xbox.

All the GBA and PS1 knockoffs are emulators and not actual hardware clones, so you get to deal with all the incompatibilities that go along with that. I was thinking of buying one of those PS1 clones for the convenience of running images from the hard drive until I read that the emulation is so crappy it struggles with a lot of 3D games.

Fair point about the PSP - an Android based handheld console like the JXD S601 might also be a decent bet, since it'll always have good community support. IMO the Xbox is a pretty big/ugly/noisy thing to have set up all the time just to play emulators on though.

The Dingoo A320 can emulate NES, SNES, GBA, NeoGeo, CPS1/CPS2, MegaDrive/Genesis and it's compatible with several Dingux-based emulators.

Dingoo? The one I had died when I misinterpreted the instructions to install Dingux, which is one of the main reasons I bought a PSP 1000 this month.

yeah the Dingoo A320 is probably the best of the Chinese consoles, even though its not very powerful - it was in the right place at the right time and it got a lot of community support.

If you can get your hands on a GP2X Wiz, that's probably THE best option there is.

I would buy a GP2X Wiz for Streets of Rage Remake, but apparently that version hasn't been hosted at anywhere but the dead MegaUpload.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the PS1 emulation on PSP is pretty much flawless, which you're not going to find on any other portable. The only thing you won't be able to run on a PSP that isn't pretty much 100% is SNES (which varies from game to game) and MAME (also varies).

Some games like Killer Instinct (in most stages, one notable exception is Sabrewulf's) and the Puyo Puyo games on SNES don't run at 100% speed during gameplay, assuming the emulator is set at the default clock speed. This probably applies to both the Dingoo and the PSP. When I play the SNES version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, the tempo of Blanka's stage music is slower yet the game seems to run faster than that.

I have a Dingoo A320, which is good. I use the Dingoo Emulation Pack. (I don't use Dingux, I use Native OS). I also have a PSP, but no NES games that I put on NESterJ work. (Gray screen).

Otherwise, it works great! What's wrong with the NES games?

You have to make sure the games are supported by the emulator. It's best to have a few NROM games on it as well just to make sure the emulator itself works properly.
