The other Digimon Ruby
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:01:22 PM »
Surprised Qiezei hadn't posted anything here about his latest acquisition:

http://qiezei.blogspot.com/2011/12/collection-update-08-12042011-digimon.html

It's Digimon 3 Crystal. In Engrish. Released by New Game Color Advance under the title "Digimon Ruby". Not to be confused, of course, with Vast Fame's other Digimon Ruby RPG.

Even more interestingly, this was released by the New Game Color Advance brand-- a label which, as discussed here in the past, has released titles from Vast Fame and Sintax. And the logo design on the cartridge is exactly the same style as on Digimon Sapphire (GBC), a VFame strategy RPG... but also Digimon Amethyst and Yellow Jade, which are Sintax platformers!

Curiouser and curiouser, as both Alice and VFame's localization team would say. :)

Edit: Also, I'm pretty confident that, although New Game Color Advance may have distributed this cart, the localization is 100% Vast Fame. Note that the screenshot of the 'character select' screen has an entirely different layout... with PC Paint fonts, no less.

I don't really post any of my things here because what I post on my blog/channel usually covers everything I want to talk about...But anyway, that character select is there in the game, I just didn't mention it.  The only thing that isn't correct in the screenshots is that your character doesn't appear on the map; it's the same as all the other versions of the game.  I'm going to do a video on the game, but as I mentioned on the blog it'll mostly be of the inane dialogue.

And I totally forgot that Amethyst and Yellow Jade had the same cover style.  Hurrah for faulty memory.

Honestly, I'm excited to see just how ridiculous the translation is. VFame's Engrish never fails to disappoint.

Oh, incidentally, on a vaguely related topic: the dialogue font used in all of VFame's GBC RPG translations is from Konami's "Survival Kids".

No idea why they did that when they had a perfectly ROM-friendly font sitting right there in PC Paint... bootleg developers are weird. :)

Stupid cart's not working properly for me, as it keeps freezing less than five seconds into the game.  I think it just needs to be cleaned, though I know that Pokemon Ruby occasionally freezes as well, probably because of how the cart for it and Digimon Ruby don't go all the way in, causing contact issues?     Weird thing is that it gives me that issue on my GB Player, but not quite as much on my Game Boy, and my other games work fine on my player...If it's the contact issue, maybe I can get better results by switching out the innards with another cart, but I'll clean it first.  This seems rather trivial, but it's just something I've noticed with this and Pokemon Ruby.

'fraid I've got some bad news, boys.  I still can't get the game to work properly for me.  I'm starting to think that it's an emulation issue, rather than what I originally thought.  The game lasts for all of three seconds before totally freezing on me in GB Player; I'm lucky if I get to part of the intro.  For the sake of comparison, I've tried it on my other systems as well.  On a mono GB, the game freezes and just shows a single horizontal line on the screen (like what shows when you turn the system off, though this stays on screen) right after bootup.  There's the occasional freezing/glitched resetting on a GBC and GBA, though it's random when it happens (if at all).

On top of that, there's also this:

The board for each game is shown below their respective cases.  Something I came across trying to switch the guts out is how the board is laid out.  For this and Pokemon Ruby, the batery is placed down in the bottom-right corner rather than the top.  Dunno why that is.  I also checked Digimon Saphire and Yellow Jade, but Saphire has the battery in its normal place, while Yellow Jade has no battery whatsoever.  If they all were made by New Game, then it looks like they changed their manufacturing method when they started producing black carts.  What I'm getting at is when I tried to switch the boards, it doesn't fit properly due to the bizzare layout, and I've tried it on a good number of cases.  I can provide images of their boards as well if this means anything, because I sure as hell don't know.  Still, rather odd considering that every other game I know off doesn't have the different layout.

So since footage seems out the window (at least for the moment), I jotted down the intro cutscene's text for some "lulz".  Everything is laid out just like in the game, spelling and all.  Blue is the human player's text, while Red is their partner Digimon's text.

Taizou i know but i mean the translation is very similar to Digimon Amethyst for the gbc.
Star-Spangled Shazam I have a feeling that gowin published the cartiridge since it keeps freezing and won't work on your gb player. Or it is the other way around and the game got burned on to a board similar to one of their original cartiridges instead.
