Famicom bootleg competition!
« on: July 12, 2016, 09:19:03 PM »
Hope I posted this in the right place... :\

Hey,

So I've seen some video game competitions where every month or so there's a new task that you have to do in the game. Then you do the task and email your entry to an email set up by whoever's managing the competition. And you get points or whatever depending on how well you did the task, and whoever has the most points in the end of all the tasks is the winner. (for example there have been Super Mario 64 TAS competitions like this).

I'm thinking about having a Famicom bootleg competition like this, depending on how many people are interested.

If enough people want to do it, there still will need to be discussion about the details. (is it TAS or no TAS? will it be a different bootleg each time or the same one? etc.)

So.... what do you guys think?  :)  If there is enough interest and the details are sorted out I will set it up.

Not a bad idea, I'm in it. :) Of no great importance I think the TAS, smooth competition also would be good.

I was going to add in a poll for TAS vs. non-TAS but the option for adding a poll isn't showing up. :(

Maybe the competition could have two categories, TAS and non-TAS? All the tasks would be the same.

And piratenesgames, I don't understand what you said regarding TAS.  :\  Do you mean the TASing is of no great importance, or that it's no great importance whether it's TAS or not, or did you mean something else?

Sorry, I used Google Translate, my english is very poorly.

Alright! I've decided to make the competition. Hopefully some more people decide to join.  :)

I've decided to basically steal most of the rules from the Super Mario 64 TAS Competitions because I'm too lazy to make up rules on my own. :P

So here are the rules:

1. THE TASKS
Every month, there will be a new task for you to do in a Famicom bootleg. There are two categories for the competition, TAS and non-TAS. You can compete on both of them, or just one of them, or not compete, or pretty much whatever you want.

NON-TAS RULES:  The task can be done on an emulator or an actual console, and your entry will be a video of your recording. Videos can be big, so I'd prefer if you upload it to YouTube or some other video hosting place and make it unlisted so people can't see your strategies, and you send me the YouTube URL. Note to cheaters: I am not going to carefully analyze every entry to see if it's fake, but if it's obvious enough for me to notice, you are disqualified from that task and also you will be banned from the competition. Please don't cheat though because if you do you are being a jerk.  :nono:

TAS RULES: Your TAS has to be done on FCEUX. It's the only Famicom TAS emulator I know how to use, and thus the only one I will be able to judge the entries for in the competition. Your submission is the .fm2 or .fm3 file and (if applicable) the save state. Put those two files together and attach them to the email either uncompressed or in .zip format. (if you need to, you can use some other compression format, but .zip is preferred.)

2. SUBMITTING

You will have up to and not including the deadline day to submit your entry. The entry should be emailed to: FamicomBootlegCompetition@gmail.com. The time zone that I'm using is UTC−08:00, aka PST, aka Pacific Standard Time, so if you live in some other time zone keep that in mind.

You can only submit one entry. No do-overs. However, there can be exceptions like if you make a simple mistake like sending the wrong file or the TAS is desynced or something.

3. SCORING

I'm going to pretty much steal the scoring system from the Super Mario 64 TAS competitions. Here's how it works. After every task, you get points. The number of points you get depends on what place you get. Here is the point system:

1st place: 5 points.
2nd place: 4.5 points.
3rd place: 4 points.
...
7th place: 2 points.
8+ places: 1.5 points.

4. OTHER STUFF

•In the TAS version of the competition, no co-authoring with other people. As for the non-TAS part, I'm not sure how you would co-author with other people on it, but if you think of some way to do it, don't.
•No hacking. No game genie. No MHS. Basically no cheating.
•Don't talk about or show other people your complete or incomplete submissions until after the deadline for the task, even if the other people you're telling aren't competing. I mean, I can't really get you in trouble for this if I don't find out, but if I do you are in trouble so be careful about it.
•If you break the rules you can get disqualified.

So, that's basically it for the rules. If you have an idea for a task, send me a message and I will consider it. (I don't mean the email, I mean the built-in message system on the forum.)

And, with all that out of the way, here is the first task. I am sorry if the task isn't very good, and if you have a better idea for task 2 please let me know.

TASK 1

Game: Hummer Team's Super Mario World (incomplete version).

Task: Enter the first level (not the Yoshi house), get to the midpoint without collecting any Yoshi Coins, collect the midpoint, then turn around and collect the two Yoshi Coins that Mario passed.

Additional notes:
•Timing starts when the level begins, and ends when the two Yoshi Coins have been collected.
•I know they are technically supposed to be called Dinosaur Coins but who cares, Yoshi Coin sounds better.

Deadline: August 15th, 2016

Results: (in post below)

Compilation video (non-TAS): https://youtu.be/-BucRWGSDf8

Competitors' entries: Non-TAS ones are in the compilation video. My TAS one is here: https://youtu.be/RMoBGuBJaLE

I was hoping more people would be interested in this.  :(

I will still judge the results and stuff for the first task, but if only 1 person other than me will do it I probably won't do a task 2.

Does anyone have some ideas about how to make this competition better?
