Similar to my Desert Storm thread, this is centered on the 16 bit game, Commander.

Condensed verdict: one of the worst excuses of a video game and definitely one of the worst Contra games.

Detailed information:

The game has 1 music track; it's a 5-second sample of the first level tune from arcade Super Contra. It literally plays throughout the entire game, except for the first level's boss, which is a tank. The tank's motor acts as the music in that segment.

You play as Ray, from Contra Hard Corps. Your default gun is the ordinary pea shooter, but you can upgrade to Machine Gun (same strength and as regular gun, the most pointless powerup), Spread Gun (can be weaker than your default gun) and fireball (acts like NES Contra's Fireball but is the most powerful gun in the game; it's slow, however). There's also a plain powerup without any letter. I don't even know what this does, but I suspect it clears the screen of enemies. But even that I can't even confirm because you find this powerup fly by ALWAYS when there are no enemies around.

You also can't gain lives through points, but it gives infinite continues. After each game over, you start at the beginning of that current stage you were on. The hit detection is absolutely horrid in some areas. And it doesn't help your troubles that the controller's motion sensor is programmed poorly, so you'll often jump when you don't want to (usually into enemies). Even when not doing anything, the player will jump sometimes.

All fodder enemies and some boss enemies were taken from Contra. Most bosses come from other sources (IDK).

The worst part of this game? There are only 2 levels. That's right. But even though there are some minibosses, the actual bosses themselves take forever to destroy. Using the fireball gun alone can take about 5 minutes to kill one boss when intensely firing at it. I don't consider this any bit a consolation for the game's minute length, nor can it qualify as a challenge. It's just tedious.

Bottom line: perhaps you'd want to beat this game knowing that it has infinite continues and only 2 levels, partly making up for its shitty nature. I'm getting really suspicious that this is just a stupid ripped and shortened version of Super X Man. Why? Well, that game has a main menu, character select, more guns and definitely more music. With that in mind, it's safe to assume it probably has more levels.

it wouldnt surprise me if this is a shortened version of Super X Man, Waixing has pulled that trick before.. Super Fight I on famiclones is a shortened Super Contra 7/8, and their 2005 version of F22 only has something like three out of the 16 levels from the original Inventor version. although this is still one of the better games on the iSports IMO.. which doesn't say much for the rest of them.

[also i'm gonna move this topic to "other pirates", its not a famicom game]

I wonder who says "Super X Man" on the title screen.

Interestingly, the Super X Man voice is absent in the actual Super X Man.

maybe there was another version between the two, one thats otherwise identical to Commander but has the Super X Man title?

this iSports looks identical to mine but it has a different selection of games, including Super X Man:

so maybe thats actually the intermediate version..

the Commander title does look a bit like a last minute hack, it might have been changed at the request of some foreign distributor who thought "X Man" might cause some trouble with Marvel or something.

I guess the voice was just done by whichever random Waixing employee could kinda speak English.. unless they ripped it from somewhere else.

I'm always still curious about that title, Super Fight. Perhaps it's just a generic fighter. Well, one thing is certain is that I hope there are built-in cheats for Super X Man. If (when), I acquire that one, there will probably be more levels. That means more coping with shitty gameplay.

yeah, I can't remember where I saw it but its definitely a fighting game. the sprites looked quite decent, which probably means they were ripped from some Neo-Geo game.

Sorry for bumping this but I found a full playthrough of Super X-Man from Chinese 16-bit clones...
