Dumping NES/Famicom Carts?
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:41:31 PM »
I received a couple NES repros for Christmas: two copies of RetroUSB's NES Campus Challenge 1991: http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=&products_id=68. There's only one original copy in existence AFAIK, and they have it. Well I haven't owned an NES since the 80s! I plan on (hopefully) buying one soon, along with a flash cart.

Anyways, as many of you (most?) know, there isn't a (publicly) available ROM for this game. This was the #1 reason I chose this title as the first NES cart I've bought since the '80s. Now onto the issue:

I've never dumped a ROM, and I got this game partially for the purpose of getting this game into a ROM format. I know I could send it to a reputable scene dumper, but I'd prefer doing this myself. Atm, I'm leaning towards the Kazzo: http://www.infiniteneslives.com/kazzo.php. So far, based off the description, it's only fault is that it doesn't dump SNES ROMs.

Does anybody have any recommendations as to the best option for what I want to do?

I'm certainly not an expert in this matter, but still. This cartridge is pretty complicated. I think it will be hard to dump it and make it work properly on emulator. Maybe "dumper device" even would dump this cart that easy. I read that "dumper device" how to send proper signals to the mapper to switch memory banks correctly. So maybe you how to guess at your own how to make mapper switch memory banks properly to dump this cart. Maybe after all you how to write your own iNES mapper to make it work on emulator. I'm definitely recommend to send this cart to the specialist

Bad English
Not sure how much of that (if any) was laced with sarcasm. Anyways, I'm fairly tech savvy, but def not a specialist at dumping NES ROMs. Never tried before. I'm pretty persistent when I want to do something bad enough, given I have available help (documentation/instruction and somebody experienced to ask questions about whatever).

But, I was well aware that this was a complex cart, or else we'd have had the ROM for it long ago. RetroUSB and their copy protection schemes. I mean when I buy carts they're as collector's items. It's typically the case that when you buy a hack or homebrew cart, that the ROM is part of the deal. I've bought about 5-7 carts over the past few years and was always provided with a ROM.

Soo, all that being said, I'm thinking I'll go the specialist route for multiple reasons. I'm gonna email CaH4e3 about it. I'm just concerned about sending a hundred dollar cart off to B.F.E., and it floating around God knows where. I seem to recall that he travels a lot? Not sure how insurance works with overseas shipping too. But I guess it's what I'm gonna do. *shrug*

No sarcasm at all. Just Bad English. I'm trying aware that dumping NES cart no easy task. It's not like you buy dumper, put cart into dumper, connect dumper to pc and end up getting xxxx.nes file that will work on every emulator.

Word. That listing page for the Kazzo gave me the impression that it was basically like that. I was like $30? Hell yeah! I'd have to spend xxx amount of time before learning how to do something like that properly. I already emailed CaH4e3.

I don't own this yet (been wanting to get one), but you can get a ROM dumper for fairly cheap from here: http://www.infiniteneslives.com/kazzo.php

I have some FC multicarts that don't appear to be dumped yet, so I'd like to try this too.

Whoops! Completely missed the part where you already mentioned this!
RetroUSB doesn't have the only copy of NCC in existence, just the only 1 that is publicly known. At least 2 others are in private collector hands and you can bet there's next to no chance of them surfacing (save perhaps a 5-6 figure offer).

Dumping the RetroUSB version's ROM is your choice, but it isn't the true original game ROM because they modified it to some degree. On top of that, by definition their version is a bootleg. So if/when you dump it and you might release it, add a suffix to the rom file name; ex, in brackets can write (RetroUSB) or (repro).
