Aladdin 2 GBA HK Original?
« on: November 06, 2014, 08:28:44 PM »
Was at a local pawn shop, and saw a pretty obvious bootleg Aladdin game for GBA. Was able to talk it down from the $10 they were asking for it luckily. I fully expected it to just be one of the famicom Aladdin bootlegs running off pocketnes, but to my suprise, it turned out to be an original game!

You'll have to excuse the bad shots, as I only own a frontlit GBA SP.

Does anyone know if this is a hack of an existing HK original, or an original itself? I'll try to upload a video of the game in action whenever I can find a steady way to record off screen. (I haven't uploaded a pirate game oddities video in like 7 years. Guess you could call that a comeback?)

I have no idea what this is. As far as I can tell, it's either a pirate original or a hack of another game I've never heard of.

Isn't that the same engine used by several other GBA platformers? Digimon Adventure off the top of my head, as well as I think a Mario or Donkey Kong game? I mention that because the HUD looks exactly the same.

yeah it's by Sintax, literally every single one of their GBA games uses this same engine.. there are at least 10 of them, probably more.

Looking at footage of Digimon Adventure, it appears to be the same game with different sprites. It really explains the giant hit boxes on small enemies. The music is the same as well. The only other difference I can see is that the apples have smaller hitboxes than agumon's fireballs, making it impossible to hit some ground enemies.

I don't have a way of dumping the ROM unfortunately. Even so, it's a slightly broken hack of Digimon Adventure, so I doubt there's too much interest in dumping it.

Scratch that, I do remember that you can dump a GBA Game using a DS with a flashcart. I'll look into doing that. I imagine the game has copy protection, so getting a good dump may not be possible.

yeah, these GBA games are often pretty hard to dump.. I have one (Lord of the Rings IV) and not only have I been unable to dump it with a DS, it won't even play on a DS. It's worth a try anyway.

For CuppaKofe's sake (because this stuff is fascinatingly train-wreckish), here are some of the older threads about this series of bootlegs, including links to video footage from even more of them:

i cant wait until one of these games gets dumped, because i love the music in all of them.  all two tracks- those tracks that they took from their other games and added drums to.
