Famicom/NES / Dongda & Batong keyboard clones
« on: January 09, 2020, 05:11:06 PM »
Today it just struck me that the Batong BT-986 II has the same termination number as the Pyramid PEC-586 from Dongda Electronics. Digging further reminded me that that there exists a Batong BT-686 which has not been confirmed so far to be Famicom compatible. The final word is that it actually is, the Famicom slot is hidden in the right slot, at the very front of this space so it's usually not visible in photos. This region also houses two small cartridges. The first attached photo shows the compartment housing the included software cartridges. These are strikingly similar to the ones found in the Dong Da Pyramid PEC-9388 (Sonic REC-9388 in Russia). The second attachement presents two Chinese PEC-9388 cartridges. The shape matches for the most part but the cover area seems smaller, it may or may not have been moulded using a different die. But the ID matches and the asymmetrical design is quite unique on its own to suggest there may have been something going on with these two companies.

This video shows two Batong-Sunsonic consoles. The first, whose exact model cannot be identified, has the two extra slots and a floppy disk drive. The second, identical to the first on a first glance, lacks the drive and the extra slots. The plastic shell used is the same so they covered it with some soft plastic bearing the brand and model number - Sunsonic 686.

I couldn't find many others *86 consoles but the JT-486 exists as well (the Chinese PEC-586 is also shown in this tweet).

(Chinese names of both companies: Batong - 八通, Dongda - 深圳东达电器有限公司研制)

The Sunsonic PEC-686 photo is courtesy of prince tomato, the PEC-9388 cartridges photo is from MO5.com. The last one shows the internal software.

BootlegGames Wiki / Standardizing the data layout for the infobox
« on: December 29, 2019, 04:30:17 PM »
While writing some pages for Sachen games (and especially dealing with a few old, never updated pages) I stumbled upon various way of presenting the same data. I would like to standardize it slightly but I require some inputs as some choice aren't as obvious and should be discussed.

Adding the original name in the infobox header
That's something I've been doing for a while, mostly for games that have the title in non-latin alphabets. Since we wants the top line of the infobox to match the page name, I just add
Code: [Select]
<br/>*Original name using the original script*Example.
Now, I'm not sure if this is something that should be done for games that have a title screen solely in latin, such as Colorful Dragon.
The plus on adding it: completness, actually represents how it is called in the country of origin.
The downside: a proper title

The mousetext
I'm a bit conflicted about this. At first I thought it was nice but it there are a few notable flaws. The first is that it does not work on mobile phones, it's no big deal since it's usually just to show the romanization and I don't see it really missing with anyone, since nobody copy the romanizations from the mobile version (right!?).
The second issue I have is that there's no clean way of indicating the associated language, hence so in some rare case it may be confusing. Take for example with Mahjong Trap where both the Japanese and Chinese name use Kanjis yet they should be translated differently. The article makes it clear here (but in a rather lousy way). Some pages such as this one use the mousetext functionality and add the romanization used. I find it slightly confusing on my end but it can hide rather long and unecessary parenthesis in the first paragraph too.
The question stands also for games that use foreign script to phonetically (closely) match to the english name. Such as Hacker International (Hakkāintānashonaru), Black Dragon (블랙 드래곤 - Beullaeg deulaegon). For uniformity I want to say yes but in another way, is the romanization appropriate?

Misc
  • For games that were cancelled by a publisher and ended up released by another, I generally add the original intended publisher in <small> below the actual one. Example. Some people may find it confusing however and this fact could stay in the trivia rather than the infobox.
  • Adding <br/> to the alternate names list when they don't fit in the same line. Example

Unrelated
The Sachen page needs a serious clean-up. It should be updated to use tables for the games lists and also I would consider separating Joy Van from the Sachen page for clarity. And maybe even considering making a page for Thin Chen Enterprises? If we have proper things to say on each entities. I'm not too sure on the later but I definitely think we could have distinct Joy Van and Sachen pages, at the very least. I don't mind doing some of the layout but I'm definitely no Sachen expert so I can't do much regarding the games description & related commentaries.

Bootleg Bazaar / Super Mario World (Famicom)
« on: November 07, 2019, 06:39:39 AM »
I'm selling a copy of Super Mario World for $65. The cartridge is in fair condition, cover has a part that was ripped off in a straight line on one edge but it's not impacting the whole art. Nonetheless the cartridge works perfectly fine.

Shipping can vary from $9 to $24 depending your location and the desired option. Payment via paypal only.

1984-1992 / CCE Catalog
« on: February 23, 2018, 07:55:23 AM »
I'm rehosting a scan that has been made widely available in Brazilian communities of the CCE catalog. It's basically an advertisement for their titles with their own covers. I don't know if all the cartridges shown were released. It's definitely missing some like Bookyman, Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros, which likely came later.

1993-1999 / New Star Electronics manual
« on: November 01, 2016, 05:34:21 PM »
I saw what seemed to be a catalog from New Star Electronics (mostly known for their NSxx multicarts), bought it but it ended up being a compilation of manuals for the games they released (standalone, if they did, and their multicarts).

You can download the whole thing there (scanned)

Pirate Talk / Lost in bygone gaming
« on: September 10, 2016, 09:50:58 AM »
So hum, there is a bunch of stuff I've been thinking of documenting but it wouldn't fit BGW because it was either too long or REALLY not interesting (who wants to read 2 paragraphs talking about pcb or whatever?). It will be mostly stuff that nobody will ever write down or bother to find.

I decided to start a blog named "lost in bygone gaming" with a first article explaining the JY-NT relationship in 1996.
http://masterdisk.byethost15.com/blog/libg/

I'll mostly use it to reference some stuff I write on BGW or undocumented finds.

BootlegGames Wiki / Credits
« on: August 30, 2016, 07:00:48 PM »
I started to add a staff/credits paragraph on some articles. I feel it has been missing from the wiki (and I'm certain many other people will agree). If you see a game page that you know has credits, do not hesitate to add them.

here are some examples:
http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Sheng_Huo_Lie_Zhuan#Credits (Chinese credits with translation)
http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Zhan_Guo_Si_Chuan_Sheng#Staff (I decided to capitalize their last name. Good or bad idea? especially when it's available, unlike quite a few games…)

I also replaced/rewritten some unclear position because of bad wording.

Here is an example with Decathlon (C&E):
Original:
Code:

PRODUCER: MR.KUO
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: JACK
ORIGINATE WITH: BIRD
CHARACTER DESIGN: TASMIN
GRAPHIC DESIGN: SCORPIO
VISION DIRECTOR: UIP
MAIN PROGRAMMER: DANNY
SUB PROGRAMMER: ANDY
DIALOG TRANSLATION: DARU
DATA INFORMATION: C.T.T.F.A.
COPYWRITER,MUSIC & DIRECTOR: KOSSEL
SPECIAL THANKS TO: REABBECA
PRESENTED BY C&E

My attempt:
Code:

Producer: Mr.Kuo
Executive Producer: Jack
Concept by: Bird
Decathlon-gameplay
High Jump Gameplay
Character designer: Tasmin
Graphics by: Scorpio
Art Director: UIP
Main programmer: Danny
Programmer: Andy
Text: Daru
Data Information (?): C.T.T.F.A.
Composer and Director: Kossel
Special Thanks: Reabbeca

http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Decathlon

I'm still unsure about where to put in the article, right before trivia feels OK except for very long credits such as Decathlon (for example).
Suggestions welcome.

1993-1999 / King of Fighters 96 music
« on: April 09, 2016, 02:52:51 PM »
So huh, I've noticed that at least one of the King of Fighters 96's tune is based on some older song; New York's not my home by Jim Croce.

Hacker Center / Final Fantasy X2 fixed ROM
« on: November 05, 2013, 03:10:55 PM »
The dumped ROM of Final Fantasy X2 seems to glitch near the end. The player has to walk down a cave where he gets trapped. The next section has another glitch which makes the bridges not function properly. To beat that ROM you have to use a walk through walls code (which makes the end pointless)
SMWHacker looked up the problem and fixed it. The camera may glitch it a bit near the end but it's working.

Mega Drive/Genesis / Ex-Sachen devs related to Lion King II?
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:53:42 AM »
http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/The_Lion_King_II

The font used for "Push Start Button" is the same as the one in China Rabbit Baby for "Push Start" ("Push" again !), The Dragon (both by EHY team). It was also seen in some Makon game.
All these developers being linked to Sachen (and likely the guy which ran makon was part of that team). I think it's used in some other games but I forgot which.

So this game *could* have been developed by them or at least some.

Pirate Talk / Picture request thread
« on: April 03, 2013, 05:37:25 PM »
You want a picture of a certain cartridge, box, manual or just gameplay of an undumped unlicenced game? You've come to the right place!

How it works:
To request something, you just need to post here and say what you want. The more details you write of what you need, the easier it'll be for the person who take the picture.

When you answer a request, please quote the message. Make sure you use a good hoster for the picture(s) you upload. It's much better if they stay online a long time.

Rules:
-If the pic contains graphical content, you must put the link between spoiler (just the link, do not use img tags).
-Please look for what you need on BootlegGamesWiki, PiratedGameMuseum or Google before making a request here.
-The person who answers the request can use watermarks if he thinks its necessary.
-If it's a picture you backed up from somewhere else. It may be useful to tell where you got it (if you remember).
