2000-present / Odd Variation of one of those Powerjoy Famiclones
« on: December 04, 2010, 10:02:28 PM »
Recently, I found this video of one of the many Powerjoy Famiclones. Strange thing is that while most of the games on there appear to be the standard QSL buggery, Panda Adventure is included on there which is most definitely not by them. I'm also curious about that Space Shuttle game, the enemy patterns vaguely remind me of Recca but other than that I don't have a clue where it's from. As far as I can tell from the extremely quiet game audio, I think the sound engine is either taken from Sunsoft or Hummer Team. I've also never heard of Barroom Shootout, looks almost like an NTDEC game as far as I can tell on the title screen. I doubt it is though, given the Powerjoy copyright and font.

2000-present / DreamGEAR 75-in-1
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:23:21 PM »
I'm sure some of you (or codeman38 at least) have seen the DreamGEAR 75-in-1, and CaH4e3 recently dumped a rom of it. Being able to see this stuff in clearer quality (or the games that work, rather) I noticed that the collectable items in Super Hero (the hack of Dragon Co's Felix the Cat) are red versions of the Internet Explorer logo. Presumably, it's actually a rehack of The Hacker, although I'm not sure why they'd pick that instead. I'd beat the game, but quite frankly I've had enough of that awful game and I can't get the supposed cheat to work well. (as in, you constantly jump to the left or something) Haven't looked at the other games yet.

Mega Drive/Genesis / Never Ending Soft Team = DVS Electronic Co?
« on: October 28, 2010, 04:07:26 PM »
Up until now I hadn't really looked into the more obscure Mega Drive pirates, mostly the ones with Chinese names. I recently found this (and credits to Taizou for the video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=480UnEPhxIA and I noticed that the music in this game is reused in other pirates. The boss theme is remixed for that Mortal Kombat Mythologies game on the Mega Drive and the ending theme is reused for the 3rd level of that game, the second level of Pocket Monster and KoF99. From searching around, I've found that the first level theme is reused in KoF99 as well and the theme for the second level is reused in Mulan and MK5 so I think we can assume that all of the pirates that use the same sound engine (High Seas Havoc's engine, if I recall) are by Never Ending Soft Team. I'm sure there's some other tunes I missed but I think that's proof enough.
Thing is though, if all of those games are by them then who are DVS Electronic Co., the people who apparently did the Super Famicom port of Pocket Monster? Are they another company that Never Ending told them to do ports for, or were they just an alias? Kind of confusing seeing as the music in some of the games is completely different. (and in the case of Pocket Monster, stolen from Bonkers on the SNES) Not to mention, the engines seem to be recoded from scratch as opposed to being a regular port.

2000-present / Earlier versions of Trump Grand games?
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:47:30 PM »
I recently came across a couple of videos showing off a(n awful) Famiclone which had 10 games on it. The Play Power Video Game Pad by TechnoSource, whoever they are. They have no music whatsoever, few sound effects, the title screens are really basic and overall it's pretty bad. I noticed at least a few of these games look like modified versions of Trump Grand games. Raceway and Snowboarding look like Corridor, Boxing looks like an earlier version of Boxing Wrestle, Hungry Worm looks like yet another hack of Gamtec's Fire Dragon, Paddle Fun is evidently a less annoying version of Trump Grand's Pong clone (I forget the name of it), Balloon Pop is pretty much Shooting Ballo(o)ns and Drop Em is that Hitting Mices (sic) game. Here's the videos:

Pirate Talk / Pirated gear I found on Argos
« on: October 21, 2010, 03:28:59 PM »
Fairly recently (by which I mean when I saw this review of the N-Joypad) Argos, a retailer based in the UK, distribute some pirated stuffs (sic) in their stores. Incicentally, that's where I got that Cyber Arcade Centre thing (or CAC if you prefer because that's what is  ) from, which like I mentioned before (including a couple of updates to my last post which you might not have read) had a few ripped off games as well as the Pitfall II theme. I'll just put up a list of this stuff I found on their website and eBay account.

Zone 40 Wireless Gaming Console - The Zone 40 is quite obviously a 16-bit console that blatantly rips off the Wii with its motion control and general design. In the video I've linked to, you'll notice that some of the games are rip offs of 8-bit games, namely The Mouse & The Cat which is an obvious ripoff of Pac-Man, Bomberman which is a clone of... you know, and Bee Fighting which is an obvious clone of Galaga. Some of the games are also ports of 8-bit Trump Grand games, such as Hitting Mice and Baseball. Also, it's worth pointing out that Daniel in the Bowling game is actually Wallace Breen from Half Life 2.

Sega Megadrive LCD portable thing - TBH, I'm not sure if this is pirated or not seeing as Sega like whoring their stuff out these days (in fact, I think there's even another version of the Zone 40 with Sega's branding) but I'll point it out here anyways. One of those handheld Mega Drives (or Geneses (sic?) if you're American) you can find in numerous places nowadays. Several of these things are present on Argos' website, including one on sale for £13. (which is about $20, I think)

From eBay,

64-in-1 Plug & Play TV Game - This one I'm intrigued about, mainly because Argos really don't give the game away with their description. As I found out on AliBaba, this thing merely contains the same old Trump Grand games we've all grown to detest. Incidentally, that one is distributed by Tai Kee Industry Co. LTD., and looking at their account they seem to distribute (and possibly make) more of these clones. Should probably make a seperate topic about them, but I'm too lazy to.
Argos' bad attempt to look cool

2000-present / Cyber Arcade Center 120-in-1
« on: October 13, 2010, 01:52:42 PM »
I recently found out that Argos, a retailer in this country, happen to distribute numerous Famiclones and such. Earlier today I bought this Famiclone from them released by Lexibook, I have no idea who they are TBH. I have yet to open the box, mainly because it's in one of those clamshell packages which are impossible to open without scissors, but the screenshots on the box art are clearly from JungleTac games/hacks. The featured game on it (by which I mean the one on the screen) is quite clearly a hack of Magic Jewelry by Hwang Shinwei which I've seen on other Famiclones. Looking at the other screenshots, one of them kind of looks like Rad Racer, one is almost definitely a Bust-a-Move clone, one of them involves you catching eggs, (I'm pretty sure codeman38 said what game the background is ripped from on a video of it but I forgot what the game was) one of them appears to have graphics ripped from (I think) Adventure Island II, one of them is Aero Engine from the Gamespower 50 that Ashens reviewed and another is definitely a clone of Bejeweled. Oh, and one of the games on the back looks like a ripoff of Rodland starring a ripoff of Kirby or something, and the background reminds me of Mighty Bomb Jack's title screen. I'll upload some photos of the box in a bit, although don't expect good quality from a mobile phone. :P
BTW, here's Lexibook's website, if you really want it.

Also, for some crazy reason despite the box clearly saying 120-in-1, Argos labels it as a 100-in-1.

Pirate Talk / A new Youtube channel for pirate gaming vids
« on: October 10, 2010, 01:42:15 PM »
Not sure if I should post it here, but I made a new channel for my pirate gaming vids. Whether I should do commentary on these vids or not, I've yet to decide on. Was gonna name it PirateGamingVids, but I didn't want it to sound official. :P Anyway, here's the link.

2000-present / V-Mega Famiclone
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:20:40 PM »
I recently found the V-Mega, an educational Famiclone made by "Yese" in 2005. One thing that I find strange about this is that one of the songs in the menus is taken from Go! Benny! by NTDEC and modified. (you can hear it clearly about 7 minutes in) And considering all of the stuff lifted from early Famicom titles (as well as Bubble Bobble and Kirby's Adventure) and that NTDEC released those titles (hence the lawsuit against them) they might be connected with this thing. Either that or Yese felt like nicking the music for the sake of it. Also, the graphics on this thing look too advanced for 8-bit if you ask me. (technically, at least) Also, Pop Monster looks somewhat like "Robot" off those Waixing Famiclones to me.

One thing I just realised is that Street Fighter IV rips graphics directly from the ROM of Shatterhand, seeing as there's a Natsume copyright in there. However, Kart Fighter, which takes graphics from Little Nemo: The Dream Master, appears to use screenshots from the game instead, as shown by this page. No idea what's up with that, especially seeing as Kart Fighter came out after SFIV.

Game Boy / Yong Yong
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:50:50 PM »
I was just looking through the roms of numerous Yong Yong games and I noticed the coding before the game name is almost identical between them. As well as this, Thunder Blast Man's is the same. Would that suggest that Yong Yong coded Thunder Blast Man or stole the engine from it? Not only this, but the rom of Rockman 8 calls it Rockman 99 in the rom, Sonic 3D Blast 5 is called Sonic 5 and Thunder Blast Man is called Thunder Blaster HY.

2000-present / Abab Soft
« on: August 05, 2010, 07:36:16 PM »
I recently found a 4-in-1 multicart which when booted up brings up a screen with a logo and a website for Abab Soft. Using the Wayback Machine, I found that they seemed to have been active from 2003 to 2005, here's a link to what their website was like.
http://web.archive.org/web/20050205212309/http://ababsoft.com/index.html
There are several oddities I spotted from the screenshots. Firstly, the map in the Ping Pong game appears to have been based off the one from Master Fighter VI and Street Fighter III, especially seeing as it states that Spain is where the UK is. Apparently, there are pirated games based off Lord of the Rings and Titanic. (or Titenic if you prefer :P ) Possibly hacks, but whatever. I also noticed several Hummer Team/possibly Someri Team games: Shisen Mahjong 2, (on the multicart with the Japanese/Chinese text) Harry's Legend and Mortal Kombat 4. I wouldn't mind, but on the 4-in-1 multicart I found the rom of, (the one with Panda Adventure) the music sounds suspiciously like something Hummer Team would've made. I might link to the rom if I need to.
