Game Boy / Unused drums and strange song found inside Digimon Advenure
« on: November 16, 2015, 10:22:25 PM »
I was bored recently, so I decided I'd use Audacity and use it's "Import Raw Data" feature to look inside GBA ROMS to listen to their samples...again. Then I decided, why not try Digimon Adventure? That game has some sampled drums in it...so I opened it. And I found much more than I expected. Not only did I find many more drum samples than are used in-game, but after it, there was a fully-streamed song.
This especially is interesting, seeing as I don't know why it's there...maybe they intended to use it as a level theme? The theme sounds as if it's a dance-style song. The song lasts dor about 30 seconds, and ends with a fade-out effect. What's even weirder is the fact is that the song isn't in there once, but TWICE. One after another.

Here is a dump of all the sample data in one WAV file:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_zYoz3nVdW_OXBEdjdwZkFuaGs/view?usp=sharing

As well as the individual song itself, complete with its duplicate.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_zYoz3nVdW_Z21XZmdtU1ozdTA/view?usp=sharing

I don't know what sample rate is actually used, but 11025hz sounds about right.
Does anyone know where this song is originally from, and what it might have been intended to use for? The song, as well as all the unused drum samples, are also probably in all the undumped hacked versions, seeing how the music and sound effects are identical.

Pirated Work / Wave to Game Boy
« on: June 02, 2015, 07:21:10 PM »
Hello,
I would like to download and use Megaman X's wave to GB converter for use in a pirated-style game (http://www.yvan256.net/projects/gameboy/GBWAV10.ZIP#gbwave), but whenever I click on the link, it redirects me to the homepage. Does anyone else know another place with that zip, or can anyone else who has it upload it somewhere else? Sorry this is not a good place for this post, but I don't know where else to ask. If anyone else has an idea of where I should ask, please tell me.

Game Boy / Games that need redumping from original cartiridges
« on: May 23, 2015, 08:07:48 PM »
Most of these games are HACKS, not bad dumps, so why do they need to be redumped if they're good dumps of hacked version of the games?

Donkey Kong 5 isn't a hack of Donkey Kong Land 2 (Game Boy, not NES), but an original port of Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) that has nothing to do with the official version, Donkey Kong Land 3.

That glitch in Harry Potter probably happens on real hardware, but I don't have the game yet, so I'm not sure, but it's very likely.

A quick update. I got a dump of this game... but I have a problem. When I try to open it in VBA, it gives me this error message: "Unsupported ram size 38", what does this mean!? Can I fix it?

EDIT: Apparently, it was a bad dump all along... damn... (I think it is I guess) does anyone know where I can get a proper dump of this game?
No, it's a good dump, but it uses a mapper that no emulator currently supports. That also happens for other un-modified Sachen dumps. I got a set from Rom-Shepherd a few months ago, and experienced the same problem, and after researching, I found out that was the cause. Either someone needs to make an emulator that supports the mapper, or there needs to be a "fixed" version like Taizou makes of his dumps on the Handheld Underground. Taizou said he MIGHT do it, but since he knows nothing about it, he said not to "hold your breath".

Mega Drive/Genesis / The REAL origin of SDK 99's SFX
« on: May 13, 2015, 03:55:32 PM »
The Bootleg Games Wikia says that most of Super Donkey Kong '99's sound effects are taken from Streets of Rage.
"In terms of audio, the title screen has a remake of the opening theme from the first DKC while the first two worlds use music from Super Mario All-Stars, and most of the sound effects were taken from Streets of Rage."
However, that's NOT the case. Most of the sound effects are actually, fittingly, taken from the Donkey Kong Country games, and most of the sounds are played back at the wrong sample rate, so they probably used a sample ripping tool such as SNESSOR95 to do it, and didn't change the sample rate. (Yes, that utility existed in 1999.)
For example, the "Hi-ya!" sound for collecting an extra life is a sample from "Funky's Fugue" in the first Donkey Kong Country game. The "Aw!" sound Donkey Kong makes when he dies is the same as the sound for Rambi, one of the crocodile enemies, and King K. Rool taking damage. One of the sounds for killing an enemy is a slightly sped-up version of the annoying sound that barrel guy from Donkey Kong Country 2 makes. The sound effect on the title screen is a slightly sped-up version of the sound the falling enemies from Donkey Kong Country make (the ones on the pirate deck). And more.
The only sound effects that AREN'T taken from DKC games are the ones that aren't sampled, such as collecting bananas or throwing barrels.
It's also worth noting that the factory music seems to be a poorly-done version of the "Life in the Mines" music from Donkey Kong Country, and the last level's music is the boss theme from Super Mario All-Stars.

Codeman38 is there a chance of using special dumping software to redump the cartridge for legend of heroes. All i can see in my graphics editor are sprites.
That's probably because all of the background graphics are compressed, meaning they won't show up on most tile editors. I got that same result from pretty much every game by Yong Yong/Makon Soft, regardless of whether the dump is good or bad.

Also they changed Mario's Name to SOMARI, I Was poking some roms, and i have found a alternative title, just called ''MARIO''
I think they did that to avoid the ''evil copyrights'' ;)
You know, it just occured to me...I think that explains the unlicensed game name "Marou".  ;)

That's definitely a hack of the Street Fighter II port I linked to. So, are you saying that there's no title screen?

Mega Drive/Genesis dumps / Angry Birds Star Wars (Unl) ROM

I've recognized 2 songs from Mario 4: Space Odyssey. One of them plays on the first part of the map select, and the other is a random level theme. They're at a lower tone, though.

http://andlabs.lostsig.com/smw64fixed.bin Here's mine; I took care to get rid of every mention of the additional hardware from this ROM. I wanted to wait for someone to beat the game to make sure it all worked before posting it but whatever :/ I'll post later detailing exactly what I did and why, but with Gigasoft's ROM spreading already I guess there are no problems with whatever leftover data accesses his has.
:yay: I hvae something to reccomend and some bugs that i found while i was playing the game. On the first level where mario is supposed to grab the red shell and throw it up is glitched. You have the ablitie to go straight through the shell and you cant pick it up. i would also like if i could be a game tester of yours. I just bought a new Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player. It has the six button layout and can play sega genesis games, so with technology like this we ca port Nintendo games to the genesis. I am wondering if this game is a hack or homebrew. If its a homebrew then thats great cause i have a few ideas to make your game better. 1. Change the mario jump sound to original jump sound 2. Add a level select 3. Add yoshi, and ll of the mario powerups. so yeh those are my reccomendations. And i would love to be a tester for this game to tell you bugs and other things if you want the help you can email me at efrenant@gmail.com . I always have free time so i can play the game for hours nonstop. So yeah mayb you can fix this and add some of my reccomendations. :) bye
I have three more:
1. Add a water level.
2. Make Bowser the final boss, instead of that...thing. If that actually is supposed to be Bowser, then redraw him.
3. Replace all the music stolen from other games with real Super Mario World music.
