I have that Harry Potter 2 - its actually a title hack/Chinese translation of Record of Lodoss War (the board game)
...OK, bootleggers truly make no sense.

Some interesting things from Sky League:

Two copies of Crazy Monopoly! Fully boxed, or loose cartridge (standard GB mold, not the VF-specific one?).

Then there's some other Monopoly cart (titled "Rich Man" in English!), apparently manufactured by Li Cheng. Maybe VF's, maybe not. Who knows. (Edit: Apparently the cover art for that one is taken from the Rich Man game for PC. Typical Li Cheng, in other words.) Also, this one, which I know has been linked before, because why the heck is Detective Conan on it?!

Harry Potter 3. The VFame shoot-em-up, apparently (strategy is listed as "STG", i.e., shooting). There's also Harry Potter 2, which they have classified as a puzzle game? *puzzled* Probably the shooting game as well, given the English version was titled Harry Potter 2.

But on the bright side: if it's software emulation, there's probably some way to hack into the firmware and use it to dump ROMs. :-D

From what I've seen of the previous Retron systems, they're much better than Atgames' stuff--at least the sound channels all play in the same key. Sound emulation still isn't perfect, though; the NES noise channel is unusually loud on the Retron3. (It's really noticeable with Solstice, which uses the noise channel for metallic-sounding percussion...)

Though they did say that they've revamped the audio emulation for the Retron5, so...who knows.

I'm honestly surprised at how many of these have music that's actually decent.

Noticed something interesting in one of Qiezei's scans while looking back at some of those-- his cart of Ge Dou Jian Shen (one of the GBA-sized GBC carts) lists the mailing address in Taichung together with the mainland phone number.

So, for those who haven't heard... Hyperkin, the company that markets a whole bunch of Famiclones, has announced a new system called the Retron 5 that's coming out this summer. Which is compatible with 60-pin Famicom, 72-pin NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES/SFC, GBC, and GBA cartridges.

Here's the video of the official announcement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OcNy7t17LA

I'm very curious as to how their system-on-a-chip handles GB stuff, now! Especially the unlicensed games, which tend to be finicky even on official systems...

That is absolutely the same Aladdin 2 cart shown on 64scener's page. Nice find indeed!

The Russian reseller mentioned in the Lost Levels thread also claimed the Sintax games are 128 megabit. Hm.

(Maybe they just used a 128-megabit chip, and just repeated the same code over all of the banks, similar to the VFame games' dumps?)

Game Boy / VFame's Pokemon Ruby box art reused for a PocketNES hack?
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:45:51 PM »
OK, this is an interesting one. While Googling to find some old forum threads related to bootleg games, I stumbled across this one where someone posted about finding a "Pokemon Green Diamond" cart for GBA (actually a PocketNES cart of a Keroppi hack):

http://s15.zetaboards.com/Tulunk_Village?topic=515226/1/

I think I remember stumbling across this post back in 2008 or 2009. But I just noticed something new about it now that I'm even more familiar with Game Boy bootlegs.

Specifically: check out the back of the box. It is taken directly from VFame's Pokemon Ruby for GBC. Like, they just photocopied the box and added new logos on top of it.

Which, of course, leads me to wonder just how these bootleggers even had access to the box from that particular bootleg...

I had actually stumbled across that thread before, but never actually thought to look at those things in more detail...

Out of all of those, Mario Cart, Hulk 2, and Digimon look like they're probably Sintax's work as well. Same official-looking "Only for Game Boy Advance" sidebar, and similar-looking fake ESRB ratings.

(And though its box style is entirely different, I have to wonder about the Hulk game with a random Crash Bandicoot picture on it...)

Seems like Sintax started off doing fairly well when they had BBD developing for them... but the stuff they started releasing after BBD split up with them was a harbinger of what was to come on GBA.

Pokemon Leaf Green, Pokemon Platinum, and Super Sonik II, anyone? And I swear there was yet another game based on that same engine as well.

Edit: Ah, that was the other one--The Incredibles!

The Crash game that 64scener recorded footage of is "Crash Bandicoot IV" according to the title screen. Is there actually a Crash III as well?

Definitely Sintax I think. Even the manual pages and warning text on those 64scener pages look Sintaxy. They did reuse some of their GBC engines a *lot*, so it's not exactly unprecedented - they probably had no idea how to code a GBA game from scratch so they just ended up using that same engine over and over again.
...I just realized something that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that these are Sintax's work.

The instruction manuals for these GBA games contain the phrase "pease protect your eyes, avoid playing too long time".

That exact same wording--typo and all--appears on many of Sintax's GBC boxes. (See, for instance, True Three Kingdoms.)
Found this picture in this Polish forum thread showing a Harry Potter IV cart.

Yep, looks like it is indeed one of these-- the product code is E12-U4.

And doing some Googling, I see 64scener discovered this one a while back as well-- doesn't seem to be linked from anywhere on his site that I can find, curiously enough:

http://www.64scener.com/gba/pir-mariodx.htm

Also, guess what Aladdin 2 for GBA is? Even the freaking manual is the same.

http://www.64scener.com/gba/pir-alad2.htm

Edit: It's linked from this blog archive page, which is how Google found it. I should probably do an archive binge to see if he's posted about any more of these...

So a few people here might have seen pictures floating around the internet of the box art for a "Super Mario DX" game for Game Boy Advance. I think the consensus had been that it was either a PocketNES cart, or possibly the original Mario DX for GBC inside a GBA case.

Nope. Turns out it's neither of those. Someone has posted a video of it on YouTube...and, well, suffice it to say, it's a GBA-native platformer made by Sintax.

Yes, folks: it's that engine again...
