Which, if I'm interpreting Google's translation correctly, means that Sintax (新特奇) and Vast Fame (广誉) cooperated on a GBA Digimon (数码暴龙) game. (With the "digital tyrannosaur" translation of "Digimon" used in the HK dub, no less.) Possibly that weird platformer that I've seen screenshots of on Sky League?

That'd definitely explain the Crash Bandicoot pirate that uses the same engine, anyway... it looks and plays Sintax-y, but the music is unmistakably Vast Fame.

Edit: Or maybe it's only referring to their GBC games, which had the dinosaur mascot; their monochrome games didn't. That'd make more sense - that the GBC Gowin was a new company unrelated to the old B&W one...

Oh, interesting, the part about Mars mentions the reuse of background music (e.g., Final Fantasy 5, Yuefei, and Titanic RPG) and the "less HP = less attack" thing that many of us detest. :) Also mentions the stolen graphics from Link's Awakening, heh.

Edit: Or at least that's the ROM name, anyway. The title screen reads "Chongwu", i.e., "pets", and...I don't know the other three characters, but they're not part of Digimon or Pokémon. The subtitle is 翡翠版 Feicui ban, "jade edition". Wonder where the ROM name came from, anyway-- was that what was printed on the cartridge?

OK, I'll start working on a page about PC Paint, at least, since it's been mentioned on several pages already. Plus I can get screenshots easily since I have it installed in DosBox. :)

If I do a second one, it'll probably be about Deluxe Paint, since I've got an old copy of that too.

edit: and Yong Yong's too. [/quote]Ah, interesting. If I'm reading the Chinese Wiki article correctly (and take this with a grain of salt, since I'm using a dictionary and Google Translate :P ), different media (e.g., video games vs. anime) use different titles for the series in Taiwan!

Edit: Ah, that explains it. The zh-TW Digimon article appears to be an automated conversion of the zh-CN article, but this isn't the case for the Pokemon one. So the "Taiwanese" article is using the mainland title. This is confusing. :huh:

Edit further: OK, I was right the first time-- looking further on Google, some Taiwanese translations use the mainland name, some use the Hong Kong name. Interesting! Ah, the wild world of title translations.
Oh, another weird thing. That "Digimon Zhi Hong Lan..." GBA game dumped by SkyLeague that VFame supposedly made? Its actual title is nothing to do with Digimon. The characters on the title screenshot very clearly are "koudai yaoguai"-- and it's even got a Pokeball on it, as if it weren't clear enough.

So I was just doing a bit of random Wikipedia research, prompted by the observation in the Wiki article on Pokemon Saphire that "Magic Baby" is what Pokemon are called in Taiwan. And what I found out was that in different parts of the Chinese-speaking world, Pokemon are called different things!

On the mainland, they're 口袋妖怪 Kǒudài yāoguài, which is a literal translation of "pocket monsters".

In Hong Kong, they're 寵物小精靈, which would be pronounced in Mandarin as Chǒngwù xiǎo jīnglíng, though I have no idea how it'd be said in Cantonese (Edit: According to MandarinTools.com, that's chung mat siu jing ling). This means "pet elves". (And yes, this explains that one bootleg version of Pokemon Crystal where the mons are referred to as "elves".)

And in Taiwan, they're 神奇寶貝 Shénqí bǎobèi, which are indeed "magic babies".

So now, if you see a Pokemon bootleg, you should be able to figure out where it's from.


The same is true of Digimon, too, for that matter:

In the mainland and Taiwan, they're 数码宝贝 / 數碼寶貝 Shùmǎ bǎobèi, "digital babies".

In Hong Kong, they're 數碼暴龍 Shùmǎ bàolóng (Edit: sou ma bou lung in Cantonese), "digital tyrannosaurs" - where the Chinese for "tyrannosaur" is, in turn, literally translated as "violent dragon". (Yep, this is why some of the Digimon games are called "Digital Dragon"!)

I'm considering adding a section for tools that were used by pirate developers in the development of their games. These will often be shared among games made by the same developer or closely related developers.

Things I'm considering adding include:
* PC Paint - A very popular paint program amongst pirate devs. Pretty much all the companies based out of the greater Taichung area (Gamtec, Chuanpu, V.Fame) used it, as did Super Game and BBD.
* Deluxe Paint - Equally popular amongst pirate devs. Hummer Team, BBD, and Yong Yong have all used this one, judging from fonts used in their games.
* Borland BGI - The graphics library from Borland's Turbo compilers, the font from which has appeared in games by NTDEC.
* Tomsoft Studio Sega Kit - Used for a number of pirate Mega Drive games.
* Gamtec Gameboy Hex -> Update Bin - Referenced in a number of pirate Game Boy ROMs. I still have no idea what this tool actually did (patcher? compiler? converter?), but it obviously existed.

Anyone think this would be worth adding?

Good idea. Everything I've seen seems to suggest they're one and the same as well. The games credited to NTDEC and Mega Soft even use the same Borland BGI font!

Super Famicom/SNES / SNES pirate sound drivers

It's pretty much common knowledge by now that X-Men vs. Street Fighter pirate uses music directly from Street Fighter II, and that the Pokemon platformers use music from Bonkers. But there's another sound engine that seems to show up in pretty much every pirate that uses semi-original music.

Turns out that it, too, is from a Capcom game-- namely, Super Pang, a.k.a. Super Buster Bros.

This one's used in Pokemon Stadium, Tekken, and that Super Big 2 game that I saw on NicoVideo a while back. Pokemon Stadium and Super Big 2 both use a fanfare from Super Pang; it's track 28, "All Clear", in the music rip from SNESMusic.org. The sound effects are identical too.

And of course, the pirates actually apparently re-coded the Gravity Beetle theme from Mega Man X3 for the Super Pang sound engine; it's not ripped from MMX3 at all. Seriously, what.

Incidentally, Barver, are you planning on adding the pictures to the TTA3 page on the Bootleg Games Wiki? I just added the Great Circus Mystery trivia, but haven't added any screenshots because I didn't know if it was OK.

Oh, just noticed something else. On the manual page from Fengshen, as shown in the Wiki article, the cover art is different. Squirrel King has the background from Great Circus Mystery, while TTA3 has a background from something else entirely.

Also, I know I've seen those heart icons before. I was thinking Rocket Knight Adventures, but that's not it. It's not one of the official Tiny Toons games either. And now I'm trying to rack my brain to remember what they are from...

Yeah, gotta be Gamtec or a closely related company. Those fonts are definitely from PC Paint, and I don't remember any other MD devs using them. (And I think I've seen the font used for "Press Start Button", too, despite it not being from the version of PC Paint that was released into the public domain.)

I love the ripped-off graphics from Super Mario World. Lulz. And I swear I've seen some of those other levels somewhere else.

Also? The Japanese text on the back of the package is about... Mickey Mouse and Disneyland. Of course.

Come to think of it, I ought to do a post on recognizing fonts from old paint programs. Deluxe Paint's fonts are all over the place in bootleg games, about as prevalent (if not more prevalent) than PC Paint's.
