Game Boy / West Story (西遊記)
« on: September 15, 2012, 07:16:51 PM »
For those who don't follow Qiezei/Nusutto/Watari's YouTube channel yet... an interesting little treat from the Vast Fame 8-in-1 cart (which was completely unadvertised on its packaging!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67NTtHzu1G0

Yeah, it's definitely clear now that Vast Fame had something to do with that Harry Potter 3 shmup.

Pirate Talk / Qi Sheng Long = sister company of Ending Man?
« on: May 06, 2012, 11:31:49 AM »
Just discovered something that's possibly as big of a deal as when we discovered that Waixing owned Subor:

http://www.ending-man.com/

Yep, that appears to be the "Ending Man" company that made many Famiclones back in the day, or at the very least, its modern-day successor. That's exactly the same logo that appeared on those consoles.

But here's where it gets interesting.

Note the company name on the above-linked site: "Dongguan Feihao Industrialist Co. Ltd."

Now, according to our own Wiki page on Qi Sheng Long (emphasis mine):

Quote:

According to its website it also uses the brands Hengmei, Feihao, Qijian and Meitrumei, and it has a Hong Kong office called Glorypower International Electronic Ltd. [/quote]Gotta be a coincidence, right?

Well... not entirely. Although QSL is based in Shenzhen and Ending Man is based in Dongguan, the two companies are clearly linked.

Proof? At the upper right corner of the Ending Man site is a link to "奇胜隆电子"-- that is, Qi Sheng Long Electronics!

Pirate Talk / R.I.P., Cube Tech's web site
« on: April 22, 2012, 05:35:59 PM »
In yet another instance of Chinese domain-name roulette, it appears that Cube Tech no longer owns the http://tec-cube.com/ domain. It now belongs to... some sort of Taobao offshoot targeted specifically toward women's fashion? O_o

...Whatever it is, it's definitely not the Cube Tech that we know and love here.

EDIT 27-Nov-2012: They're back, at their old domain! http://cubetac.com/

Discussion Center / Google Maps' April Fools gag
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:18:20 PM »
Google never fails to amuse during April Fool's Day. And this time, Google Maps has introduced a new feature that's totally relevant to this forum. :D

But first, go watch the promotional video for it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rznYifPHxDg

No idea how long past April Fool's Day it will stay up, but right now, if you go to Google Maps and click on "Quest", you'll be able to browse the entire map in this mode.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Game Boy / Of metal slugs and heroic zooks
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:23:58 AM »
Qiezei's just posted video of one of his latest acquisitions, Sintax's Metal Slug X.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjnT__KIkYQ

Compare to the infamously obscure Zook Hero 3 by Sintax, which Sky League has dumped but not released:

http://www.efgcw.com/?dp-bbsthread-716.html

Combined with the fact that Metal Slug X uses music from Mega Man 2 (of course they chose the ear-splitting-est one)... yeah, I think this might be yet another of Sintax's sprite hacks of their own games.

Edited to add: Yep, one of the backgrounds is even identical to Sky League's screenshot. Lazy sprite hack ahoy!

On the bright side, though, at least we have a definitive answer to whether Zook Hero 3 is anywhere near as good as VFame's entries in the series. (Namely, "No.")

Pirate Talk / Is this the composer from Chuanpu and VFame?
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:18:24 PM »
So a while back, in an access-restricted thread (this one, for those who can access it), taizou observed that there is a singer/songwriter in Taiwan named Liao Yi-shen (廖益伸), who also goes by the pseudonym Liao Da-sen (廖大森). Here's the Wikipedia article on him (in Chinese), and here's a song credit confirming the pseudonym. This guy's no small fry; he's written for some big Chinese pop stars such as Andy Lau.

So why am I bringing this up in this thread? Of course it's related to bootleg games. There's a 廖益伸 credited for music in games by Chuanpu and Vast Fame, with perhaps the most famous works being Barver Battle Saga and Soul Falchion.

Perhaps this is sheer coincidence... but the more I find on this guy, the more likely it seems that it's not a coincidence. For instance:

#1: He appears to be from the Taichung area. Which, not coincidentally, was also Gamtec/Chuanpu/VFame's home turf.

#2: He's written music for a modern Taiwanese RPG (水靈仙子 "Shui Ling the Fairy").

(Anyone with sufficient knowledge of Chinese want to try contacting him? He appears to have several social media presences that I've found, at least under the 廖大森 name...)

Game Boy / The source of Gowin's sound driver
« on: December 24, 2011, 05:02:35 PM »
I just realized, thanks to NusuttoSan's recently posted video of Magic Lamp, where Gowin reverse-engineered their sound driver from.

I already spoiled it in the comments, so don't peek if you want to guess... but I'll give a hint: the sound effect at 1:55 is a dead giveaway if you've played the game in question.

The answer's in the video's comments for those who still aren't sure. :)

Edit: ...And my memory is made of fail, as always. I already mentioned this back in the video for Stone Age. ::facepalm::

Edit #2: This also serves as a connection between Gowin's color and monochrome games. Despite the...very different quality of the music composition, the mono games also use a Konami sound driver. (See, for instance, the pause sound in Rainbow Prince.)

Game Boy / That infamous GBA platformer again...
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:29:24 AM »
If you've seen the videos of Crash Bandicoot IV, Rayman IV, or Digimon Adventure, you already know what awaits in... Spider-Man 3 (Russian Version)!

Edit: And I see from the comments that Barver already discovered this a month ago, but hey, it's news to me. :P

Game Boy / The other Digimon Ruby
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:01:22 PM »
Surprised Qiezei hadn't posted anything here about his latest acquisition:

http://qiezei.blogspot.com/2011/12/collection-update-08-12042011-digimon.html

It's Digimon 3 Crystal. In Engrish. Released by New Game Color Advance under the title "Digimon Ruby". Not to be confused, of course, with Vast Fame's other Digimon Ruby RPG.

Even more interestingly, this was released by the New Game Color Advance brand-- a label which, as discussed here in the past, has released titles from Vast Fame and Sintax. And the logo design on the cartridge is exactly the same style as on Digimon Sapphire (GBC), a VFame strategy RPG... but also Digimon Amethyst and Yellow Jade, which are Sintax platformers!

Curiouser and curiouser, as both Alice and VFame's localization team would say. :)

Edit: Also, I'm pretty confident that, although New Game Color Advance may have distributed this cart, the localization is 100% Vast Fame. Note that the screenshot of the 'character select' screen has an entirely different layout... with PC Paint fonts, no less.

Game Boy / Text dumps for Digimon Ruby & Sapphire
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:58:37 PM »
I already brought this up on the Digimon Ruby dump thread, but I figured out how to dump the text from the Digimon Ruby and Sapphire ROMs. The trick is that they're not only encoded using a non-ASCII encoding table, but that it's a 16-bit table (i.e., each character uses 2 bytes).

And, well, the translations in these games are hilarious, so a text dump was totally necessary. :D

Each of these files is a ZIP file containing both the text dump itself, and the Python implementation that I used to extract it.

Digimon Ru[rb]y: http://cl.ly/2u3r191k3J1k1m2I1J2R
Digimon Sapphire: http://cl.ly/0N1F3746041G0h3L0n38

The latter, of course, is significantly smaller than the former, since it's a platformer. But its translation is equally hilarious.

Enjoy!

Pirate Talk / ExtraLives.org's Bootleg Bonanza livestream
« on: September 22, 2011, 05:27:05 PM »
I just found out about this almost a month after it was actually livestreamed, but hey, better late than never...

The guys behind ExtraLives.org did basically a day-long playthrough of bootleg games for charity. And from what I've been watching of it so far, it's... quite hilarious.

The entire stream is available here, broken up into a whole bunch of parts:

http://www.twitch.tv/extralives/videos

Most of them are ones we already know and love (albeit with entertaining commentary), but there are a few interesting undumped ones too-- like the Engrish translations of Pokemon Gold and Silver, played from an actual cartridge.

Pirated Work / Converted fonts from DeluxePaint II Enhanced
« on: August 20, 2011, 08:04:25 PM »
So, I've successfully managed to reverse-engineer the font format used in DeluxePaint II Enhanced. Which, as I'm sure I've mentioned numerous times here, is second only to PC Paint in how often its stock fonts are used in bootleg games. (These fonts are also used in more than a few legitimate games, incidentally-- DeluxePaint was quite popular amongst video game developers in general.)

I'm considering converting all these to TrueType at some point in the future, but I've already got the whole set converted into Unix BDF format as it is (they load into FontForge and look perfect!). Here's the zip of the BDF files, for anyone who might be able to do something with them, along with the Python script I made to convert the originals.

Y'all might recognize this one from a few bootleg games, for instance:

Or how 'bout this one?

Or this one? I think I've even seen this one used by Nice Code:

Diablo! (Really Fatal Labyrinth.)
Fast & Furious 5! (Really Combat Cars.)
Ice Age 3 & 4! (Both Chuck Rock.)
Hugo! (Really Chuck Rock 2.)

...well, you get the idea.
Oh, dude, he's also got an unencrypted version of Battle of Red Cliffs on this other page.

2000-present / Viewing VT03 sprites
« on: August 15, 2011, 10:58:15 AM »
So, as y'all might have noticed, VT03 ROMs use a slightly non-standard format for their 4-bit-color sprites that none of the tile editors seem to be able to properly handle.

However, one nice thing about Tile Molester is that it's very easily extendable by design: it's possible to add new formats simply by editing a human-readable XML file.

So here's the trick:

In the directory where tm.jar is stored, you'll find a file "tmspec.xml". Edit that file in your choice of text editor (Notepad works fine). Above the line "</tileformats>", add the following lines:

Code: HTML

       <compositetile id="CP04" formats="PL00,PL00,PL00,PL00">
            <description>4bpp planar, composite (VT03)</description>
        </compositetile>

Now, when you next launch TM, you'll find that in the View → Codec menu, there's a new option "4bpp planar, composite (VT03)". Choose it, and voilà. Legible sprites!

Discussion Center / China has fake Harry Potter books too!
« on: July 19, 2011, 02:39:00 PM »
From "11 Points", a list of 11 fake Harry Potter books that have been published in China.

Amusingly, one of these books is even the literary equivalent of a lazy sprite hack. It is, quite literally, The Hobbit but with character names changed.
