You can always tell carts that are over 20 years old by the following:

- the plastic feels far more sturdy than "cheap yellow carts". Sometimes nearly on par with real famicom games.
- the label is usually faded or discolored.
- the PCB is the "big chip" style rather than a tiny little glob-top style.

Everything about the photos and your description suggests this is a 90s copy of Somari, from back when they were produced with much better quality. I have a few older Hummer team games in really solid old cartridges that are black or dark blue, and the difference in build quality from 2005-and-later famiclone stuff is night and day.

Wow, hearing Titenic with "proper" music for the first time after so long is mind-blowing.. I need to get the ABAB soft version of this rom added to my Hummer collection pronto.

Reviving this thread for a very interesting discovery that I apparently made years ago and forgot about until someone recently replied to it on Youtube

1993-1999 / Re: Mario World NES/Tagin' Dragon Music?

I had the same reaction when I first played the SMW bootleg way back in the day, the song blends in fine.

...But also, holy SHIT this thread is ancient. My life was in a pretty different place back then. Thanks for the memories!

Famicom/NES / "Rose's Theme" in Harry's Legend/Titenic/MK3?
« on: April 23, 2020, 03:02:33 AM »
Can someone please show me where/how this song sounds anything like Rose's theme?

https://youtu.be/T4U1mvFbb6U - Music from Titenic/Harry's Legend

https://youtu.be/KCD6-3Dj4kA - Rose's Theme from Titanic (My Heart Will Go On)

This has been bothering me for about 9 years now, lol. People regularly refer to the Famicom track as "Rose's Theme" and many know there's an extended version of the song in the UMK3 bootleg - https://youtu.be/yC-XZAMWdLA?t=163

Can someone point out any similarity between these two songs at all? I'm a musician and it's always been bothering me that people keep saying it's Rose's Theme when I can't hear one single note in common.

Maybe someone can show me the similarity, if indeed there is one to show? The song sounds 100% original to my ears, both the Harry's Legend and UMK3 version. Thanks!  ;D

Thank you for the clarification, MLX. Loopy's rom was the only one where I got flawless play on FCEUX and the EverDrive cart, which is not surprising.  I can live without the level select - it's nice for not having to play the whole game in one sitting, but it's not worth sacrificing functionality.

Thanks so much for posting this rom, I really appreciate it!

I just gave it a spin in fceux and it has screen garble at the top as I run, but a totally different type of screen garble than the other version has on the EverDrive cart. I'll test it in the cart and see how it goes. Either way, this rom is definitely distinct from all the other ones I have, so the collection expands.. Thanks again  ;D

I figured this would be one of the best places to ask about this. There are a whole bunch of ROMs of Super Mario Bros 2 J floating around out there, most of them are incomplete or otherwise messed up somehow. It's an absolute shitshow for someone trying to load a bunch of ROMs onto a flash cart!

The ROM that I originally came across was called "Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) (Unl).nes". At a glance it looks like a common pirate version - The title screen is removed, but after 10 minutes of playing, you won't notice much difference. However, I tried selecting Luigi, and it's just a palette swap of Mario - Even the name still says Mario above the score, there are no higher jumps like Luigi is supposed to have.

Luckily I found an IPS patch for this particular ROM here: http://www.lngn.net/stuff/ It seems to fix most of the issues and bring back proper functionality with Luigi, the wind physics and several other things. It even adds the ability to select world/level on the title screen by pressing A and B. Very useful considering how difficult this game is! There's just one flaw, it's acceptable, but still annoying: The Score/Lives/Timer part of the screen are slightly garbled. Still legible, but the graphics are constantly sort of moving and glitching around in a somewhat distracting way..

I turns out, the only proper patched version of SMB2 was edited by a guy named Loopy, and can be found here: https://3dscapture.com/NES/ This is as close as you can possibly get to a 1:1 recreation of the FDS version, just in NES format. However, this one lacks the wonderful little level select feature! (as it should, considering it aims to be a faithful NES port of the FDS original.)

The point of this ramble is that I would love a version that has everything working right in NES format (as loopy's edited version does) but also incorporates the level select feature, which allows you to select worlds 9, A, B, C and D.

Can anyone lead me to any IPS patches or otherwise that implement this change into loopy's version? Everything I find when I attempt to search for it has to do with Game Genie codes and whatnot.

This is basically just me being picky and wanting a version of SMB2 J that works 100% perfectly in NES format but also has that level select feature and doesn't have those irritating garbled graphics at the top. It appears RetroUSB used to sell a reproduction cart that is exactly what I describe, but it hasn't been sold or produced for quite some time. I actually have an awesome SMB2 J repro for my NES, fully functional, well built, very satisfied with it as a standalone cart but again this is unfortunately the version without the built-in level select.

I have already devoted far too many hours to trying to dig up what I describe, and hell, it may not exist. To muddy the waters even further, in the patched version with the level select, the garbled graphics do not show up in FCEUX, just on my EverDrive cart. The ROM refuses to even load in Nestopia. I know the EverDrive cart can't be the problem, as loopy's 1:1 version works flawlessly in the same cart.

If you guys have any tips for me, that would be swell.  ;D

This is dreadful news.

I just have to clarify - Are these forums and all posts going to be archived somehow? There's so much info here from the pioneering era of learning about famicom bootlegs, it would be beyond awful to lose all of that due to this switch they're foisting upon us.. I know I haven't been properly active here for years now but I'm still an avid bootleg collector and find myself referencing pages on this forum in my searches and whatnot quite regularly. I know a ton of people would be devastated if the forum history was lost.

Just had to pipe up and ask - Sorry for the massive headache this has been/will probably continue to be for you, KingPepe.

Game Boy / "Star Wars 3"?
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:40:37 AM »
I guess it wouldn't be the first time we've seen two bootlegs using the same name, but that's extremely rare. Damn, I was hoping for a pirate original of some sort - It feels like every stone has been turned on that front!

Announcements & News / BootlegGames Wiki's 7th anniversary

Extremely late reply, but here's to another 7 years. Funny how bootleg games saw a huge rise in popularity over the last year or two, now everyone knows about them - In 2010/2011 so much excellent progress was made and so much research was done. I was never a huge part of the community but I've always loved the sheer dedication to uncovering every last little detail possible. Pre 2010, finding any info on bootlegs was a royal pain in the arse.

Wow, you sure have no taste.

Doom on SNES was an impressive feat and showed that graphics could never overtake the gameplay. It featured accuracy of the levels and monster variety not seen in most of the console Doom ports of its time. And GBA port, are you serious? You're going to rip on a translation of a game that was impressively translated to a handheld system, no less? At least you got the 32X part right.[/quote]
Doom on SNES was very impressive from a technical standpoint but the gameplay is trash because of the pregnant pause between you hitting a button and the game reacting.. Not to mention the lack of circle strafing which is one of Doomguy's key maneuvers! Good from a technical standpoint =/= fun to play.

The GBA version ain't half bad though, not sure why I mentioned that one.
