So I was trying out the crappy GBC game "N-Sync: Get To The Show" and discovered something strange:

If you wait on the screen where you type in your player's name, you'll hear that the triangle channel is unmistakably Hummer's "wah-wah" instrument.  O_o  As much as you guys hate emulation links, I have no choice but to prove my point with one (it's a flash emulator, so it'll work right away)

1993-1999 / Release dates of Famicom pirates?
« on: April 20, 2016, 04:10:45 PM »
Does anyone know how to find out the release date of pirate Famicom games? I'm not keen for the exact day, just the month would be enough.

I'm guessing you can find the month on the PCB or in the rom, but is there another way?

Game Boy / My new Gameboy multicarts
« on: April 17, 2016, 10:17:44 AM »
I visited a flea market in my town today and came back with two bootleg multicarts:

The first is the ALL COLOR 7 in 1 (A) which contains:
1. Lola Bunny (Bugs & Lola Bunny: Carrot Crazy)
2. Pocket Block (Pocket Color Block)
3. Frogger (Majesco remake)
4. Mickey Chase (Mickey's [Dangerous] Chase)
5. Tom & Jarry [sic] 2 (Tom & Jerry Part 2, on the menu as "TOM & JERRY CAT")
6. Super Mario (Mario Land)
7. Top Tennis

The second one is more crappier, the NEW - Q 32 IN 1. Of the 32 games included, they're just the same six games repeated over and over again. These games are:

1. Spider Man 3 (Spider Man: Invasion of the Spider Slayers) This has some pretty funky music for an LJN game.  :)
2. Mickey Mouse 3 (again, Mickey's [Dangerous] Chase)
3. Duck Tales
4. Soccer Mania
5. Dead Heat Scramble. (Never heard of this game before. It looks like a Micro Machines ripoff, but apparently it isn't)
6. Tennis (The Gameboy version of NES Tennis)

Pirate Talk / My "feel" for when bootlegs were released
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:01:44 PM »
Ever since I got into bootleg games, I've been having a special feel for when a bootleg was released, especially for Yong Yongs and Hummer Teams. Not the exact day, but the month if the year is provided.

And no, I can't explain it. :D

Here are some examples:
Super Mario 3 Special - July/August 2000
Pokemon Adventure - November or December 2000
Final Fight 3 - late August/early September-October 1998
Pokemon Diamond (SMB3S hack) Early 2001
Pokemon Jade (SA7 hack) Summer 2001
Rockman 8 - mid-1999?
Street Fighter Zero 2 '97 - July 1997
DKC4 - September 1997
Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan - December 1999
Hercules II - ca. early April 1999?
KOF '00 - July/August 2000?
Rockman X3 (GBC) and Sonic Adventure 8 - both ca. March 2000?

Now the question is: Is there any sort of feature (ROM date, final build date) that could back up these dates?

Mega Drive/Genesis / Help!
« on: October 16, 2015, 09:21:36 AM »
My Russian copy of Top Fighter 2000 MK VIII arrived in the mail today (in a small box, so likely the Megadrive Portable version) When I tried to put it in my Megadrive, it wouldn't fit no matter how I tried to insert it. Does anyone have a solution to this problem??

Hacker Center / Black Widow
« on: May 06, 2015, 01:02:54 PM »
I'm a newbie to the forum and to hacking/producing unlicensed games generally, but for a while, I've been working on this.

This is a Genesis platformer, running on the same engine as Mulan, hence using some of its substages and music, and is loosely based on Avengers: Age of Ultron. You play as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff from the Marvel universe, through 4 levels with each 2-3 or slightly more substages. The music is mostly from Barver Battle Saga, although some others tracks are from Mulan. Like Mulan, many resources are stolen from other Genesis games. (The boss theme, save for the final boss, is "Danger" from BBS)

The controls are spot-on and direct, but there is no support for the Genesis 6-button joypad, much like VFVST2. Romanoff punches with the A button, and kicks with the B button, while the C button jumps.

Stage 1 - Upstate New York. This stage has four sections: First you fight through hostile Shield employees (with the new Shield HQ in the background) Second, you progress through two heavily altered substages from Mulan. Fourth, you battle Nick Fury. Graphics in this level are stolen from the intro of Spirou for the Genesis. This stage's theme is "Walking Around" from BBS.

Stage 2 - Sokovia. Here you fight through hostile Sokovians, and later Tony Stark/Iron Man. This stage's theme is "Sacred Temple" from BBS. Graphics are modified and stolen from Comix Zone.

Stage 3 - Seoul. In this stage you progress through Seoul, fighting against hostile Seoulites and later Thor as a boss. You also have to save Helen.

Stage 4 - Home. This stage, set around Hawkeye's safehouse, is the last and hardest of the game, where you fight against Ultron. The game then cuts to a screen of Romanoff sitting in front of a sunset with the word "FIN" above. The boss theme here is the final boss one from Mulan. Note that here, Ultron acts as the boss of the stage; there is no sub-boss.
I tried to piece the original print together with a rage comic maker, this is the best I can do.
In case you're wondering, the Chinese text at the bottom reads: "Black Widow" in Simplified Chinese.
