Mega Drive/Genesis / SuperVision SEGA Genesis pirate?
« on: January 02, 2015, 01:35:32 PM »
So when browsing amongst SEGA genesis games I came across a listing with a very peculiar label on one game. I've cropped out that game here:

I know the top text reads "Your family will enjoy playing home video entertainment like never before!". I'm pretty sure the yellow piece of tape below it reads "Sunset Riders", as this is the game the seller listed the cart to be in his auction.

From a little reasearch, apparently these carts originate from a Taiwan Pirate company known as "Supervision" who had also released several pirates on NES with the same "your family" tagline written on them, but I couldn't find ANY related to the genesis when I searched the phrase (or supervision), just NES ones.

Does anyone have any more info on these? The cart seems interesting to me but if it's just a copy of sunset riders on there I don't really care about owning it, as I already own a legit copy.

Pirate Talk / Your first experience with a pirate?
« on: October 20, 2014, 01:59:18 AM »
So, for all of us to have gathered here on this forum about bootleg games, we've surely had something that sparked an interest in knockoffs before it.

For me, it was a singing piglet plush at a friends' house from when I was very young, perhaps six or seven. We decided to play with it after she got it from some garage sale, but it did NOT act like piglet.

The first time we squeezed its hand, it sung allouette (a popular french children's song) in a badly compressed voice.

The second time we squeezed its hand, it let loose a BLOODCURDLING SCREAM. Badly compressed, but still.

It was terrifying as a child, and I never played with it again after that. I thought it was possessed. Looking back though, it was probably a pirate toy whose soundchip contained several mismatching recordings; allouette from some french child toy, and the scream from a halloween toy, perhaps?

That was my first experience of seeing piracy bastardize a character I knew well, but certainly not my last, being part of PGC now and all.

So, what was your first experience with pirates? It doesn't have to be a game, just as long as it wasn't legit! I'm sure there are interesting stories to be told. :)

Super Famicom/SNES / Hilarious Mortal Kombat SNES pirate?
« on: September 13, 2014, 12:01:33 AM »
Someone in one of my collector groups posted this recently from an (assumably) pirated copy of Mortal Kombat for the Super Nintendo which he described as "Full Blood Mortal Kombat". If anyone has any info on it, feel free to post, otherwise just laugh at the awful art and typos.

Going to guess it's one of the many NES pirates due to that "NES-R2 USA" in the top corner, but there's also a super nintendo logo in the bottom corner so it could be either.

EDIT: Poster claims it's an extremely rare official release before Midway got the license to MK in japan. I doubt it due to the many piratelike qualities of the thing, but will stay tuned for any other info.

Pirate Talk / Safety of handling pirate games?
« on: September 07, 2014, 01:30:24 AM »
Today I got my hands on a gameboy multi with wario land, turtles 3, captain america and a few common multi games like dr. mario and alleyway - it was pretty cheap, as the shop thought it was just a copy of wario land.

Here's what it looks like.

Pretty neat, but when driving home I started talking to a few friends I went to the shop with about the fact that I usually wash my hands after I play a pirate cartridge, just in case lead paint was used on the cartridge itself. I'm not sure how much truth is in that, but it's probably best to take that precaution with anything coming out of china unregulated.

The question I have: does anyone else do this when handling pirates? Have there been any cases of the cartridges using lead paint or anything else dangerous to obtain their colors?

Game Boy / DBZ 3 2002 Fighting Game spotted on ebay!
« on: March 29, 2014, 08:11:21 PM »
Came across a lot of GB/A games, with a very interesting one included...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-Gameboy-Advance-Sp-Game-Lot-Yugioh-The-Sacred-Cards-Dragonball-Z-3-/171283265624?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item27e1473858

Apparently a DBZ fighting game. I asked rob about it and he said it's not been dumped yet. The lot ships to the US and outside of it, so I figured I'd post it in case anyone with the ability to dump the game wants to go for it.

Game Boy / A bunch o' different multis
« on: March 09, 2014, 09:11:42 PM »

I found and quickly nabbed these four multis for a total of $20 a few days ago on ebay and I've been talking about them with rob. We both agreed the bottom right one with mario 3 special and SA7 is defintely a makon cart, but the rest are a mystery. I don't expect much out of the yellow ones, but the gray one looks interesting. They'll arrive most likely next saturday, but if anyone knows anything about these specific multis or can link any of the coverarts on them to any specific bootleg companies, I'd be interested in knowing.

Game Boy / New pirate spotted?
« on: February 19, 2014, 10:43:59 PM »
So on my usual ebay browses I spotted something rather unusual:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-15-Untested-Nintendo-Game-Boy-Games-AS-IS-/141197600617?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item20e0086769

Take a look at the cartridge on the middle-left. Not only does it have the infamous "GAME" title on the cart itself, but the label is obviously a pirated GBC label, with a very poorly affixed "2" next to the pro skater logo, as well as "PRESS START" on the bottom. In place of Tony himself appears a...random Jamaican guy? Could this be a new/undiscovered pirate, or is it most likely just the GBC proskater game in a grey Gameboy cartridge?

If anyone here that can dump games wants to try and grab this lot, let me know. I'll back out entirely and be one less person to bid it up. I don't care about owning the game so much as seeing what's on it and having it dumped if it's something new.

At the very least, a new picture for the PGMuseum.

I've already told Rob about this one, but recently one of my friends (RGXSuperSonic) informed me that he discovered a few old Dragonball Z GB pirates in his basement, Compelete in Box. We've identified both to be copies of the two licensed Dragonball Z games for the original GameBoy. One of them is Dragonball Z - Gokuu Hishouden and appears to be  the t+Chinese dump with "WOOD" and a pro yakuu baseball player on the screen before the game.

The other game, however, is a pirate of Dragonball Z - Gokuu Hekitouden, but is completely translated to english (bad engrish) and is titled on the box "Dragon Ball Z 3". I haven't seen this game on BGW's undumped list or found a page for it, but RGX found a few comments on the original game's ending from people stating they played the game in english as kids. For now, here's a few pictures of the physical game and a video of the game's opening and some gameplay.

The person who owns the cartridge doesn't have a GB dumper, but we're unsure if the scene is interested in the first place.

I'll check back here later. For now, RC out!

Mega Drive/Genesis / Strange TMNT pirate cartridge?
« on: April 05, 2013, 11:31:51 AM »
So, I was looking around ebay for genesis lots and happened upon some from a popular bulk seller. However, when looking closer in this lot, I found something rather...interesting.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Genesis-Lot-of-25-Classic-Games-/390568054424?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aefab8e98

Take a look at the bottom left corner. That's obviously a TMNT pirate, as the sticker is too small for the cartridge and it uses the logo from the 2000s reboot. Anyone know what's on it? Just hyperstone heist/tournament fighters, a glorysun graphics hack...maybe even a pirate original?

Pirated Work / "Tribute" To Lion King (chiki chiki dog)?
« on: June 10, 2012, 02:51:22 AM »
So upon checking out the newer dumps I noticed Lion King (chiki chiki dog, hack of Wacky Races) above the others, and laughed my ass off at the fact that the pirates drew simba with a cleft chin. I've donned this character "Chinba". Additionally, they've replaced the "BOW" barking projectile attack from wacky races with what appear to be strands of hair Chinba breathes.

This animation was created out of absolute boredom as tribute(?) to the "unique" look and abilities simba was given in this pirate.

Discussion Center / Suppose I should introduce myself here
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:32:10 PM »
Salutations, all. I'm Recorderdude, an animator and musician.

I came here from the bootleggameswiki, a site I frequent often, and was delighted to find it had a forum which I joined immediately.

Of course, this means I absolutely love looking through (And at times playing through) bootleg games of all kinds. Whether it be a hilaribad translation such as the vietnamese pokemon crystal or just an insane mangling and misinterpretation of a classic game, such as Rocman X on the NES or one of the many Yong Yong atrocities on the Gameboy, I give it a look. I wouldn't call myself a masochist, and there's no way I'd be devoted enough to play through any of the truly horrible pirates all the way, but I still enjoy them quite a bit overall.

I don't exactly collect pirates physically, but if I ever see something that's new and unheard of and cheap enough, I'd probably pick it up for a few laughs and post what I see.

So yeah, that's me in a nutshell as related to the forum. I could go on about what I do creatively, but that's for another time, I suppose :) Hope to see lots of cool discoveries in the future!
