Other Pirates / Shocking (Korean pirate arcade game)
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:36:02 AM »
Oh wow, it doesn't even ATTEMPT to hide the fact that it's a ripoff! All the stuff from Gensei Kai Shingeki is stolen, right down to the parodies of other arcade games.

Thanks, Korea. This is a pretty neat find, I must say.

Game Boy / Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games on the GBA?
« on: November 27, 2014, 03:10:34 AM »
While searching for bootlegs I happened to come across an Australian dude selling off a GBA SP bundled with 10 games. Now, while this seems fairly normal (aside from the outrageous-for my tastes-price of 155 US dollars), it was the games being sold that gave me more incentive to look:

Here's the bundle with the games, put into a spoilertag because the image is fairly large. I'm questioning the legitimacy of most of these carts (especially that Fire Emblem one), but the one in particular that caught my eye was Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games- which, as far as i can remember, wasn't on the GBA.

Anybody have any idea what game it could be? I noticed the Super Game logo at the bottom right, too. I have no idea if Super Game even made any GBA pirates, and while I tried to dig up any info about this I ended up with no dice.

Welp, as it turns out, it really is the Pocket Monster pirate on a GBA cart, running through PocketNES, I assume. It runs slower and choppier than on a normal NES, but works, so that's a thing. Plus it's got the debug/glitch/whatever from the original where you can just hold Start and skip through the entire level. I liked doing that since the platforming got a bit devious after the first two levels. LATER, NERDS

Spoiler: click to toggle

Joining the Pocket Monster cart is Pokemon: Frigo Returns, from a seller in Australia! Who is Frigo? Where is he returning from? The world may never know. But what I do know is that this cartridge feels like it's made from extremely cheap plastic. It's shoddy as heck and I love it.

The game itself is more or less just Ruby, with everything in Hoenn changed to have a pleasant snow-white palette which is also reflected in the battle scenes. Unfortunately, it kinda falls flat since there's some very poor tiling once you get further out, and it clashes hilariously with the many sandy beaches that Hoenn is known for. And the entirety of Rustboro City, for that matter. As for the eponymous Frigo, it is literally just Articuno with a terrible sprite. You get it in the second town right after you start the game and go from there.
Also included in this haul is Keitai Denjuu Telefang: Power Version and while that's not a pirated game I don't care, because I'm so glad to have found it in the first place. I seriously love that game and more people need to know about it. without finding the Diamond bootleg first, of course.

As long as it's not just Pocket Monster running on PocketNES, it's better than the GBA pirate I've got. :P

Edit: Bugger, I just realised that I got that back in August (sometime around then) from a pawn shop. I don't remember where I put the cart but I think it says Pokemon Gold Version on it.[/quote]Speaking of which, I think I literally just found a cart like that. I'm going to post some screenshots that came from the seller's post. Gonna put these in spolier tags because wow these are large images.
Spoiler: click to toggle

Check it out! It's literally the Pocket Monster game on the Famicom. I'm super psyched to get this.

And here's the cart in question. It's pretty beat up, from the looks of it. It's also completely missing a sticker. Should be in the mail soon, so I'll report back when I get it!

So I've been derping about on Ebay recently, and I've been finding some great things! I always check the GBA section to see if I can find any bootleg Pokemon games, because they always seem to pop up at one point or another, and I came across something great, and snagged it as soon as I could.

pardon the flash
While it's nothing special by any standards, I happened to come across a nice bootleg Emerald cart, on a solid grey cartridge as opposed to the traditional translucent green. The label is also hilariously worn out for some reason. Everything seems to work fine, although whenever I boot it up, I get a nice message saying "It is ok". No punctuation or anything, just "It is ok". It got even better after I checked to see if it could hold a save file, telling me- again, with no punctuation- "the save file is ok".

What could possibly be okay besides the save? It is a mystery. /:) I'm also getting a "Frigo Returns" cart on the way soon, so that'll be nice to check out. Who the hell is Frigo? Where is he returning from? THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW

Game Boy / Super Mario 4 STAND-ALONE

Oh wow, if that's the Super Mario 4 I'm thinking of, then you are quite lucky to find that in cartridge form! Kudos to you. :)

Yeah, I definitely knew that was the case with a lot of those ports, including this one. I was still trying to find a lead on who might have created, though. I might have found one- a fellow by the name of Enix Zae. I'll leave him a comment to see if I can find out a little bit more information about the hack itself, but it hasn't been updated since 2008, and even then there didn't seem to be a lot of changes.

In other news, this guy messed up one of the starter's backsprites and failed to use a proper color for the background, so the background blends in with the Pokemon's sprite. Lovely!

EDIT: Quick update- the hack ends at Mt. Moon, as there's a path of water and rocks blocking the exit to Route 4. Double lovely! Guess this is going on my shelf, never to use again. Just like the pirated LeafGreen. :y

Well, this isn't particularly interesting, but I've finally managed to snag a copy of one of the many bootleg Pokemon ports that have been circling around Ebay for years- this one in particular being ChaosBlack. I bought it knowing full well it was going to be of hilariously low quality, and OH LAWDY, does it show. Relatively okay sprite edits with barely edited icon sprites, but since this version of the rom dates back to as early as 2006, when good Pokemon hacking tools had not yet existed, the sprites were most likely added into the game with primitive methods (like UNLZ.GBA), as one particular Pokemon, a poorly edited Cloyster, has its backsprite as its front, and when you look at the backsprite, it's hilariously glitched, with the sprite of the last Pokemon you used showing up using its own palette. In addition, a lot of the edited Pokemon had not had their catch rates edited, which means I was finding things with a 60-90 catch rate (Cloyster, Muk, Fearow) in early-game areas where they really shouldn't be.

And SPEAKING of early-game areas, the towns and cities I've encountered so far have no names- they appear as a blank text box when you walk through the towns (Route 1 and 2 were like this as well). Every wild capture you make in the routes shows up as a "fateful encounter", but the town names and route names still show up on the town map. The routes themselves are also horribly edited (most likely again using primitive tools- Most likely EliteMap since AdvanceMap hadn't existed yet), with jumping ledges all over the place, and areas blocked off until Cut is available.

Overall, it's definitely bad. I knew it was going to be from the start, but I'll probably keep playing to see if I can find anything else. I'm also trying to do some research into that game to figure out who specifically made it. Might possibly have a lead, but I'm not entirely sure. Hoping to find Quartz, Perla, DarkCry, Lugia's Ocean, Naranja and ShinyGold at some point since I know they all exist as well. I've seen them before, but never could snag them quick enough.

Game Boy / Super Mario DX for GBA
« on: March 12, 2013, 01:41:15 AM »
Oh wow, this is hilarious. Yet another one of these games using the EXACT same engine has surfaced.

Also, speaking of these peeps who keep making the same crap, wasn't there an Ice Age game made by these people as well?

Well, this is mighty impressive, I must say. I still wish I could own a copy of Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong myself, but I don't think they'll be making any more copies anytime soon. But hey, you never know. :)
