1984-1992 / The truth behind "Namco Corporation"
« on: July 18, 2016, 06:52:21 AM »
Oh wow. I was always curious about the meaning of that "Fiver Firm" boot logo name since it sounded so strange(I saw it on your Neo Fuji blog), and now I see the answer with even more surprise.

"Fiver Firm" kinda makes sense as English name for 五合企業, but Namco! What were they thinking? So NTDEC was not the only case of bold Taiwanese company name...

1984-1992 / The JY Company

The name "JY Company" is actually mentioned in the staff credit screen of Tiny Toon Adventures 6, as "1997 J.Y. COMPANY ALL RIGHT RESERVED."

I guess this post is an effort of advertising a knockoff game. I remember some similar posts about One Piece game, which I highly doubt that it is actually produced under proper license.

Game Boy / GBA Unlicense Game (Number 9001-10000)
« on: January 15, 2016, 07:09:15 AM »
Most of those PC backport games are actually sold, but not as stand-alone ROM... For example, if you buy a copy of 'AIR Pocket ADVANCE', what you get is a converter soft that 'converts' the original PC game 'AIR' into a GBA ROM. I guess this is an effort to prevent getting sued by the original authors. Those converters are unofficial "doujin" softwares.

ROMs floating around the net are the end-result of using the converter leaked by someone, and in some cases you cannot complete the game with those ROMs since the converted game will ask you for authentication key to proceed. You have to use the converter with the original copy of the PC game again to get the authentication key.

Famicom/NES / Kira Kira Star Night
« on: January 04, 2016, 01:37:23 PM »
The official site doesn't seem to selling the game in cartridge form... and asking Google for キラキラスターナイト カートリッジ (Kira Kira Star Night Cartridge) tells you that some Japanese people made their own homebrew cartridge after the game came out.

Looking at the release party pictures on the site, I see that at least one official cart is made to show the game running on real Famicom, but the cart used in the picture looks different from the cart on the auction. It uses black cart shell rather than green one shown above.

So I guess the green cart above is a fan-made one, made in Japan rather than Taiwan/China. The cart label looks quite well-made and actually credits the original author RIKI, and I doubt that a random pirate outfit from Taiwan/China would do such a thing.

Edit: I suppose this is the origin of the cart above.

BootlegGames Wiki / Large amount of specific release date addition
« on: October 27, 2015, 06:50:17 AM »
So it looks like I have to consider those additions as false info for now, and I reverted one article left unfixed - Sonic the Hedgehog for SNES.

And I found something even more strange on that article - did JY Company published that hack??

The problem here is that only one article I can confirm that it is wrong is Sport Vii. Sonic 3D Blast 5's release year relies on my old memory and I don't have any actual proof that it came out before 1999 for now. For the rest of the articles, I don't know anything so I need some help to figure out what is actually going on here.

If someone can confirm that the anonymous user just tried to fool people with completely false info, I would revert back every articles edited by him/her immediately without posting here(I'm currently doing this for that kdma/RVVD guy's edits since they don't make sense at all). However, searching for Super Maruo's release info made me think that this user might actually know something, and just made miss for some products.

BootlegGames Wiki / Large amount of specific release date addition

An anonymous user using single IP(198.24.31.125) added very specific release date for bunch of games about 10 hours ago, and this is quite odd considering most unlicensed games having very unclear history.

Here's one example. This editor stated that Super Maruo was released in December 31, 1986 and I think this makes some sense since Japanese sources also states that Super Maruo was released in December 1986.

Meanwhile, this editor also stated that Sonic 3D Blast 5 for Game Boy was released in April 1, 1999 and this sound quite suspicious to me... As I remember, many multicarts sold in Korean market began to feature the disastrous Sonic game along with Super Mario 4, and that was around 1997-1998. I remember Game Boy Pocket being the newest model of Game Boy at that time, and even Game Boy Light(Japan-exclusive model which was released in April 1998) didn't exist at that time.

Another edit that sounds suspicious is article for Sports Vii. The editor says it is released in December 1st, 2007 but this seems to be false as there are many evidences that Vii was released earlier than that. A chinese article currently linked in BGW's Vii article is written in 10/13/2007, and google searching also shows some Japanese people mentioning its presence before December 2007.

Should I revert these edits? For the rest of the articles I can't figure out whether it is true or not, and I think very few people will be able to confirm it. The anonymous editor is currently blocked so I don't think we can have some talk with him/her about the source.

Sounds very similar to what you bought. So it seems like you need some tweaks to your common dumps to get them working on your portable DVD player...

Game Boy / Crayon Shin-Chan 6 GBC
« on: October 09, 2015, 05:18:31 AM »
Since the game is basically a graphic hack of Sanrio Carnival, so if you like that game(or at least if you like Columns and its variations) you may also enjoy the hack. I was disappointed since the previous Kureyon Shin games were mostly action-packed platformers and this game was not...

If a person who is able to dump Gameboy ROM gets a cart with that game, and if the cart is not heavily protected to prevent being dumped, dumping the ROM would be possible... Well this may sound dumb but I think the same applies to every other existing Gameboy games and no one can be so sure about this kind of thing.

I owned a multicart with this hack long time ago, and I found the game too disappointing to be the sixth entry in the Kureyon Shin games. (I liked 4th and 5th one quite much and I didn't know that this game was actually a bootleg at that time) I just traded the cart away and I've never seen a cart with this game from that.

Famicom/NES dumps / What is the program used for NES Pirated ROM hacks?
« on: October 05, 2015, 07:11:53 AM »
What you have made with YY-CHR cannot be called a real bootleg... it's just a common ROM hack pretending to be a bootleg game for now. You'd better not make an article about your games on BootlegGames Wiki anymore, just like what you did with your Super Garfield 3.

Every "bootleg games" we discuss here are actually sold in some physical, mass-produced form - usually as a cartridge form. Someone actually tried to make profit with stolen stuffs. Most ROM hacks are not the case, and it is very hard to do it with NES/Famicom ROM hack in these days, considering the diminished 8-bit gaming market.

Game Boy / Handheld Underground Post???
« on: October 01, 2015, 05:51:35 AM »
I think the post already says they are nothing more than unmodified existing games, just with wrong title in multicart menu...

Multicarts having wrong title in their game select menu is quite common, probably to make them look more attractive - so in this case, the cart is just pretending to be a huge collection of 10 Digimon games while it really has only three Digimon games and seven non-Digimon games.

oh and also i don't see the connection. But it turns out that super robot wars final vol ii. Might be the same as part 2 of the super robot wars x series then. And for blue destiny it is really just a title screen hack of that game.[/quote]I think you'd better bring some actual proofs when you are talking about undiscovered things so confidently. I remember someone being banned for this kind of activity... What you said even doesn't seem to match up with what that comment on nesbbs.

Pirated Work / SKOB Sound Collection - Full Metal Warfare

Listen at Youtube

All the musics from Super Robot Wars F-FINAL Vol.1 and Super Robot Wars IMPACT(I used "Gangdan Wuyu II" re-release by Li Cheng for IMPACT but I doubt that Li Cheng bothered to modify the original game's music...). F-FINAL has only 6 tracks while IMPACT having whopping 21 tracks.

F-FINAL's musics are closely rivaled by that of Makon Soft musics, but developers at SKOB somehow improved their skills in IMPACT so give them a try. It's a shame that they kept that bad sound driver...
