Also, localization suggestion in the extremely small chance that the game ever gets translated at all: why not name the game (and the creatures) "star shifters"? I say this because I still believe that the Chinese name was taken from the Chinese translation of "time shifters"/"時空モンスター" from a certain forgotten cartoon show that once aired on TV Tokyo/Fox Network/Chinese Television System that I mentioned earlier, so it might make sense.

So I made two Imgur albums on the Shi Kong Xing Shou dex just for the heck of it. The reason I made two albums is because Imgur's upload-all-at-once limit is two short of the complete dex, so I decided to split it into an even 76 pictures per album. The albums include the original Traditional Chinese text, as well as conversions to Simplified Chinese characters and pinyin. This is so that Mandarin-speaking/reading people from all areas (China, Taiwan, overseas, etc.) can understand regardless of which writing system they are used to. Though this time I've decided not to include English/Engrish translations with them (maybe later)

This actually seems the most effective way of viewing the descriptions and the pictures all at once. Hope you enjoy.

This thread has been dead for a while, so I decided it was appropriate to revive it with this.

Are you talking about errors transcribing the Chinese from the original game to plaintext? I did try to double and even triple check my work, try to draw the hanzi as close as I can on Chinese-drawing tools like Nciku/Line Dictionary, all using a drawing tablet, and if I'm unsure about a particular hanzi (doesn't help that the game is in Traditional with its characters crammed into a 16x16 space. If this was a Simplified Chinese game, then I'd be whistling a different tune here), then I take it to Wiktionary, and in certain cases even ask some people from a Mandarin-learning IRC, and sometimes even going as far as to asking a few native Chinese/Taiwanese chat friends who do know the Traditional writing system if anything is right or wrong. Sometimes I even see some typos that came from the original game itself and not of my error, so in the case of that, I keep the original entry but also note some possible "corrections" to those typos on the side. I did do my research in more ways than one when it comes to converting the entries from text sprites in an 8-bit game to plaintext as 100% correct as possible, but do note any inaccuracies that I might have written on those notes, such as incorrect/skipped/extra hanzi that do not match up with the actual game, although I made my efforts to try and avoid those types of things. If you want to note any corrections but cannot type actual Chinese, such hanzi-drawing tools are actually pretty useful for that. Trust me, up until my efforts in transcription, the descriptions were literally nigh-ungoogleable/unbaiduable to even people who know Chinese, so I wanted to make a contribution at least.

If you are talking about any English-language errors, then yeah, of course it'll have mistakes all over. The Chinese-to-English "translation" really sucks, I admit that, and I won't even sugarcoat it, which is why I want it to be "refined" to begin with. I am really struggling with the Chinese language, and while a percentage of the translations come from genuine knowledge of a hanzi's translation or two, most of it was done by largely looking things up online. To be honest, I just wanted to hold people over by giving them an "idea" and "feel" on what the Chinese descriptions might be like in English until a "proper" translation can be done. I really hope that in the future, I know enough accurate Chinese words and syntax to do proper translations to English with little to no aid.

Good to see this topic still active even after all this time.
Perhaps I can use that save state and make a full sprite rip of the SKXS capturable beasts in full glorious color.

Also since it's relevant, I might as well post this.

Yeah. Hopefully I didn't use any "wrong words" in my translations (I tried my best to go with what's right, but with one Chinese word sometimes having two or more English meanings, it can be tough).

Perhaps you can put the refined translations in a separate file as well as the updated strategy guide?

The comic is a thought, at least. No solid plans on that. Not even if it'll be drawn by me or someone else who's a very close acquaintance. I don't even have any tentative release dates or English names. I might draw a few "star beasts" as standalone pictures at the very least.

But in the meantime, if there is someone out there who is fluent in Chinese and willing to refine my rough translations to something that actually flows well and doesn't sound like an Engrish bootleg, then by all means they are free to do so. *wink wink*

Turns out, my BGB emulator glitches out and counts every single monster as "seen". So what that means is that I took advantage of that opportunity to finish up the dex entries in so little time.

After so much time, my transcription and very Duwang-tier rough translation of Shi Kong Xing Shou's "Pokedex" is finally complete.

A downloadable .RTF file with pictures might come later this weekend. And maybe another separate version with Simplified Chinese and Zhuyin. And maybe a slightly updated version of the Shui Hu Shen Shou dex entries notes.

Oh, and also I might pen an unofficial comic adaptation of the story, using the (updated?) strategy guide by Sink Penol as a base. Maybe I will draw it alone. Maybe I will collab with someone (and pay them to do so) with me doing the sketched storyboards and writing. Maybe it won't happen at all and it's yet another overambitious project and I want to blow up the mooooooon.... But who knows? It's a thought, at least.

Well, with that, I'm off. Might check this thread later.

Funny thing, I was also looking at these videos when I was trying to go through the games.

So, I've been meaning to ask for a while, but does anyone have any savestates for SKXS where all the monsters are collected? Or at least any VBA/Gameshark/whatever cheat codes I can input in an emulator to have all 152 entries filled up as "collected" or at least "seen"? I'm no good at making cheats myself. It'd make this transcription/translation journey a whole lot easier if I had either of those. If not, then I guess I will settle for just slogging through the entire game manually.

Aye, I just used an online tool to copy, paste, and convert my text in. Nothing too difficult. And as for those names, well, I already knew that as I used this Wikipedia article (which was also where I pulled the "real" name translations from) as well as its Chinese Wikipedia equivalent for guidance when I was doing my transcriptions. And I think the reason for some of the "real names" being used for some mons is that

And I dunno, that Chinese artist does strange things, I guess. He mainly draws Pokemon like this, but he does other things and original characters too.

Yeah.

In other news, I have been thinking about adding Zhuyin/Bopomofo (ㄓㄨˋ ㄧㄣ ㄈㄨˊ ㄏㄠˋ) and Simplified Chinese (简化字) to both games' transcription notes. It's only a matter of an easy conversion using tools. I bring this up because there could potentially be Chinese-speaking people in both China and Taiwan reading the notes, and I want to bridge any communication barriers since both countries (despite using practically the same language) have highly different (in terms of "commonly used depending on the country") ways of both writing and transliterating things. What do you think? Should I do it?

Currently, my notes only use Traditional Chinese (the default writing system for both games) and pinyin (mainly for English speakers to understand how it's pronounced, but used mainly in China too). It'd be very interesting to add, but I don't know...

Awesome, your sudden comeback was unexpected indeed. I thought you were gone forever. And you're going to update the old strategy guide? Great!

Anyway, after months, I...still haven't finished transcribing every Shi Kong Xing Shou dex entry yet. In fact, I have been taking a break for the sake of marathoning Flint the Time Detective my sanity. But you know what, maybe I will get to the game and catch/transcribe even more monsters today/this week. And maybe update the old SHSS Pastebin for some additions/slight corrections with the side notes (don't worry, as far as I can tell, all my transcriptions of the original Chinese entries are hanzi-for-hanzi accurate, but the English translations need to be less DUWANG-y).

Game Boy / Jungletac GBA ROMs Found

So I tried out Tiger Rescue, and...

that thing is basically a GBA version of the Aero Fighters game formula. Same planes, powerups and "GAME OVER" fonts and all. Now all it needs is dolphins speaking Engrish to us about frying over jungles, and we're good. If only Video System didn't go bankrupt in the early 2000s, maybe we would have gotten a legit port. But ah well, Jungletac did the job for us.

Also, I might be playing these games and recording them for some high score runs. I might even aim for the maximum possible score on the more puzzle-oriented ones.

Mega Drive/Genesis / Bomboy level layout weirdness

OK, so I got a camera and my Genesis emulator portable, and got ready to take pictures, but as it turns out, the portable generated a different level than last time I turned it on. I reset the portable, went through the main and SD card menus again, and booted up Bomboy yet again, and it generated yet another different level. Took a picture of that. Then reset, went through menus, loaded Bomboy, generated different level, and took a picture yet again. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Feel free to add these screenshots to the first post if you like.

(keep in mind that the player always starts on the very first tile, I just moved my player character to the right on the second screenshot)

So, the AtGames Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable randomly generates a completely different level for Bomboy upon each bootup, unlike other emulators. And yes, it does that even when you input passwords for different levels. Huh. I wonder if the original intention of the programmers was to "make each playing experience different" by having randomly generated levels upon each time the Genesis is powered on. We also have to consider the back of the Bomboy box with screenshots of the same plain layouts (probably test levels), but different textures.

And yes, I checked, the demo level is still the same as the one in the screenshot.

I do have to give Bomboy credit, though, for practically making a procedurally-generated game combined with a (main mode) Bomberman experience (be it intentionally or not), which does sound like a lot of fun, really, and something that former official Bomberman owner Hudson Soft (and current owner Konami) had yet to provide (to current knowledge).

(EDIT: OK, so soft-resetting does give you different levels. Fusion still gives diagonal levels, but at least they're different diagonal levels each time. Hmmm.... could it be that Bomboy in its entirety relies on procedural generation without even any pre-made levels? And its effects are different for each emulator?)

Yeah, I noticed that when I loaded up Bomboy on my AtGames Sega Genesis 80-in-1 Portable, which I thought was strange seeing as it loaded up "diagonal levels" on Fusion, while the AtGames portable didn't. Then I looked at that blog post about complaining about those "diagonal levels" and got even more suspicious. Now it turns out it wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me or the spotty emulation on AtGames' emulator's part.

I wonder which set of levels load up on the original cartridge on real Sega Genesis (maybe it loads up different levels based on the model used, official or no, perhaps even the Dynacom Megavision, which Bomboy was once packed in with).

Yet another bootleg mystery came up thanks to someone looking at Lunatic Obscurity blogging.

EDIT: And none of the levels in the screenshots of the first post match up what shows up on my portable. Ah well, I'll take photos of that level later this weekend, as I'm at somewhere right now.

Um, maybe when Kurosawa said he used a Chinese man to help with the Chinese subtitles, he meant something along the lines of "that Chinese man gave answers whenever I asked him with help on a particular hanzi/word or some grammar things, which is not a lot, otherwise I did the bulk of the Japanese-Chinese translation myself". Or maybe it was a Chinese student who wasn't 100% fluent with Japanese at the time.

When I was working on transcribing and giving rough translations of Shui Hu Shen Shou's "Pokedex" entries, I sometimes had a Chinese chat friend help me with some hanzi/words I was having some trouble with whenever I can. But it was only a few times, he was still learning English even after a few years, he was the type to sometimes use Chinese words along with his English if he did not know what a particular word meant. And even then my translation efforts were a bit Engrish-y (but at least the original Chinese transcription was accurate). So maybe something similar to my experiences happened with Hong Kong 97's translations.
