Game Boy dumps / Re: Tabor's Dumps
« on: October 12, 2025, 01:10:51 PM »
This is an RPG called(?) Final Fantasy: Unlimited Saga. There's already a dump available on the Internet Archive but I thought I'd do my own since I wanted my own copy anyhow. I did compare them and they aren't exactly the same. What has changed? As usual, no idea. The wiki does mention Sintax listing an English copy on their website so it *possibly* exists, but as far as I know nothing has turned up yet sadly. Thankfully the Chinese characters are all big and clear, making it easier to translate using a phone.

I do plan on playing this as it doesn't seem that bad so far. One random thing I did note is that despite being a Sintax release, there is no intro logo at all, it just boots straight into the opening scene (which you can't skip by the way :l).

Developer: ???
Publisher: Sintax

Zui Zhong Huan Xiang: Wu Jin Sha Jia (最终幻想-無盡沙加)

The English version (Crystal Age) also had a listing on one of Sintax's Alibaba pages, meaning they did attempt to sell it at one point. As for the common dump of this game, my understanding is that is an early build that got leaked. Sky League had access to someone at Sintax who shared a few protos. This, to my knowledge, is the first time the final version has been dumped

Edit: And it was developed in-house. Could've started development under BBD I guess, but Sintax bought them out, so the distinction between the two isn't that important

Not sure if people here saw the news, but the English version for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon by Gowin has been preserved and posted to hhug. Credit goes to yy小龙虾 and dhx for this one https://hhug.me/?post=117

You're welcome. Most of the credit goes to taizou and JS7457 for figuring out how to emulate it. I just got lucky and found a cart a long time ago

I remember sharing pictures/listings for that on the BGC Discord a while ago. It is a UM6578 game and cannot be dumped with standard famicom dumping methods.  There are people here with contacts that can help with that if you wind up acquiring one though. It's worth noting that the Timetop game it is a variant of is also undumped. Most of their UM6578 carts are

That seller did not upload a picture of the title screen. What you see is the splash screen that appears before each stage, which looks normal to me. It's worth mentioning that taizou dumped this game from a Singaporean cart that has the same design as that one

Last year a version of Zook Hero 3 dumped by dzd and yy小龙虾 was posted to hhug. That ROM was sourced from a cart from Mainland China and had its copy protection hacked out. Recently I obtained a Taiwanese cart, so here is the original unmodified ROM for that. Only emulators that can run unmodified Sintax games will work with this

Game Boy / Re: Another Theory (Ka Sheng - NGCA)

I've seen stuff by PR Trans make it onto pirate carts (Pikachu Land is by them, and sometimes credtis them even on pirate carts). Not sure about unmodified stuff from them though. I'd say that I don't remember stuff on the matter clearly enough that I'd advise putting it on the wiki. Also gotta factor in that these translations went through multiple revisions

For reference there are a few different types of IDs that Ka Sheng multis are known to use on Gameboy multis. Examples include IDs that start with NT, JU, CY, UA, CA, US, and a couple other obscure ones that are almost never used. UA, NT, and CY I would say are the most common. US is also common, but those tend to not have anything good on them

Also, they often (but not always) use translucent plastic, sometimes with glitter

None of the carts in this thread look like Ka Sheng carts. The game has multiple publishers

A lot of the members of BGC spend more time on the discord server than the forums. He never stopped being active over there. If you saw that document I posted on 2024 highlights for BGC, his name pops up a few times for some pretty cool discoveries he helped make

Pirate Talk / 2024 Highlights for BGC Discoveries (and Happy New Year)
« on: January 29, 2025, 02:41:53 AM »
Something I wanted to make for a long time was a yearly thread going over highlights for cool discoveries when it came to topics covered on BGC. Unfortunately I missed my mark of releasing this on the solar new year, so I decided to post it on the lunar new year instead. Activity here has balanced more towards the Discord server as of late, so just being active on the forums is no longer as effective for staying up to date on this stuff, and I felt that a highlights thread could help fix that

I tried to come up with as many interesting topics as I could, but I was not writing them down as the year went on, so I most likely forgot some. Since I wanted to include lots of pictures and links, I wound up formatting this as a PDF file, but I do encourage anyone reading to join in on the discussion on any discoveries or developments from 2024 (not just the ones on my list) they think are interesting

I've been pretty in the weeds when it comes to this stuff, and I am admittedly not the most elegant writer, so sorry in advance if this a weird read. I included some links that I think will be useful, and also recommend checking BGW if you wish to learn more on some of these

Game Boy dumps / A-Force Prototype
« on: January 03, 2025, 09:24:59 PM »
This is my favorite thing I've gotten to share here so far. It's a ROM dump of a prototype copy of A-Force by Sachen I found a few months back. Technically this is the Mega Duck version, but Mega Duck games are mostly the same as Gameboy games at a programming level. I shipped it out to Sean Riddle who was able to dump it (he redumped a few times to make sure it is a good dump) and gave me some info on his findings:

"The EPROM is connected directly to the cart data bus D0-D7 and the cart address bus A0-A14.  Chip enable is connected to cart A15, so the EPROM outputs are tri-stated for addresses $8000-$FFFF.  Output enable is connected to /RD.  EPROM A15 is connected to the MC14174B HEX Type D Flip Flop’s output 0.  The flip flop’s input 0 is connected to data bus D0, and the clock input is tied low and connected via a diode OR gate to /WR and A14.  So writes with A14 low will latch data bit 0 for use as EPROM A15.  The flip flop’s /reset signal is connected to the cart’s /RST pad so that the game starts up in bank 0.  The other 5 flip flops are unused.

This 32K bank switching is different from the 16K bank switching used in the production carts.  That likely explains why large blocks of code have been shuffled around."

Interestingly the shell for the cart appears to use the design for Mega Duck carts that is seen in old advertisements (light colored plastic and slants on the sides of the cart)
