Title: Retron 5
Post by: codeman38 on March 24, 2013, 12:13:20 PM
So, for those who haven't heard... Hyperkin, the company that markets a whole bunch of Famiclones, has announced a new system called the Retron 5 that's coming out this summer. Which is compatible with 60-pin Famicom, 72-pin NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES/SFC, GBC, and GBA cartridges.

Here's the video of the official announcement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OcNy7t17LA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OcNy7t17LA)

I'm very curious as to how their system-on-a-chip handles GB stuff, now! Especially the unlicensed games, which tend to be finicky even on official systems...

Holy shit, I want one so bad. :O Even though I have the consoles already, it looks really interesting.

I'd consider buying one if I didn't already own all of the systems. (apart from the NES, but I could get an adapter for that) It definitely sounds like an effective way at reducing the amount of space you'd use playing these systems but I'm always skeptical on the emulation. (mostly thanks to the arseholes at TatGames)

From what I've seen of the previous Retron systems, they're much better than Atgames' stuff--at least the sound channels all play in the same key. Sound emulation still isn't perfect, though; the NES noise channel is unusually loud on the Retron3. (It's really noticeable with Solstice, which uses the noise channel for metallic-sounding percussion...)

Though they did say that they've revamped the audio emulation for the Retron5, so...who knows.

Well, they said they've improved the emulation, so I'm guessing it'll make games a lot more playable then on their other stuff.

if the GBC side is decent (and supports unlicensed games) I might just pick this up. Hopefully its not just software emulation.
...though having seen the presentation it sure as hell sounds like software emulation. If they managed to get all those features working on a hardware clone its damn impressive.

But on the bright side: if it's software emulation, there's probably some way to hack into the firmware and use it to dump ROMs. :-D

As long as it's no DS Slot-2 hardware clone, then MAYBE it'll be possible to get some of those Sintax craps dumped. (Maybe some V.Fame GBA stuff too! Besides, it probably isn't too hard to fix a full proper dump of those, the ROM start offset's the same in Rury and Sapphire.)
