Title: Nongoodnes
Post by: Awesome Panda on August 18, 2011, 12:53:35 PM
I figured it's probably best to make a whole topic about this, seeing as it gets updated every now and then.

Anyway, Kamming recently posted the latest version of it (http://hi.baidu.com/kamming/blog/item/6a6b1b9bfb18adafc9eaf4fa.html). Out of the lot, I'll just list a few of the more interesting ones (as most of them are translations or homebrew hacks):

Beat n Box
Fire Dragon (the original version)
Ko Ko Eo Deu Ben Ce (Korean version of Buzz and Waldog)
Master Fighter VI
Night Pearl
Powerful 255-in-1 (complete with Arnold Schwarzenegger for no apparent reason. Doesn't seem to have "Tetris III" though)
Street Fighter X Turbo 40
World Heroes 2 Pro (With the options menu)

Also funny is that my hack of Donkey Kong Country 4 is there, incorrectly listed as 2-in-1 Donkey Kong + Jungle Book (Unl).

I'm surprised they forgot to include your dump of "Mowing" :P I can't seem to download from that site though :(

Hey awesome, i'm downloading it now. :D

one random thing I just realised- "Kiddy Sun in Fantasia" is in there, which I've seen before and I assumed was a pirate hack of Adventure Island, but it's copyrighted to Eratech and Hudson had a HK and Taiwan joint venture (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Hudson-Era_HK) called HuERA, so maybe its actually a licensed hack?

Oh wait, the 255-in-1 does have Tetris III. Unfortunately, it's just Pyramid, as if anyone would want to play that. <_<

Edit: Another oddity with it is that the menu is split up into several seperate PRG banks. Not only does it needlessly waste space in the ROM, it makes no sense. O_o

I've downloaded the compilation, and I have to say that Beat n' Box is a weird one. Any other interesting new pirate games amongst them though?

EDIT: I have spotted a few more new pirate games myself actually... these are JP Ronny, Wonder Rabbit, Difference, Metro Mania and War In The Gulf.

I have no idea who the "YNC" that developed Beat 'n Box is, but they've got to be somehow related to Open Corp. The font used on the score screen has been used in a number of games by Open, and the sound driver is theirs (erm, well, technically Konami's...) as well.

Another random observation: the version of "Long Long Ago" in "Music Box (C)" (it's the third tune down) is the exact same one used in that Penalty Kick game that maxzhou88 helped develop.

Edit: Also, I'm pretty much certain that Music Box is by Inventor. Because the word "INVENT" is plastered across one of the backgrounds.

Like Street Dance, it has the same fire-breathing bloke on the menu and the songs are repeated for no apparent reason. That, and both rip off existing characters for no apparent reason.

Another thing: wow, those are horrible renditions of all five songs on Beat 'n Box.

For those who can't manage to recognize them even with the song titles-- which is quite understandable, as they barely sound like the originals at all save for a few notes here and there:

Take On Me - A-Ha
California Dreamin' - The Mamas and the Papas
Runaway - Del Shannon
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds

More random trivia! Koko Adventure (I can't be bothered with the Korean phonetic spelling, heh) has a hidden logo for "Buzz & Spinner". Guess that's what they were going to call Suzi in the US before they replaced her with Waldog. They apparently were already planning on selling it to Innovation in the US at this point, as there's a hidden copyright notice in that same part of the CHR ROM.

(And yes, the Korean version did come first. Proof? If you disable the infinite-lives feature on Buzz & Waldog with a Game Genie code, Waldog's name is revealed to actually be Suzi on the game-over screen!)

What I find kind of odd is that both versions of the game have both the English and Korean titles in the ROM. (Well, the Korean version has the English title Buzz & Spinner but whatever)

BTW, is it just me or did 8-bit Korean games gradually decrease in quality from 1993 onwards?

I guess the more talented programmers figured that the Comboy (Famicom) and such was becoming obsolete at the time and figured it was a waste programming for it.

Funny, I use NEStopia myself and all of the ones I tried seem to work apart from the FDS conversion of Zanac. I suppose CaH4e3's FCEU mod is probably the best thing for these ROMs.

OK yeah I think I think it's just that a good amount of the games just don't work. I also found that a good amount of times they have the same games on the multiple times on the cart under different names. Like Mario 3 and Mario Bros 4 are the same as Mario Bros 1 except you cannot move at all. Also there's a Popeye game on it, is that their own creation?

Also thx for the link. :D

When you download that zip file, If a folder called 'special' is in there, delete it immediately.. AVG detected a threat from some "Tabula Rosa II" thing inside the file or something. Didn't really seem to do anything, but I'd recommend deleting it nonetheless, just as a warning.

Im not sure if it really is anything bad, my antivirus didn't pick up anything. I tried it on VirusTotal and a few seem to detect it as something suspicious based on the way it's packaged, but it just seems to be an Arabic hack of Captain Tsubasa bundled with an Arabic version of VirtuaNES. But, hell, run it at your own risk.

Sorry, if my English sucks =)
Having downloaded last set nongoodnes, I have noticed a cock-a-hoop. Names of files of the majority of files not under standard GoodXXX and translates, hacks and games are located chaotically in one folder. I have decided to rename all files under standard GoodXXX and to scatter the dumps on folders for their more convenient use: Games, Hacks, Multigames, Others, PDs, Translates, Unlicensed. After I plan to upload the corrected set in the Internet and to notify the author that the subsequent updatings of a set were under the standards stated by me. I think, so all it will be more convenient)

If you want to then I would like that. ;)[/quote]Me too  :)

Also, I've downloaded a pack with several new dumps of SNT games, but they're in 7-Zip format and the pack itself is 61MB.

Bump!  Taizo is correct about Kiddy Sun:

HuEra and Era Tech are owned by the same company, Kiddy Sun is a licensed release folks.

Seems a bit weird that they'd make an alternate version of an existing game for the Taiwanese market, but then given the amount of games that went through unnecessary localisation in North America it shouldn't be too surprising. I imagine most people there still played the Japanese version though considering what piracy was like there.
