Title: Shi Kong Xing Shou - Galactic Beasts/Space Time Star Beast
Post by: Sink Penol on August 14, 2011, 09:32:07 AM
Finally. Introducing this game in PGC Forum! (Also, this is my first post.)

(Note : this one is quoted from Sir Brydo's forum( http://s1.zetaboards.com/The_RX_Community/index/ (http://s1.zetaboards.com/The_RX_Community/index/) ), which I posted there before.)
Introduced by Qiezei and dumped by Sir Taizou, This Pokemon-esque, unlicensed Taiwanese Gameboy RPG rocks. You can download this game's rom at Sir Taizou's Hompage : http://fuji.drillspirits.net/?post=86 (http://fuji.drillspirits.net/?post=86)

What make me good :
 - Nice music, as always Vast Fame did.
 - Character graphics were not bad. And their characteristic is clear.
 - Average Story and nice events.
Spoiler: click to toggle

 - Easy. You can buy powerful items later on.
What make me awful :
 - Plagiarized sprites, of course! Noy only Pokemon, but also Telefang, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children, and Mega Man series. :angry2:
 - Bad type association(?). Dark wins Fight!
 - So many 'useless' tidles in dialogue.
 - Bugs. Sometimes Roar makes game crash and wipes save file as well. Do not use roar while in boss battles.

Koreans learn Chineses letters(aka Hanja in Korean, Kanji in Japan) as well, so I could translate some of game scripts and beast names.
As Sir Taizou said, its title is directly tranlated as 'Space-Time Star Beast'. But I retranslated title as : "Galactic Beasts."

Firstly the protagonist crew :
(Note : They can't be spoliers since they're introduced in intro.)
 - 1st(Protagonist) : Ballot
 - 2th(Robot boy) : Buck
 - 3rd(Green-dressed lady) : Nina
 - 4th(Brown-clothed man): Claude
 - 5th(Blue-dressed girld) : Helen(Originally her name means 'Great Sea'. But since names are based on pronounciation, so I have to find similiar-pronounced.)
 - 6th(Flute Player) : Lante
 - 7th(Scientist) : Newton(Originally his name is translated as 'Rand' or else, but I don't think this is appreciable.)
 - Last(Painter) : Mitt

And their partner Beasts :
(Note : Same as above.)
 - 1st : Bladeberus(Direct : Blue-Souled Dog)
Despite its appearance, it uses sword-based attacks a lot.
 - 2nd : Beattro(Direct : Mechnical Bird)
Why its name is beattro? Since its sprite is from Mega Man's support robot, Beat.
 - 3rd : Electreep(Direct : Little Lamb)
 - 4rd : Chromanix(Direct : Volcanic Bird)
 - 5th : Merlith(Direct : Mer)
Name's origin is 'mer' + 'lilith'.
 - 6th : Muserode(Direct : Musical Soul)
 - 7th : Signaliton(Direct : Time-Space Mech)
 - 8th : Drawvile(Direct : Paint Fairy)

P. S. It seems that you're good at Chinese, sir Taizou. Would you help correcting grammar errors of my translations?

Hey, welcome!  I'm sure your walkthrough will garner some interest over here.  :)  Are you still going to update over at the RX Community or is the main focus going to be here?

Oh, note to others - This game is fully playble.

Would you help correcting grammar errors of my translations?
Actually I'm not - I just translate simple things with dictionaries and stuff but I don't know much about Chinese grammar at all. Anything substantial translated from Chinese on my site was probably done by Barver. :D

Anyway, welcome to the forums! glad to hear people are enjoying Shi Kong. I wish I knew Game Boy ASM then i could maybe translate the damn thing and fix the bugs.

I wish I knew Game Boy ASM then i could maybe translate the damn thing and fix the bugs.
Not to mention the balancing stuff.  When you have enemies that can poison put to sleep, and paralyze you all at once with 100% accuracy, that tends to be a huge problem.  Same goes for the one-hit kill stuff.

Yeah true. Stuff like that makes you appreciate why the real Pokemon spent like 5 years in development.

Playthrough videos :
 * Sir Taizou(ROM) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIDkKDYVVs0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIDkKDYVVs0)
 * Qiezei(Undumped)
 - Part 1 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhHGAuXO19U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhHGAuXO19U)
 - Part 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUG-tZw8-Ik (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUG-tZw8-Ik)
 * Sir Brydo(ROM) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcA3STavuFU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcA3STavuFU)

The glitches I found :
 * Using roar while in boss battles will make the game crash.
 * While using Beast depositing system, when you have 5 or more Beast in box, game will make terrible graphic glitch if Beasts are less than 5 - Like below. Game won't crash, but you have to wait for a while to play.
 * Sometimes game will crash suddenly, and the save file wipes out. This is the worst glitch.
 * Status-effecting move will show its active graphics even it's missed. like this.
Use status-effecting move -> Success -> The opponent will remove its status in no time.

EDIT : New things.
 * Beasts' types : Fight, Light, Shadow, Fire, Water, Wood, Earth
 * Blaziken's Beast sprite sheet(some of them are noncolored)
Spoiler: click to toggle

P. S. I wonder why This and Digimon Sapphire have no entry in Bootleg Games Wiki. But I'm afraid of making a page because I'm not so good at English... due to inappropriate preps.

Yes! Someone made a fascinating interest in SKXS! Here's blog post of him : http://superjustintheblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/shi-kong-xing-shou-one-of-few-chinese.html (http://superjustintheblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/shi-kong-xing-shou-one-of-few-chinese.html)

But he knows something wrong... Level limit is NOT 70. In my walkthough in RX Community, I just fixed my own max level as 70 because 70 was enough to defeat final boss. Still, I dunno what is the maximum level limit....

All we need now is the GBS rip of this game's soundtrack. I want it so badly! D:

Got bored, fiddled around with things, and ripped this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17399537/stuff/Shi%20Kong%20Xing%20Shou.gbs (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17399537/stuff/Shi%20Kong%20Xing%20Shou.gbs)
I'm unsure if it's complete though, seeing as I haven't played through the whole thing.
(The second song and a "Square" drum are copy-pasted a lot, which could either be filler or an error on my part.)
Title: Shi Kong Xing Shou - Galactic Beasts/Space Time Star Beast
Post by: Pepper-98 on February 01, 2012, 06:34:15 PM
Fuck.  YEAH!

As far as completion, that would be something Sink would know, as he played through the game.  If it is complete, then I am literally one track away from finishing the soundtrack, sans some alt tracks I want to record (haven't recorded the third track yet, but I'm at a part that plays the song so I could do it whenever I feel like it).

EDIT: Oh yeah, I noticed it's missing the first battle theme (which is really catchy) and the song that plays during the meteor shower cutscene early in the game.  I don't remember off-hand if there's anything else missing.

Would you be interested in tackling GBS rips for other VFame titles, out of curiosity? No immediate need, but I'd love to see rips for Shui Hu Shen Shou (a.k.a., the 'Shawu Story' that involves animals) and Crazy Richman 2.

Edited to add: Definitely at least one missing tune in the Shi Kong rip: the third town theme. (That one runs through my head at random times. It's that much of an earworm.)

Edit #2: As a reference, you can use Qiezei's line-in recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbNXRjcEo6M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbNXRjcEo6M) The 3rd town is at 22:38.

I've got scans of the Shi Kong Xing Shou guidebook here (http://postimage.org/gallery/srfoat4/207b911e/). I scanned the Sheng Shou Wu Yu half of the book too (http://postimage.org/gallery/c1z5zke/19892903/).

I also scanned in the guidebook for Shui Hu Shen Shou as well (http://postimage.org/gallery/78zdggc/92579196/).

I did these a few weeks ago. I actually have Qiezei to thank for providing the name of the Taiwanese proxy Taiwan Shopaholic in his blog, which I used to get the guidebooks. Thanks Qiezei!

There are cheat codes in the strategy guides!

Shi Kong Xing Shou and Sheng Shou Wu Yu: http://postimage.org/image/r7axchqkt/ (http://postimage.org/image/r7axchqkt/)
Shui Hu Shen Shou: http://postimage.org/image/k3dp06ikb/ (http://postimage.org/image/k3dp06ikb/)

These are all to be entered at the title screen, before selecting New Game or Continue.

Unfortunately, they only work for starting a new game, not continuing an old one. But nonetheless...cheat codes! (And 99,999 gold can totally be useful...)

For those who can't read the arrow directions in Chinese:
上 = up
下 = down
左 = left
右 = right

Hey everyone. I just thought I'd drop in and show off a few things related to SKXS and SHSS.

1st to 8th rows: Main Characters
9th row: Major supporting cast, includes the villains.
10th row: Mugshots that are used on more than one character (some may belong in the ninth row)

Yep! More mugshots, now with just about all of the supporting cast. I didn't bother with the beasts since they're just cropped from their full sprites used in battles, though I do remember Ballot's beast looking in a different direction in it's mugshot.

1st row: Yan Long
2nd row: Chen Hu (Rival)
3rd row: Yan's partners that transform into monsters, in the order they are acquired, not met the first time.
4th row: The characters fought in the towers, or "Tower Leaders".
5th row: Supporting cast
6th row: mugshots used on more than one character.

Incomplete rip of the mugs from Shui Hu Shen Shou up to the part where you fight your rival in the desert (yes, I got that far without using a guide). I am going to say this once. That face Yan Long somehow pulls off where his eyes invert colors scares the living crap out of me. :faint:

If anyone wants to add to/complete either of the mugshot sheets, I'd appreciate the help.

And to top it all off, rips of Yan from the intro.

Sweet!  I know Nina has one or two different mugshots during her minigame, but Ballot's are the same in his (just in less color).  I can post both up for completion's sake is you want.

Well if you want to post them, you're entitled to do so.

Another nod about Shui Hu Shen Shou; Looking through the scans of the guide, I found out that the battle with Chen Hu I mentioned was somewhere in Chapter 3, shown on Page 97. Further inspection reveal that some of the side characters, other than Yan Long, have more than one mugshot (May most likely be false), and also from the guide's screen caps, here are the mugshots I have yet to rip:

*Character with eyes closed and holding a blade over it's mouth. (Page 117)
*Two different characters with almost identical faces (Pages 118 and 119)
*Character with dark hair; met in a forest (Page 122)
*A person with a very drowsy face (Page 126)
*Two characters, one with large eyebrows and chin (is that supposed to be a beard?) and another with a mischievous face. (Page 135)
*A character with a large visor (Page 136)
*Two here, A character similar to the "mischievous" guy mentioned two bullets before, and a man with a mustache and a beard. (Page 138)

I'm sure there's others, but I don't have much desire to play SHSS at the moment. Though I do find it a tad bit more interesting than SKXS, as it's not as broken, takes on chinese mythology (my lust for asian culture may help this), and is the more challenging of the two games, thanks to Game Overs being present (including ones caused by stupid cutscenes like the timed desert area where you have to race to save a guy before he's killed, ending your game.

I'm sure one of those codes in SHSS is a infinite HP or instant max level cheat. Maybe it'd save the time spent leveling up my monsters and the only things I'd have to do is just do the things that advance the plot.

EDIT: And here is stuff about Shi Kong Xing Shou.

You are correct about a possibility of saving/resurrecting Mitt at the game's climax, as it shows him alive and well in Ballot's home with another person (can't be Ballot or his father, as they are stuck in the middle of the desert). I think it's only a new scene that follows the one with Nina and Claude, which is normally skipped in a casual playthrough.

I am unsure of what the unlock conditions are, but if it just so happens to be "catch every obtainable beast in the game and own seen data of uncatchable beasts", it'd have to be done on a clean save in a single sitting, without powering off or resetting, as doing this scrambles up the "Dex" data, removing monsters.

Another EDIT: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...

I did mention back at the R.I.P. RX Community thread that the walkthrough was gone before it got cleaned up.  I have the walkthrough saved on my computer in two MS Word files, though I don't know if the spoiler tagged stuff will show in it (I forgot to copy the content itself rather than the spoiler for some early parts.)  They're like 178MB altogether, but I have them if anybody wants me to upload 'em.

I need to bring up that I'd like to rip Shi Kong Xing Shou's tile set (if no one else desires to), but so I (may) have an easier time doing it, could someone translate what the two codes for the game do plus the codes itself (so it's not in Chinese letters requiring a key to enter them)? I know one is start with max money, but it's half pointless considering how quickly you can build up money just from fighting wild beasts over and over (since there really aren't any "trainers"), and I couldn't get the other code to work. If anyone wants to also translate the codes for Shui Hu Shen Shou, I'd be thrilled.

EDIT: I found out if you play the game on KiGB, the Beast-dex doesn't become glitched like it does on most other emulators after saving and reloading. All the ones shown are the ones normally encountered on the first route, which is where I am now leveling up Ballot's partner Beast.

There's something I just learnt from the walkthrough.

During the first time Newton is spoken to, he mentions "Hey, you're Dr. Salah's son, Ballot!" So does this imply that Ballot's full name is Ballot Salah?

I suppose so...Did they ever mention Ballot's father's name before, or did they just call him  Dr. Salah as well?  It's been forever since I last checked that walkthrough.

Well this is related with Shui Hu Shen Shou. I apparently got screwed up the arse in a rather strange way. Not long after acquiring the second of whatever you're trying to obtain from the towers, before you reach the desert region, a large man that resembles a burglar that you've seen before transforms himself into a large stone monster that you automatically acquire. In a similar fashion to HM's from the Pokemon games and also with the beasts' abilities from Shi Kong Xing Shou, this rock monster allows you to smash your way through stone barriers. However, since the ability of the beast you acquire afterwards (x2 running speed) doesn't go away when you deposit that monster, I figured if I deposited the rock monster, I'd still be able to break the rocks, turns out no such luck. Then I took him out so I could do more landscaping only to have the rock monster's ability wiped out of him, rendering me unable to smash boulders and trapping myself in a portion of the game that I need the monster to escape from. I tried putting him in the first slot of my party; I tried mashing every button in both the over world while standing next to a rock, as well as while viewing the rock master's statuses I simply forgot how to activate monsters' special abilities. ;___;

But onto stranger news. While playing SHSS today, I came across something rather... interesting. Just like SKXS, Shui Hu Shen's monster/beast deposit system is buggy beyond belief, with the same glitches as in SKXS, but, with the added case of sometimes placing in monsters you've never caught. Mostly when this happens, trying to use them in battle will render them unable to fight as either they'll have no HP or learned moves, or even lock up the game.

But, today when this happened, I ended up with a monster that does not even appear in the dex. You can take it out of storage, and (try to) check it's stats, and when you do, the game (big suprise) locks up. But before it does, you're given a glimpse of it before the game freezes.

May I present to you; the one monster that never made it to the final:

Monster No. 109: The DERPY POT! (unofficial name)

Actually, that is the only "unused monster" I came across. The other two I ended up in the past months do exist in the dec, and they are catchable in the game, it's just I've never gotten far enough (and I don't know if I will if Sr. Rocky refuses to do his duties). I've gotten an unusable No. 001 a few times via this glitch.

A follow-up to my previous post; if all else fails and I still can't get my rock monster to smash away the boulders I need him to, I may have to back up my save, losing the two monsters I caught in the secret forest, plus progress on leveling up the monsters.

If only Shui Hu Shen Shou had the same attention span as Shi Kong. It had nicer graphics (mostly with the monsters), allowed backtracking to previous areas, and even had somewhat of a darker plot. Then maybe we'd see full sprite rips (mugs, tilesets, everything), and create a game that merges the two games into one (editing the SKXS monsters to make them like the ones in SHSS, and replacing/severely modifying the plagrised ones, like the Pokemon and Telefang ones, or the monsters that look too alike/similar to one another. Shui Hu's monsters will be kept the way they are.

Yes I am planning my own fan game to Shi Kong and Shui Hu.

Title: Shi Kong Xing Shou - Galactic Beasts/Space Time Star Beast
Post by: Superjustinbros on June 24, 2012, 07:55:36 PM
I forgot to mention the multiplayer features, thanks for bringing that up. Though how I'd see the multiple versions thing going, it'd be only in SKXS+, Past Version, the landscaping would look more oriental and be altered slightly, to fit with Shui Hu, while still featuring the same plot (Ballot's father goes missing, he must collect engine pieces and (most of) the beasts from Shi Kong, though with a Shui Hou flavor. Both SK and SH beasts appear in both games, though like with Pokemon, the game you play, either Past or Future, determines what beasts you can confront. This remake will bring fourth Shui Hu's tower feature, and NPC's that demand battle if you approach them in their line of sight, which now appear on the routes, which are extended significantly, and also can be connected to more than two towns and have more interesting features, including one-way routes that lead back to a previous town/route, sometimes are blocked by obstacles that cannot be removed the first time the player may come across them.

The overall world map will be a fusion of both Shi Kong, Shui Hu, and in some (though minor) cases Pokemon. For example, there'd be the towers in the major cities where you fight leaders for medals, the amount of water-filled areas which require Merlith to cross increase, and you even spend a part inside Ballot's mind when he dreams of seeing his father, with monsters to catch and a single man at the end that prevents escape unless his beasts are defeated. In places where you could become trapped until you complete the area, a character appears and allows the player to warp back time, sending him/her to the area before the player enters the inescapable-until-defeat area. Fallen beasts do not revive with 1HP after battle, and losing all monsters causes a white-out and respawn at the last healing center the player visited.

The partner beasts can now be checked on ala Pokemon Yellow with emotions and everything, and they can also obtain new abilities as the game progresses.

*Bladeberus, whom starts with no ability, later is able to boost the player's walking speed (like what a certain monster can do in Shui Hu Shen Shou, because of this, your default movement speed is slow) by 1.5x, destroy rocks with a headbutt, and move certain boulders, the later both which allude to Rock Smash and Strength, two HM's from the Pokemon games.
*Beattro can learn to fly/warp players to visited towns, for quicker transportation.
*Electreep learns later on to turn on/charge up machines for a variety of purposes.
*Chromanix can burn down weak trees and remove them temporarily.
*Merlith, besides crossing over water, can learn to climb up waterfalls, and very late into the game, even dive into deep water automatically upon the player's command.
*Muserode can re-trigger battles/rematches with defeated "trainers" after taking 500 steps following victory.
*Signaliton can scan areas for hidden items, some which are unavailable until they are revealed. Must charge between uses.
*Drawville gains no new abilities, but it's ability to spawn random items is made much more strict. The player must now take 750 steps and also must wait 8 minutes before it's ability can be used. the chances of spawning better items are much rarer, and it always fails when inside a building.

I'll get more into detail about the beasts and their graphics later in detail soon. For now, I leave you with a chart, detailing all 267 beasts and which ones are determined to be removed and replaced (reds), as well as modified excessively (blues).

EDIT: I found out there is one duplicate spotted in the pic, the liquid dragon that appears both as No. 114 and No. 259. Maybe we could make the second a Poison-based dragon made of oozing sludge instead of water?

UPDATE: Finally figured out the scenario to my rock man refusing to destroy boulders, just back up the save file. I caught the two monsters that I did before the backup, and swapped out one of my monsters for one the Rival abandons after you defeat him in the desert. I secured Chapter 3 not long afterwards and beat the chapter's true boss on my first attempt (it was tricky) and rode a dragon in the water to a new area filled with plant life. So now I'm going to focus on training until I get my current monsters in the Level 28 area (the starter needs to be at least Level 33, and the small fire dragon that I caught in a secret woods area should be anywhere over Level 30. Though I will tell you; leveling up in SHSS is a lot more complicated and time-wasting compared to SKXS.

For those of you that wanted more unused monsters, you've got 'em. Thanks to YY-CHR, I gutted out SHSS and found more monsters not in the dex (they are located far below the listed ones which is why Demonlemon missed them when he ripped the monster graphics last year). I'm going to assemble the sprites later (as they are scrambled) and post them here.

But just like Shi Kong, Shui Hu has seen but uncatchable monsters, like an overpowered Level 99 one that you have to lose to to continue the story; it is a large blue snake-dragon confronted at the beginning of Chapter 3.

In terms of the SKXS+ beast chart, I will make the final decisions on which ones will be modified and/or replaced, which now will include Shui Hu's roster.

P.S. If anyone knows this; what is the program Demonlemon used to extract the sprites? They don't appear anywhere like what you see in YY-CHR. :/

ANOTHER UPDATE: It's time to Kong this Shou. (does Donkey Kong wear shous?)

Double post, don't sue me.

But anyways I got a dragon that surfs over pools of water and the third badge. Apparently there's a tower in a cave underground surrounded by water, and when you approach the tower, it shows a clear background. So maybe the cave is just a pathway to the tower?

Starter's now at level 32 and I got others that are in the late 20's zone. If you need anything SKXS or SHSS, try looking at my previous post. I ripped all the unused/glitch monsters and added them into the list of SKXS+ monsters.

EDIT: Mockup for a sample battle in SKXS+, just to demonstrate that it will have SHSS monsters. Looks legit huh?

And we're back with a tri-post. Polished up a few of the current monster's appearances and started giving them types.
L -> R: Normal, Fighting, Shadow, Fire, Water, Grass, Stone, Sky, Physic, Electric, Steel, Sound, Ice, and Poison.
(I may have to split the "Shadow" type into Ghost and Dark)

I also got a lot of ideas from the Pokemon Gold hack Pokemon Prism, possibly way more than necessary. How about areas that only your Parter Beast (or in a few cases, any beast in your party) may enter? Or maybe the Zimmers are a whole undercover criminal organization and Lucy and Kuro just being the lone underdogs of the crew? Or how about our own Power Rangers knockoff that tries to do good but only messes things up further? How about a Beast orphanage where you can adopt abandoned Beasts by NPCs or other players across the web?

And here's updated on how fainted beasts work. Just like in Pokemon, any beast that reaches 0HP faints, and unless Revive or Max Revive or even Full Restore is used on it, it will stay down unless revived at a Health Center. Beasts in storage are all automatically healed, wheres in SKXS and SHSS, you had to take them out and then heal them, as any Beast you acquired when you already have a team of six (the current partner beast, plus five others) is not healed. The abilities of fainted partner beasts can still be used in the over world, they just cannot fight in battles, as they've suffered too much damage. Of course you could always change your team leader to make sure you don't end up with six fainted monsters at the same time. :P

Multiplayer battles work with players depositing all their Beasts (partners and others caught) then selecting up to six to combat another player's team. Trading is self-explanatory, though partner Beasts cannot be traded.

Oh yeah, and I need translations for the monsters from Shui Hu Shen Shou if Sink is still around, and before I go, I'll leave you with the logos for the remake:

Just so you know, Musical Soul/Muserode (010) is a slight edit of Quicksilver from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children.  I know you wanted to keep all the monsters original, so I though I'd point that out.

Oh, and is this remake going to stay 8-bit?
Title: Shi Kong Xing Shou - Galactic Beasts/Space Time Star Beast
Post by: Superjustinbros on July 19, 2012, 09:51:38 PM
I am going to leave partner beasts intact since Beattro is being kept the way he is. I could make Muserode more like a snake by thickening his tail (making it less jagged in the process) and up the design of his headphones or maybe connect the headphones to his side (like how people stuff mp3 players in their pockets) Also, many of the basic Beasts' similarities are much more noticeable compared to Muserode, as their sprites are traced/redrawn while Beattro's and Muserode's are at least designed from scratch. I might badass-up the more simpler Beasts (like No. 69) to make it look like some inspiration went into them.

With the one that was based on the fox demon (No. 135), I may make it into one of those yokai umbrellas with the one eye, arms, and long tounge.

The remake will stay 8bit, and will have a lot of soundtracks from Game Boy RPG's, plus Shi Kong, Shui Hu and Vast Fame's other GB titles that are RPGs. Pokemon Gold/Sliver/Crystal and Telefang's music are guaranteed to be heard at one point or another.

The Shadow type has now been officially split into Dark and Ghost.

Big apologies for the bump, but I was able to submit my sheets from Shi Kong onto the Spriters Resource (However I left out the mugshot sheet because it lacks the animal characters like the pig and crab, and the Beasts since like mentioned earlier, they are just cropped from their in-game sprites, with Bladeberus' eye modified. And I need to finalize what side-characters use unique mugshots and which ones just use the ones shared by multiple characters). I also didn't submit the monster graphics I'm using for SKXS+ since they are a mix of Shui Hu Shen Shou's beasts as well as Shi Kong, and they are also in greyscale, not color alike the game itself.

The intro graphics of Yan were also put on a separate page for Shui Hu Shen Shou, and like Shi Kong, I didn't submit Shui Hu's mugshots as they are incomplete.

If I get enough motivation, I may continue playing Shi Kong to get the proper color palettes for all the Beasts and the non-human character mugshots, and dig deep in with YY-CHR to find any mugs that may have gone unused.

Yea, I'm back; couldn't resist doing this.

I compiled up just about next to all the mugshots for SKXS+F and SKXS+P should they ever see the light of day. Sorry if the recolor of the shaded parts of everyone's skin makes them disturbingly realistic. Not sure what role Yan Long could take, though if I ever do have the newscasters from Crazy Monopoly (thanks for bringing it up on your personal blog, Qiezei), make an appearance, I'll use the original sprites as they're cleaner.

Is anybody willing to translate some basics from Chinese, such as the menus, mon names, moves etc?  I'm capable of creating a translation patch if there's interest.  Proof of concept (several months old, actually):

EDIT: A friend has offered me to translate if I provide him with a dump, so I'll get working on that!

I'm totally interested in a translation!  Sadly the best I can do with Chinese is using an OCR.

Hey Sanqui, that translation project looks like a good concept. Hopefully with that we could also get Shui Hu translated in the near future. :D

I'm back; Finally figured out what those + and - buttons in YY-CHR can do, and I got crystal-clear mugs from both Shi Kong and Shui Hu.

These are used when playing on a monochrome Game Boy that lacks color. It does the same trick of projecting a sprite onto a tile to emulate the illusion of more colors than the standard 4-color limit as some NES games do.

Man, do I ever bump threads.

So, anyway, in the past I have expressed interest in translating Shui Hu Shen Shou before. So, I got to work on doing a text dump/rough translation of the game's 108 monster dex entries, which is a start. I used the the strategy guide as a base (http://postimg.org/gallery/78zdggc/92579196/), as well as this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/108_Stars_of_Destiny). I drew hanzi with a tablet day and night just to convert the entries to plaintext (as well as give rough translations to give the idea of what it's saying, as Engrish-y as they are), and here is the fruits of my labor:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/i4t9txz8d4l8tmu/GBC_Shui_Hu_Shen_Shou_%E6%B0%B4%E6%B5%92%E7%A5%9E%E5%85%BD_Monster_Dex_Entries_Text_Dump_and_Rough_Translation_WIP.rtf (http://www.mediafire.com/view/i4t9txz8d4l8tmu/GBC_Shui_Hu_Shen_Shou_%E6%B0%B4%E6%B5%92%E7%A5%9E%E5%85%BD_Monster_Dex_Entries_Text_Dump_and_Rough_Translation_WIP.rtf) <- .RTF file in MediaFire for download

http://pastebin.com/sf6tmXpp (http://pastebin.com/sf6tmXpp) <- Slightly different Pastebin version of the above.

Hopefully, my efforts will encourage interest in further translations of the rest of the game. Hopefully. I don't even know how much ground this project is going to get off of. And anyone who has major knowledge in Chinese and English is free to "clean up" my translations and build upon it.

EDIT: http://www.mediafire.com/view/81vpa5iqctywtb1/Shui_Hu_Shen_Shou_水浒神兽_Type_Strength_and_Weakness_Chart.rtf (http://www.mediafire.com/view/81vpa5iqctywtb1/Shui_Hu_Shen_Shou_水浒神兽_Type_Strength_and_Weakness_Chart.rtf) <-- I also translated the weakness chart from the guidebook, here's the MediaFire link to that. Man, Vast Fame thinks of anything and everything. Who knows, this might actually come in handy someday. The preview won't display the chart properly, "attacking side" should be on the left.

You are welcome. Although like I said, the translations are very DUWANG-tier Engrish that can sometimes border on incomprehensible (or not) at times, so no way is my machine-translated effort on the same league as a respectable translation team might do. At the very least, my "translations" are mere placeholders for an actual translation to be handled by someone who's competent. Although I have heard reports from two actual Chinese-speaking people that Shui Hu Shen Shou uses "old words" (presumably meaning an archaic way of speaking (think Dragon Warrior's English localization) which does fit a game that takes place in the 12th century), so it might be tougher for those that are used to modern Chinese language to comprehend. At least I copied and transcribed the original Chinese descriptions decently, right?

I'm also working on Shi Kong Xing Shou's mon description transcription and "translation placeholders" right this moment, although I might have to actually slog through the whole game to get the entries, seeing as I have no base strategy guide or source material to draw from (Shi Kong's names are completely original, while Shui Hu's names derive directly from Water Margin's list of the 108 Stars of Destiny with little changes). Ah well, at least there's Youku to guide me through playing the game, right?

I'll keep this thread updated for when I do get all 152 of Shi Kong's monsters transcribed.

(As an aside note, I think Shi Kong Xing Shou's title is derived from Flint the Time Detective's Chinese dub (https://youtu.be/fZVkz3jWwNo?t=15m23s), more specifically, the Chinese name for (what the English dub calls it, anyway) their "time shifters", which is 時空獸 (shi kong guai shou), a one hanzi difference from 時空獸 (shi kong xing shou). Considering that the Chinese dub of Flint aired on Taiwanese television shortly before Vast Fame's mon game hit the store shelves, it may or may not be coincidence (especially considering the general obscurity of Flint the Time Detective (actually, is Flint somewhat popular in Taiwan? I know it isn't in the US), and the fact that the show handled collecting monsters in a way that set it apart from Pokemon/Digimon/other mon genre contenders). Keep in mind that the show itself is called 時空偵探 (shi kong zhen tan) in Taiwan. Some debating to think about, I dunno, I just remembered that the show even existed after more than a decade (who else even heard of the show anyway? I know I can't gather even one other person who remembers). It might be a really thin connection anyway, but you never know with bootleg developers)

I'm finally off duty of ROKA. YES! :)
I'll be busy from now on, because I have to prepare a lot of things of my life.

I found some news about SKXS :
 - Unofficial Walkthrough by me is under remastering.
 - There's method to save Mitt in EP 7. You'll found it out in my new walkthrough.
 - More info about ripoff sprites.
 - Some of translated G-beasts' name are fixed more appropriate.

Awesome, your sudden comeback was unexpected indeed. I thought you were gone forever. And you're going to update the old strategy guide? Great!

Anyway, after months, I...still haven't finished transcribing every Shi Kong Xing Shou dex entry yet. In fact, I have been taking a break for the sake of marathoning Flint the Time Detective my sanity. But you know what, maybe I will get to the game and catch/transcribe even more monsters today/this week. And maybe update the old SHSS Pastebin for some additions/slight corrections with the side notes (don't worry, as far as I can tell, all my transcriptions of the original Chinese entries are hanzi-for-hanzi accurate, but the English translations need to be less DUWANG-y).

In the meantime, to hold you over, here is an unfinished WIP Pastebin of what I have of the SKXS entry translations so far: http://pastebin.com/TNBuQKtz (http://pastebin.com/TNBuQKtz)

Again, your presence is a wonderful surprise. Maybe you can even help with translation sometime.

Thank you for translation support, Fergzilla! It helped a lot. :yay:

And thank you for Kenjuthedenjuu for official walkthrough scans!

Here are some more infos what I found :
* In official walkthrough, Ballot's name is written as 'Baroque(巴洛克)'. I guess this is Ballot's 'real' name - Maybe the game's glitch? However, his name is written as 'Ballot' on later walkthrough.
* First cheat code works, while next one doesn't.(Both in raw dump and header fixed version)
* I found some similarities among SKXS and SHSS. These games' skill table and item table are ALMOST same. It seems that SKXS seems to be 'prototype(?)' of SHSS. Well, SKXS doesn't feature fishing, so fish baits are not exist in SKXS.

Yeah.

In other news, I have been thinking about adding Zhuyin/Bopomofo (ㄓㄨˋ ㄧㄣ ㄈㄨˊ ㄏㄠˋ) and Simplified Chinese (简化字) to both games' transcription notes. It's only a matter of an easy conversion using tools. I bring this up because there could potentially be Chinese-speaking people in both China and Taiwan reading the notes, and I want to bridge any communication barriers since both countries (despite using practically the same language) have highly different (in terms of "commonly used depending on the country") ways of both writing and transliterating things. What do you think? Should I do it?

Currently, my notes only use Traditional Chinese (the default writing system for both games) and pinyin (mainly for English speakers to understand how it's pronounced, but used mainly in China too). It'd be very interesting to add, but I don't know...

Here's a preview on how it might play out:

Quote:

(SI= Simplified Chinese; BO= Zhuyin. In cases where both simplified and traditional name use the exact same hanzi between each other (eg. 宋江, 玉麒麟, 大刀, 青草精, etc.), the "(SI: )" note next to the name may not be used due to redundancy)

#8 - 雙鞭将 (SI:双鞭将) (Shuāng biān jiāng, ㄕㄨㄤㄅ一ㄢㄐ一ㄤ, Double Clubs (with "jiāng" added at the end), "Whip will")
OD: 常躲在草堆中,等獵物到來時,再用雙鞭將獵物捆綁起來。
SI: 常躲在草堆中,等猎物到来时,再用双鞭将猎物捆绑起来。
PI: "Cháng duǒ zài cǎo duī zhōng, děng lièwù dàolái shí, zài yòng shuāng biān jiāng lièwù kǔnbǎng qǐlái."
RT: "Often hiding in the haystack, and so on when the game comes, then whip the game tied up."
Also, as a bonus, here's some weird headless fanart from a while ago of Yu Qilin (#2) and Shi Jin (#23) from Shui Hu Shen Shou done by an artist in China.

Fergzilla // Wow, I didn't even know you're good at Zhuyin. I even don't know how to use it.

Anyways, 108 Demons(Beasts in SHSS) have 2 names - 'Real name' and 'Nickname=demon name.'
Let me give #2 for example : His name is shown as 'Jade Kirin/Yu Quilin(玉麒麟)' in game - This is his nickname in original <Water Margin>. Actually His real name is 'Lu Zun Yi(盧俊義).' Most of 108 Demon names' are based on their nicknames, but some of their names' are based on their real name in original <Water Margin>. Here's the list of them and their nicknames below :
Spoiler: click to toggle

On my upward SHSS walkthrough, all of 108 Demons' translated names are based on their nicknames.

And I was surprised that there was a Chinese fanart of SHSS.... Why Jadion(#2) and Nitrex(#23) changed their head each other? I hope there's fanart of Lilybouquet(#36) or Melblade(#59).

PS. I also drew some fanarts of SXKS ans SHSS too.

Aye, I just used an online tool to copy, paste, and convert my text in. Nothing too difficult. And as for those names, well, I already knew that as I used this Wikipedia article (which was also where I pulled the "real" name translations from) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/108_Stars_of_Destiny) as well as its Chinese Wikipedia equivalent (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%80%E7%99%BE%E5%8D%95%E5%85%AB%E5%B0%86) for guidance when I was doing my transcriptions. And I think the reason for some of the "real names" being used for some mons is that
Spoiler: click to toggle
. That's what I can gather anyway. We'll never know for sure unless if everything is translated.

And I dunno, that Chinese artist does strange things, I guess. He mainly draws Pokemon like this, but he does other things and original characters too.

Funny thing, I was also looking at these videos when I was trying to go through the games.

So, I've been meaning to ask for a while, but does anyone have any savestates for SKXS where all the monsters are collected? Or at least any VBA/Gameshark/whatever cheat codes I can input in an emulator to have all 152 entries filled up as "collected" or at least "seen"? I'm no good at making cheats myself. It'd make this transcription/translation journey a whole lot easier if I had either of those. If not, then I guess I will settle for just slogging through the entire game manually.

Turns out, my BGB emulator glitches out and counts every single monster as "seen". So what that means is that I took advantage of that opportunity to finish up the dex entries in so little time.

After so much time, my transcription and very Duwang-tier rough translation of Shi Kong Xing Shou's "Pokedex" is finally complete.

Here is the link to the Pastebin (http://pastebin.com/xd8MVLcG)

A downloadable .RTF file with pictures might come later this weekend. And maybe another separate version with Simplified Chinese and Zhuyin. And maybe a slightly updated version of the Shui Hu Shen Shou dex entries notes.

Oh, and also I might pen an unofficial comic adaptation of the story, using the (updated?) strategy guide by Sink Penol as a base. Maybe I will draw it alone. Maybe I will collab with someone (and pay them to do so) with me doing the sketched storyboards and writing. Maybe it won't happen at all and it's yet another overambitious project and I want to blow up the mooooooon.... But who knows? It's a thought, at least.

Well, with that, I'm off. Might check this thread later.

Whoa. Well done, Fergzilla.  :thumb:

As I told on PM before, the save file above is for a raw dumped version - so even 'caught' monsters are marked as 'seen'.(Caught counter itself works well, though)

Anyway are you really planning to draw 'Unofficial Comic'?! I'm also planning my own remake of this game - 'Galactic Beasts R'.

The comic is a thought, at least. No solid plans on that. Not even if it'll be drawn by me or someone else who's a very close acquaintance. I don't even have any tentative release dates or English names. I might draw a few "star beasts" as standalone pictures at the very least.

But in the meantime, if there is someone out there who is fluent in Chinese and willing to refine my rough translations to something that actually flows well and doesn't sound like an Engrish bootleg, then by all means they are free to do so. *wink wink*

Yeah. Hopefully I didn't use any "wrong words" in my translations (I tried my best to go with what's right, but with one Chinese word sometimes having two or more English meanings, it can be tough).

Perhaps you can put the refined translations in a separate file as well as the updated strategy guide?

Thanks. I noticed that the boss' (and pig mutation) palettes are all shared with palettes of existing Beasts, so I could just rip the sprites from YY-CHR and use the existing color palettes to give the correct colors to the bosses, with that old walkthrough that was made long long ago to serve as a guide.

I assume this is also the case with the bosses from Shui Hu as well, since that blue palette that the intentionally OP dragon boss has is shared with a few Beasts from that game.

EDIT: I made the Boss beats sheet.

Also, uncapturable bosses' and pig mutation data will be available in my improved walkthrough & standalone dex file.
Errors? Which errors What are you talking about? Are you talking about errors transcribing the Chinese from the original game to plaintext? I did try to double and even triple check my work, try to draw the hanzi as close as I can on Chinese-drawing tools like Nciku/Line Dictionary, all using a drawing tablet, and if I'm unsure about a particular hanzi (doesn't help that the game is in Traditional with its characters crammed into a 16x16 space. If this was a Simplified Chinese game, then I'd be whistling a different tune here), then I take it to Wiktionary, and in certain cases even ask some people from a Mandarin-learning IRC, and sometimes even going as far as to asking a few native Chinese/Taiwanese chat friends who do know the Traditional writing system if anything is right or wrong. Sometimes I even see some typos that came from the original game itself and not of my error, so in the case of that, I keep the original entry but also note some possible "corrections" to those typos on the side. I did do my research in more ways than one when it comes to converting the entries from text sprites in an 8-bit game to plaintext as 100% correct as possible, but do note any inaccuracies that I might have written on those notes, such as incorrect/skipped/extra hanzi that do not match up with the actual game, although I made my efforts to try and avoid those types of things. If you want to note any corrections but cannot type actual Chinese, such hanzi-drawing tools are actually pretty useful for that. Trust me, up until my efforts in transcription, the descriptions were literally nigh-ungoogleable/unbaiduable to even people who know Chinese, so I wanted to make a contribution at least.

If you are talking about any English-language errors, then yeah, of course it'll have mistakes all over. The Chinese-to-English "translation" really sucks, I admit that, and I won't even sugarcoat it, which is why I want it to be "refined" to begin with. I am really struggling with the Chinese language, and while a percentage of the translations come from genuine knowledge of a hanzi's translation or two, most of it was done by largely looking things up online. To be honest, I just wanted to hold people over by giving them an "idea" and "feel" on what the Chinese descriptions might be like in English until a "proper" translation can be done. I really hope that in the future, I know enough accurate Chinese words and syntax to do proper translations to English with little to no aid.

In fact, this image is pretty much an accurate representation of what my current translation efforts are like:

So I made two Imgur albums on the Shi Kong Xing Shou dex just for the heck of it. The reason I made two albums is because Imgur's upload-all-at-once limit is two short of the complete dex, so I decided to split it into an even 76 pictures per album. The albums include the original Traditional Chinese text, as well as conversions to Simplified Chinese characters and pinyin. This is so that Mandarin-speaking/reading people from all areas (China, Taiwan, overseas, etc.) can understand regardless of which writing system they are used to. Though this time I've decided not to include English/Engrish translations with them (maybe later)

Part 1, contains #1-#76 (http://imgur.com/a/aGh9r)
Part 2, contains #77-#152 (http://imgur.com/a/a3eDM)

This actually seems the most effective way of viewing the descriptions and the pictures all at once. Hope you enjoy.

This thread has been dead for a while, so I decided it was appropriate to revive it with this.

Also, think it'd be OK to post these on the wiki page as part of an "external links" section?

Also, localization suggestion in the extremely small chance that the game ever gets translated at all: why not name the game (and the creatures) "star shifters"? I say this because I still believe that the Chinese name was taken from the Chinese translation of "time shifters"/"時空モンスター" from a certain forgotten cartoon show that once aired on TV Tokyo/Fox Network/Chinese Television System that I mentioned earlier, so it might make sense.

I feel really sorry for that I'm too busy to get my job and I can't update any of my works. :(

Anyway, I found a video who is trying to translate SKXS here:

I remember this game very well, though I did know that theres a GBS rip of its music that I have since a long time ago but, only a few tracks of it are on it. If there is a complete rip of this floating about somewhere or if anyone's kind enough to do this then either would be lovely. I mean, I personally like the woodland theme that's heard just as you start the game. It has this mysterious feel to it if you know what I mean... ;)

I originally posted it on Glitchcity forum, but thought it'd be relevant here, too.

I think I found either a glitch or a very odd intetional thing in this game (on that dumbass mobile emulator MeBoy, so can't provide a save): if your monster holds that sphere that regenerates a part of health if it's low, and hurts itself from being confused, the sphere regenerates opponent's health instead, and your monster stays alive with 0 health (that remains that way even post-battle without becoming an obligatory 1hp, tho you can give the monster a potion and it'd be fine).
It happened to my Bladeberus TWICE, with that one jiagshi monster in the lighthouse.

I think it was fixed (don't have it anymore, and Meboy cuts names), I got it from hhug.
Also, I kinda forgot to say that it happens not after just any self-damage, but specifically fatal, one that triggers health sphere (so it could hit itself multiple times before that happens).

Btw, it's your walkthrough made for it, right? It's very good ^w^

Update: that glitch seems to be a feature, cause it just worked my way - Genkinos with regeneration orb (on the plane) that was confused by my Axpree, killed himself in two hits, but remained alive AND his orb regenerated Axpree instead (who then was able to off Genkinos in one hit).

I found one more glitch - accidentally, and it frustrated me real strong cause I saved over beforehands T_T I may be forgetting a detail or two.

Basically, if you have a monster with Transform, use it to fight a wild "ditto", and is faster than it, so you transform into it, so it can only copy itself, then switch monsters, so the "ditto" copies it instead, and then switch back and kill the copy (in my case, I had a dragon use Transform, switched to robot, "ditto" became a robot, I recalled the dragon and offed it), your first monster will get the moveset of the second one, and second one would get "ditto"'s moveset and only know Transform now.

Also, if your second monster gets killed, you'll wind up with both it and the first one getting "ditto"'s moveset - this will also happen if you don't fight "ditto", but other monster you transform into, then switch transformer away.

I think it's caused by that thing assigned to "ditto" where it gets the moves of what it was transformed into at the moment you happen to catch it. Guess this game has the same "everyone who uses Transform is Ditto" hangup gen1 Pokemon games have.

Basically, don't Transform and switch monsters, folks.

I am playing the fixed header version (not glitch-hunting, just playing - btw, is there really a way to keep Mitt alive?), so yes, it is in there. I succesfully used it to pass the moveset from a boxed monster to my main-team one who've got his rewritten with just Trasform after initial glitch (he learned a move from his normal set after level-up, tho - so now my boxed monster has Transform and this move).

I found one more glitch, not very harmfull, but irritating (prevented my Dravile from learning Laser).

Basically, if your monster who battled while using Transform levels up post-battle, you'll see the transformed form's moveset instead of normal one, and any new move you'll try to write there won't appear at all (neither normally, nor if you transform your monster into that one once more).

It is sure that Transform makes a lot of glitches - SHSS does similar.

Post by: MefistaCenobica on June 04, 2018, 09:52:54 AM
I would try remembering that when I'll play SHSS ^^'

Anyway, this glitch left me damn mad, cause my Dravile only knows 3 moves right now (as I've passed its moveset onto an auxillary monster using that other Transform glitch, so it only knows Transform+two TMs), and I needed that Lazer...

Necro-Threading.

I recently found a Google Plus post who is interested in SKXS - https://plus.google.com/+KrisKagurasBizzareGooglePlusProfile/posts/9JVNnFgQiTp (https://plus.google.com/+KrisKagurasBizzareGooglePlusProfile/posts/9JVNnFgQiTp)
This post shows main protagonists of SKXS and introducing them somewhat weird.
My opinion about the post:
* Baroque/Ballot - Yeah, He can be considered as a bootleg of Taichi in Digimon Series.
* Buck - Well, it seems that the poster missed the fact that he is a robot…. :\
* Nina - Is 'Aerith' meaning Aerith Gainsborough in <Final Fantasy VII>? Well, they don't resemble at all. Their only connection is - They're related with plant.
* Claude - I laughed for a while - Kyo Kusanagi?! And Chromanix's type is fire. What a coincidence!
* Helen - She's not wearing kimono - Similar-looking clothes like Nina.
* Lante - No reply on himself, and nice naming for Muserode as 'DJ Wisp.'
* Lloyd - He's sure genius, but not a boy - a young man.
* Mitt - No reply to him and Drawvile.

Does anyone have some precise ideas of how SKXS's battle system works? I've picked up the game again recently and decided to try and make a table type for it, but it's been barely 5 battles and I'm already completely stumped.
Situation is simple: I'm in an early game situation, with all monsters in my party (Mechanical Bird [Buck's partner monster], Biting Fruit and Tree Spirit)  knowing the move "Hit" (that default Fighting-type move all early-game monsters seem to have).
I encounter the flying-type blue unicorn thing on the route between Tech City and Crystal Village (which also knows Hit). Then I use Hit with Mechanical Bird, the game displays a message translating as something like "It's super effective". Okay, why not. The unicorn monster also uses it on my monster. The game displays something along the lines of "It's not effective". Okay, weird, but maybe the game displays different strings depending on whether it's a player attack or enemy attack.
So I switch to the Tree Spirit, use Hit again, and this time "It's normally effective" gets displayed. Now I'm starting to get confused. Is there some kind of STAB like in Pokémon? Does effectiveness change depending on which type uses it? Are there hidden "attribute affinities"? So for a last test, I switch to the Biting Fruit (which is the same type as the Tree Spirit) and uses Hit again. And yet another different message gets displayed ("It's pretty effective" or something).

So what is going on? Are there some kind of hidden double-types for each monster that affect skill effectiveness? It doesn't appear to be random, each message is consistent when repeating the attack with the same monster. Is it related to the amount of HP the opponent loses? (I don't think that's it, since I once encountered the water type "Gurgle Demon" thing, removed over 50% of its HP with a Neutral-type attack (Wing Beat) and the game still displayed the "Not effective" message).
I'm kind of lost right now  :-\

Whoa, it's been years since the last post.  8) I got a job in 2018 and went SO busy for years.

1. The unofficial English translation project is finally on air, by Zumi Daxuya.
Sample video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70uhDj6Vjvs&ab_channel=ZumiDaxuya
Github - https://github.com/ZoomTen/shi-kong-xing-shou/tree/english2

It is good that still some people remember Vast Fame Games.  :D

2. @WaddleBih //

I don't know the mechanism of damaging message, either. Well, it is clear that damaging message is not depended on type associations.

Type chart goes like this below.
Fight(鬪) < Shadow(暗) < Light(光) < Air(飛) < Fight
Wood(木) < Fire(火) < Water(水) < Earth(地) < Wood

PS - I saw some of your fanarts of SKXS and SHSS on your Deviantart. Nice work. :)
