Title: Unknown/Obscure GBA pirates
Post by: Barver on July 21, 2011, 01:17:57 AM
I considered putting this in the "What's this" thread, but since it's all GBA it may as well be here so it's more easily findable later =p

As some may know the GBA seems to have lots of still unknown titles out there. I wish we could get some clarity on these.

Lion King 3, this could be just Lion King 1 1/2 with a different label.

And the rest I've found, well just reference this Lost Levels thread:

http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?p=24349 (http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?p=24349)

www.game-boy.ru is an abandoned site now unfortunately, but you can still browse it and possibly even find more games they missed. The only one I have any clue about is Aladdin 2, more specifically the Russian version that's says Super Aladdin 2 on the box if you look at that site. I found this auction and asked the seller about it:

http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-186376156-alladin-2-game-boy-advance-gba-_JM (http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-186376156-alladin-2-game-boy-advance-gba-_JM)

According to him it's just a GBC game housed in a GBA casing. I guess he means the official Aladdin port on GBC, but now I have to wonder if this one is different from the other Aladdin 2 that doesn't say Super...

And if anyone is wondering, I looked into Kirby Red Diamond and it's just an NES emulator with Kirby's Adventure. Not a hoax as that guy speculates.

oh wow, how did i miss that lost levels thread? no doubt some of those are probably unknown Vast Fame games. I bet Lord of the Rings IV is an English (or Russian) version of that one you have.

There are quite a few GBA pirates out there that are just NES games running in an emulator though. I've seen Megaman and Pokemon games like that at least.

I'm willing to bet that Mario DX is just Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color. Either that or the NES version being played on an emulator.

That's a reasonable guess. With Aladdin 2 apparently being a GBC game it's not too improbable a good portion of these are just GBC or NES games in a GBA casing :/ Reminds me of this pirate:

If I remember correctly it's just Sonic 5 or 3D Blast 6 or one of those Somari hacks in a GBA casing. Showing it since I dunno how known it is, best people know now rather than find it later and end up thinking it's a unique pirate =p

Sonic Woirld? Apparently, they got an illiterate from Brooklyn to do the cartridge art. :P And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it's what you're guessing. Then again, it might be Sonic Adventure for all I know.

It can probably be one of the gameboy pirates by YONG YONG because i have seen S3DB5 on GBA or mabey a pirate cart and box for Sonic Advance.
Also i found a 36 in 1 bootleg. here is a video of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNIcNA5sFkc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNIcNA5sFkc)

Oh god, please SUPERSONICDUDE91 for all that is good on this green earth, don't be a klax and start posting a bunch of multicart stuff :x This topic should be for unknown pirates, or at least very deceiving like the Sonic Land Adventure one where someone might not know what it is immediately. A multicart isn't like that. Just...please ugh :x

And I found the topic about that game, and like I remembered it's just Sonic 3D Blast 6 I think. Sonic Retro post:

http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=11046&st=15&p=202606&hl=+pirate%20+land&fromsearch=1&#entry202606 (http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=11046&st=15&p=202606&hl=+pirate%20+land&fromsearch=1&#entry202606)

You have to be registered to look I think? But here's a quote if you can't look.

So, I recieved that thing.
Well, it's a terrible GBC pirate of Sonic 1. When the game starts, you see the artwork of Sonic Gems Collection with "Sonic World the land adventure". After pushing "start", there is a GBC version of Sonic 1's title screen.
The game begins in Spring Yard Zone, not entirely the same as we know, the layout is different. Controls are awful. I couldn't even get past SYZ act 3.
But I watched the demos after the title screen. There are Green Hill, Labyrinth and Marble zones at least...and the Green Hill zone reminds me of this pirate: http://www.sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=7&gameid=9&subid=1&artid=1 (http://www.sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=7&gameid=9&subid=1&artid=1)

It sounds a lot like Yong Yong's work but Sonic Gems Collection came out in 2005, and I don't know of any Yong Yong games made after 2001. Some screenshots would help though.

the "title screen" is probably just a GBA splash screen added before the emulation starts, a lot of non-GBA GBA pirates do that. so it could have been made long after the game itself. like "Megaman X8" which has a modified version of one of the Zero games' title screen before starting the real game, which is a very slightly hacked Megaman 4 running in PocketNES.

So it's basically an awful remake of Sonic the Hedgehog? Wonder where I've seen that before. ;D

Yeah, I don't think it's likely anything else besides one of the Somari hacks. How many other Sonic pirates out there start off in Spring Yard Zone? :P

Yeah, I suspect that whoever wrote that doesn't know the difference between a Famicom game and a GBC game. Like I said earlier, some screenshots would help.

Armed with the info you guys posted I trawled through a bunch of Chinese wholesalers and noticed a trend; apparently a bunch of them get their pirate GBA carts from the same factory as they've all got more or less the same inventory list along with the same game ID's that correspond to the titles.

I noticed that virtually every list has the same titles marked with some type of symbol, and several of these are obviously just PocketNES or are a GBC game reprinted with a GBA PCB and shell. However, some of them also use this same notation next to unlicensed games, so I dunno. Here's what I came across consistantly, besides a million GBA Pokemon fan-made hacks...

STAR WARS 3 ⊙
SUPER TETRIS DELUX ⊙
ALADDIN ⊙
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II⊙
SUPER MARIO BROS 3⊙
CONTRA FORCE⊙
BATMAN RETURNS⊙
POKEMON CRYSTAL ⊙
POKEMON BLUE DIAMOND II⊙
KIRBY STAR RED DIAMOND ⊙
SUPER ALADDIN 2 ⊙
SPIDERMAN 4 ⊙
CRASH BANDICOOT 4 ⊙
FINDING NEMO 3 ⊙
LION KING 3 ⊙
POKEMON EMERALD 2 ⊙
POKEMON RUBY 3 ⊙

So there were two separate model numbers assigned for the two Aladdins, two separate model numbers for "Star Wars 3" and the real "Star Wars: Episode III". Contra Force used the same box art as the NES version, as did Batman Returns. Seems like one (or all, I don't follow the series) of those Pokemon games was a GBC game.

Well if anyone wants to get those games and see what they are, all you have to do is ask volumerates since they apparently have the exact same source as the rest. I never noticed all those games on there before though, I even recall doing a find for "Crash" and never seeing Crash 4 :x

I'm guessing Crash 4 is the same one that 64scener has (the weird Sintax/VFame thing), though one never can be too sure.

I'd say it's the Jungle Book hack on my PVP Station, but I somehow doubt they're still making GBA pirates in 2011. :P

BTW, I think it'd help asking 64scener what the box art looks like just to see if it's the same as the one on Volumerates and such.

I swear N64Scener used to have a page that talked about Crash 4 and even showed box art, now I can't find anything, and I even asked Martin on his youtube channel and he doesn't respond. Is it a false memory? :x

Interesting that Star Wars 3 is there though, could it be that game I saw in Turkey all those years ago? O: You just *know* that if we request it from volumerates they'll only stock the actual Episode 3 game though.

It's probably just The Empire Strikes Back for the NES, knowing pirates. :P

Back to the "Sonic Worlid" (sic) pirate,I just can't believe that they (the pirates) spent ALL that time on the back of the box just to write it's legit.
That's such a desperate attempt to make people believe nonsense like that.

just a heads up, Volumerates posted a bunch of new GBA games (http://www.volumerates.com/cate/video-games-gba~r.1312434294U10894) (what? no that isnt an affiliate link, shh :D), again they mostly just added other titles from the same series as the requested games lol. so we can probably assume they can't actually get most of these games. but Digimon Ruby is there at least, and Digimon Ruby is awesome.

if anyone was wondering im having a problem with this that I kinda want to solve before I release it. the actual game data is only 4mb but it dumps as 32mb, with 4mb blocks like this:

1. Game
2. some repeating pattern of bytes
3. Game (duplicate of 1)
4. Pattern
5. Pattern
6. 00's
7. Pattern
8. 00's

i've experimented a bit and it seems like the contents of blocks 2-4 and 6-8 don't matter. 6-8 can be trimmed from the rom entirely and 2-4 can be replaced by 00's or whatever, but the pattern at position 5 (ie at 1000000-13FFFFF) has to be there or the game won't boot. I assume the cart doesn't actually contain a 32mb rom and it just returns certain bytes when ROM addresses between 100000-13FFFFF are accessed, as a form of (mostly failed) copy protection, but it does mean the rom is massively bigger than it should be.

Post by: Awesome Panda on August 05, 2011, 03:07:54 PM
Well if parts 2-4 are useless, can't you just remove them as well to leave 8MB in total?
Title: Unknown/Obscure GBA pirates
Post by: taizou on August 05, 2011, 03:13:02 PM
nah, the game needs part 5 to be in the right place. there has to be 12mb of something between parts 1 and 5, even if it's just 00's.
Unless I could modify the pointers somehow, i'll have a look..
Title: Unknown/Obscure GBA pirates
Post by: Awesome Panda on August 05, 2011, 03:22:25 PM
Well if GBA games are designed like NES games, then by my experience the main problem is trying to find the pointers. :\

yeah especially with this - i don't know where exactly it's going to be pointing to, just that it'll be somewhere in a 4mb block. so i don't have much to go on here.

I can get all of the pirates I mentioned in post 15 above, but I cannot buy less than 10 of each title.

If anyone truly interested in going in on a group purchase for some or all of them you are more than welcome to drop me a PM.
