Title: NTDEC likes classic heavy metal
Post by: codeman38 on March 28, 2011, 08:45:54 AM
Now that the game's successfully been dumped, there's an NSF rip of NTDEC's "War In The Gulf" out there now on Gil Galad's site. You can find it in the 03-03-2011 pack (which he's mislabeled as 03-03-2010) on his news page (http://gilgalad.arc-nova.org/news.html).

Anyway... Check out the seventh song in it (tune #6, for players that start counting at 0).

Why, yes, that is indeed a chiptune version of the Scorpions' "Rock You Like A Hurricane". It's... surprisingly recognizable, actually.

Now I'm wondering whether any of the other tunes are classic heavy metal tunes I'm not recognizing. They sure sound like they ought to be, and several of them sound incredibly familiar but I can't place them.

I'm pretty sure I've heard tracks 0 and 5 from somewhere before, but I forget where. Also, I wouldn't list The Scorpions as heavy metal myself. :P

On a side note, I just realised that the sound engine in this game sounds just like the one that Super Fighter III uses.

yeah, some of the other songs sound a bit familiar to me too, and even the ones that don't still sound like they could be ripoffs of some non-game music or other. and NTDEC has previous with this kind of thing, i remember them using Secret Agent Man in the Fighting Hero credits..

TBH, I'm willing to bet that the composer for NTDEC's games also did the music for those Unchained Melody multicarts. If I remember correctly, those use the same sound engine and have connections with Super Fighter III, not to mention that NTDEC themselves made multicarts back then with their own menu music.

BTW, I'd like to hear the Destroyer (http://www.er.uqam.ca/merlin/fd491499/nintendo/nes/megasoft/destroyer/) soundtrack if the game ever gets dumped. Wouldn't be surprised if there's non-game music there as well.

judging from the screenshots Destroyer *is* dumped. but i guess only privately, for some reason.

There's no public ROM from what I can find. There is a copy (http://cgi.ebay.es/CLONICA-NES-CARTUCHO-CLONICO-DE-COLECCION-DESTRUCTOR-/390280964601#shId) being sold on eBay, but it's going for an extortionately ridiclous price, quite frankly. Is anyone really stupid enough to pay 150 euros just for one bloody game?

hmm, speaking of NTDEC->SF3 connections i just noticed the font in Porter looks very similar to the SF3 one. its not identical though.

I've had this game since about 2008 (the brazilian CCE distributed version), I remember noticing the metal tunes.  There's a bunch actually:

Intro: Judas Priest - Electric Eye
then there's about 3 Scorpions songs including "Rock You Like a Hurricane, Still Loving You, and one more which I can't remember at the moment.  Those guys must have really liked Scorpions :)
then there's even Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train on one level, just the Randy Rhoades guitar solo!
