Title: Mystery Dump: Unknown 1.8" Handheld
Post by: davidstech on December 09, 2017, 09:10:40 AM
Posting this more for the sake of preservation and interest than any hope that this will be emulated any time soon...

This is a dump of the 32MBit serial flash ROM inside a unknown platform 1.8" handheld, the 116in1 "Retro Pocket Games" system widely sold in the UK (see Robert Dyas (https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/thumbsup-retro-pocket-games-with-lcd-screen?istCompanyId=bf3344d9-83f5-4abd-b69a-da131f7567d1&istItemId=xxmlirximl&istBid=tztx&source=&gclid=Cj0KCQiAsK7RBRDzARIsAM2pTZ977imIsCxc6g9p9ivCTUrJJ6fh4fBh6Iki-ufuLudyH3G_Ipp6W1MaAsKcEALw_wcB) as an example).

I can't find any strings and I can't guarantee whether this actually has the code for the games, or just the sound and images.

Photo of the PCB attached, not that it provides much of an insight.

The 1.8" handhelds are NES-based to some degree. You can see NES games running off a 1.8" handheld here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EkeZ-XCbzg), and some other bizarre format with the same games here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd6zUhnBfqs). Oh, and I'm pretty sure they're made by Time Top but I could be wrong on that.

I have a feeling there are two platforms going on, which are confusing things. There is this platform, which is probably some random microcontroller, and there is the NES based platform that I have also now dumped (the 300 in 1) which use some kind of new NOAC with similarities to the VTxx architecture.

As far as I can tell there is nothing in common between these platforms except a low resolution screen - and a broadly similar CPU architecture, although the non-NES based ones use a 65C02 or similar enhanced variant whereas the NES ones use a plain 6502.

There seem to be so many handhelds appearing.. I've started to collect them just as a sideline to collecting all the rom images. I'm sure there are still a large number of hacked roms still out there from the oriental countries.. A lot are added to the NonGood rom sets each year.. anyway.. enough of my inane babbling :)
