Title: Nice Code credit screens
Post by: AttackedbyGlitch on July 17, 2016, 06:25:02 PM
I've been a bit busy lately trying to look for interesting unused stuff in NES bootlegs and I've just discovered unused credit screens in nearly 30 Nice Code games! With the exceptions of Seaport Guarl and Pizza Boy (which don't list any names at all), they all have the letters PJ at the top with a list of credits below, with Robin Song credited as the producer and Wofire as the director. I'm assuming that PJ stands for PowerJoy, however these credit screens seem to have been removed on all the PowerJoy consoles I've checked.

I've documented them all in my userspace on TCRF (link (https://tcrf.net/User:AttackedbyGlitch/Notes/Nice_Code_Credit_Screens)).

Maybe the "NCG" in the Seaport Guarl credits stands for "Nice Code Games".

Maybe the "NCG" in the Seaport Guarl credits stands for "Nice Code Games".[/quote]It most likely stands for "Nature Color Game", a Nice Code alias used on most of the other credit screens.

oh wow that's cool, nice find! i found a few random snippets of credit related text in Nice Code games before, but I had no idea something like this was lurking in so many of them.

maybe there's some kind of button code to activate them? like the hidden credit screens in Sachen's games (which I think were included so Sachen could prove the games were theirs in the event someone pirated them and removed the copyright)

Oh, yeah. I'm a dummy.  :D

On the topic of NiceCode-related acronyms, on NiceCode's old domain name, nc-game.com, maybe they did "nc" instead of NiceCode so that if they wanted they could say it stood for "Nature Color"? I'm probably being a dummy here too but whatever.  :P

Big update on this, not only have I found way more games with these credit screens, but I've also found the button combinations required to access them!

In most games, press Up, Down, Up, Left, Right, Left, B on the title screen. In Final Blood, Fling Ball, Fruit Gift, Greedy, Ice Ocean, Jump-Jump, Seaport Guarl and Spider Man, press Up, Down, Left, Right, hold A + B (pressing A before B) and press Right. Aether Cruiser uses it's own unique button combination, Down, Up, Left, Right.

My list on my TCRF userspace has been updated to include more games with these credit screens and button codes for all of them. (https://tcrf.net/User:AttackedbyGlitch/Notes/Nice_Code_Credit_Screens)

oh nice! I found screens in a bunch more games using the Up, Down, Up, Left, Right, Left, B code:

Spoiler: click to toggle

Generally it seems like older games, newer games, Intellivision-port-hacks and VT03 games don't have them though, at least using the known codes.
