Title: More JungleTac GBA ports?
Post by: inability on February 03, 2016, 11:57:29 AM
So I won a PSP lookalike in a contest recently, and it's your typical portable GBA/NES emulator. Most of the games on it are simply ROMs of licensed GBA games, but I saw a few original-looking games hidden among them. I later found that most of these were ports of JungleTac games. Most of them are available here (http://s4.zetaboards.com/PGC_Forums?topic=8963358/1/). However, there were a few that I couldn't trace:

Hanoic Tower (obv tower of hanoi): https://imgur.com/a/Klmqi (https://imgur.com/a/Klmqi)

"On no Off" (actually Lights Out): https://imgur.com/a/6mcqp (https://imgur.com/a/6mcqp)

Mr. Onion (port of the JungleTac game): https://imgur.com/a/GVnIK (https://imgur.com/a/GVnIK)

Play Plane/Lightning Plan: https://imgur.com/a/ubvoW (https://imgur.com/a/ubvoW)

Plumber: https://imgur.com/a/zIimw (https://imgur.com/a/zIimw)

The two in particular which I couldn't find anything about are On no Off and Hanoic Tower. I suppose these were made especially for these GBA emulator manufacturers or something.

oh that's interesting o: Hanoic Tower has definitely shown up on other Jungletac consoles under a different name, and they've done Lights Out style games before, although I don't think I've seen any with those exact graphics. Is it possible to get the ROMs off this console?

Is it possible to get the ROMs off this console?
not right now, I've tried connecting it to a PC but it looks like the ROMs that come with the console are on a separate partition or something that's inaccessible.
I tried looking for more information on my specific console, and while doing so I came across this blogspost (http://dingoowip.blogspot.ru/2012/12/about-non-jxd-actions-semi-based-devices.html) about the firmware on these devices. The post included a dump of the files found on their copy of the firmware, which includes the Pool Pro and Plumber ports shown here as well as some new ones like Auto X , Final Round Tennis and Go, Smile.

For convenience, here are the games: https://www.mediafire.com/?0lpijiery4fp600 (https://www.mediafire.com/?0lpijiery4fp600)

I recorded footage of Hanoic Tower, On no Off, Mr Onion and Lightning Plan. It's available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NKSx0hzC5g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NKSx0hzC5g)

EDIT: I've found what looks to be the same console I have on AliExpress, if anyone's interested: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/4-3-LCD-Game-Console-PMP-MP4-MP5-Player-8GB-Free-2000-games-Media-Player-AV/32432621532.html (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/4-3-LCD-Game-Console-PMP-MP4-MP5-Player-8GB-Free-2000-games-Media-Player-AV/32432621532.html)

thanks for posting those! it's interesting that Jungletac games are still getting bundled with random emulator consoles, even when they come with standard roms anyway.. I wonder if Jungletac actually worked on the firmware/design for these things at some point, or if they just provided games for other companies and they ended up being thrown in with all the other GBA stuff.

Man, Jungletac really doesn't put much thought into these GBA ports. When re-scaling the graphics it looks like they just run everything through an algorithm and don't actually check if it looks decent. What's interesting, however, is that these particular ROMs appear to use the original MIDI versions of the music without applying a soundfont (compare Lightning Plan's music in inability's capture to footage of it on the Zone 60 or the Vii). I wonder if it'd be possible to extract them with GBA Music Ripper or something?

I'd get some proof for ya but I dismantled mine years ago for a school project or something.

By the way, if you google "Lightning Plan.gba" (or a handful of other Jungletac games) you'll find that someone's uploaded a whole bunch of the roms to Baidu. Unfortunately I've been unable to actually download any of 'em so far since the connection is so slow that it only makes it about halfway before dying (which is pretty spectacular since they're only a megabyte or two each), so if anyone else has better luck than me feel free to post 'em here!

I've reuploaded the files from the Baidu drive here if anyone is having trouble downloading them: http://www.solidfiles.com/v/vZ23YrzV2GQZP (http://www.solidfiles.com/v/vZ23YrzV2GQZP)

Indeed, they don't seem to work on emulators. This makes me wonder if there's some special code in the GBA emulators for these things that makes them work, but I somehow doubt it. I stopped trying to get the firmware files from my console a while back, but I might start again.

EDIT: Googling this time found me this thread (http://forum.china-iphone.ru/4gb-4-3-mp5-game-player-dpsp4g05-rmvb-pm8000-t9472-380.html) where people are sharing firmware files for what looks to be the same console (or type of consoles). There appear to be instructions on how to put the thing into "ADFU mode", after which I could possibly read the firmware off the handheld, but Google translate gives me incomprehensible output so I can't quite understand what's going on.

I have achieved a sort-of-breakthrough with the ROMs on Baidu -- changing the 4th byte from 15 to EA seems to put the game in a partially working state where it is playable but some of the resources like backgrounds do not load/are replaced with corrupted garbage.

Here are the modified ROMS for Lightning Plan, Hanoic Tower, Quick Move, Mr Onion, and On no Off: https://www.solidfiles.com/v/Vv3n2pMGaZYZa (https://www.solidfiles.com/v/Vv3n2pMGaZYZa)

The byte that I edited is apparently part of the "Entry Point", so my theory is that the original entry point does some extra setting-up stuff for the backgrounds etc which standard GBA emulators cannot handle for some reason. Perhaps someone with better knowledge of GBA internals than I do can shed some light on this.

I had that same problem with Pinball Fish and Squirrel Bobble a while back, it turned out to be because my copy of VBA hadn't been updated since 2005!

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I know the Zuma clone and Bubble Blaster work, which is a good thing since I think from experience, those two are my favorites. Then again, Mother 3 doesn't work either on there.

If you really want to try it on actual hardware, you can get an EverdriveGBA, which is more powerful than the EZ Flash IV. This is me assuming you want to play the games on the original hardware.
Unfortunately, since I don't actually have a proper GBA, I won't be able to test any fixes. Besides, the only possible fix I can think of is the one I mentioned earlier in the thread -- open the ROM file in a hex editor and change the 4th byte in the file from 15 to EA. Anything else is outside my realm of expertise.

In other news, I have worked out how to extract the files from a firmware image for one of these PSP-ripoff products. If anyone has any firmware images that contain the still-undumped GBA games, post them here and I'll try to extract the .GBA files from the image.

I've also found out that all of these PSP ripoffs are based on the Actions ATJ2259 SoC, for which there's significantly more info online than I could find previously. Hopefully this means that there's some information on how to enter the "ADFU" mode that lets a user copy the firmware from the device (which could prove useful if any of the devices with the undumped games show up somewhere).

How do you extract it from a firmware image though?
If you're talking about extracting the files from a firmware image, this requires a copy of the Actions Media Player Update Tool (I used this one (http://www.sweetpeatoyco.com/downloads/SweetPea3%20Update%203.23.zip) though I think there are newer versions out there) and OllyDBG. Basically you have to launch the update tool and load the firmware into the tool, then attach OllyDBG to the updater tool's process.
Then open the Memory Map (Alt+M) and sort the sections by their size in descending order.
Then right click>Search, and search for the hex sequence 53 51 4c 69 74 65 20 66 6f 72 6d 61 74 20 33 00 (that's the SQLite magic header).
Ollydbg should find a match pretty quickly and open a new window displaying the match, so right click that window>Edit>Select all and then right click>Backup>Save to file (or something like that). Then open the saved backup in a hex editor and trim off a few bytes from the beginning so that it begins with the SQLite header (i.e. the first few bytes should be 53 51 4c 69... etc). After that you should have an SQLite database that can be opened up in any viewer.
The files themselves are stored as binary blobs in a table called FileTable, and the interesting file is HideDisk.img which should have a copy of all the games in the firmware. (update: maybe not, I've come across some firmware images that have references to .gba files in them but nothing in HideDisk.img)

My PAP Gameta II Plus arrived today. I checked the GBA folder, and it has 27 of Jungletac's games on it. Here are the included titles:

Box Puzzle
Bubble Blaster
Bump Bomb
Busy Bong
Dragon
Fire Fighter
Hanoic Tower
Hero Legend
Hide and Seek
Hot Drop
Jewel Fever 2
Jewel Master
Lightning Plan
Manic Troll
Mr Onion
On N0 Off
output
Pinball Fish
Plumber
Pool Pro
Pop Ball
Quick Move
Rapid Stream
Rolling Cube
Super Move Quest
Tiger Resecu
Win Or Lose
Zippy Froger

It doesn't have Auto X, Go Smile, Squirrel Bobble, and Seek the Resources from zzcolby27's collection, so I added those to my pack. This increases our total to 31 games.

Now, i'm looking at miran's checklist for comparison. Sudoku.gba is Dr. Sudoku for GBA, and Soccer2002 seems to be Formation Soccer 2002 for GBA. I doubt Final Round Tennis is a Jungletac game either, since a licensed GBA game is called Final Round Golf. Happy Checkers is on my PAP Gameta II, and it's just a homebrew title by "Squally".

The only thing we're missing now is Toy Kingdom. Sadly, the game used to be available from this link but is no longer available. I'll keep looking: http://www.373q.com/files/289343.html (http://www.373q.com/files/289343.html)

In the meantime, enjoy 31 Jungletac GBA titles as I search down the last, elusive one: https://archive.org/details/JungletacGames-12302017 (https://archive.org/details/JungletacGames-12302017)

You can re-download the same zip file from archive.org or download the two games from this link: https://files.catbox.moe/9o6sb9.zip (https://files.catbox.moe/9o6sb9.zip)

I found these games in a Ritmix RZX50 emulator pack from Yandex Disk.

But Honestly, i like Ubisoft, they make good games like:

Colin Mcrae Rally 2.0 (GBA)
Largo Winch: Empire Under Threat (PC, PS2, XBOX, DC, GC)

and No, i did not mentioned the Charlies Angels Game on the Gamecube

I forgot to mention, we are missing also Happy Checkers, maybe it is also on this thing  :|

i like it, that i can choose which language it can be

and at last, it is good, that i can play in this game as Croatia, Germany, England, Sweden  ;)
