Title: origin of Somari's title screen

on the wiki we've got Mario Teaches Typing as the most likely source for the Mario on Somari's title screen, but to me the Somari Mario looks, if anything, more like official Nintendo artwork than the Teaches Typing one. so could there be another, official illustration out there that both games based their own Mario on?

I sort of agree with you on that, but what confuses me on this is that one of the sound effects in Mario Teaches Typing sounds almost identical to the score tally sound effect in Kart Fighter. Given both games are based off Mario I doubt that's a coincidence. Mind you, using that game as resource in the first place is odd in its own right so I've got no idea.
