Super Famicom/SNES / Multigame carts don't fully work on my snes
« on: November 04, 2014, 03:02:23 AM »
I wouldn't say its a problem with the console and is probably an error with the games themselves, especially if they are older.

SNES clones are not even remotely as common as Famicom or Mega Drive clones. Often multi-game carts for those systems that don't work right on original hardware do so because they were never designed to be played on original systems. Since SNES clones really didn't exist back in the mid to late 90's when these games were made they should work fine in your system. Some multi-game SNES carts I have won't even work right in clone systems.

There's a good possibility whatever bankswitching mechanism they are using (whether it be hardware or software) as crapped out, so you can only select what games it still manages to work on. Try the usual stuff like cleaning the pins, or even try a Game Genie just as a crapshoot.

Also, you're using a regular SNES and not one of the SNES mini consoles, right? AFAIK the mini doesn't put out as much voltage to the cart slot which could be causing the problem.

Mega Drive/Genesis / Street Fighter Zero 2000?
« on: October 01, 2014, 01:46:37 AM »
Stumbled across a Youtube video of this the other day, the cart is labeled "Street Fighter Zero 2000" (and also 64m..... yeah right). The full title screen displays "Street Fighter EX Zero 2000: Champion Edition".

The guy doesn't actually play the game, he just lets it run through the demo for about a minute. It doesn't have the Capcom or Sega logos nor does it have the skyscraper intro. My first reaction was that it was just another hack of the Turbo beta like SF III: 18 People. However once the title screen fades out it shows Ryu's bio in Japanese, which the beta does not have and could only be taken from the commercial release of the Japanese Special Champion Edition (or SFII' Plus as it's named in Japan).

Because he never played the game it's impossible to tell what's been changed gameplay-wise. The title screen also has a copyright date of 1999-2000 and from the condition of the cart it looks brand new.

Has anyone ever seen or heard anything about this? I have an unhealthy obsession with SFII and I'm intrigued to find out if this is something beyond a crappy title screen hack.

Game Boy / Street Fighter II original Game Boy oddity??
« on: September 27, 2014, 05:26:12 PM »
That's interesting, I've never saw a pirate for this particular game. Although I don't understand why they would go through the trouble of making such an "official" looking fake label and not just copy the original one.

Thanks for sharing!

On a similar subject has anyone verified that a pirated game actually came with pirated instructions? I'm not talking about unlicensed originals, I mean a genuine counterfeit of a commercial product that came with a reproduced manual.

The closest thing I ever found was a boxed copy of SFII:SCE for MD. There's a scan of both the box and cart of a similar version on the Sega Retro site listed above but both my box and cart are slightly different. The ROM itself is actually a pirate of the Japanese version (Street Fighter II' Plus) and at the time I purchased the cart it was apparently undumped because Goodgen couldn't label it and no other list had a [p] version of the ROM. It came with a manual, but the manual could have been swiped from the HK/Asian version. Paper wise the manual seems legitimate, but there's a few oddities here and there (like lack of warnings or TM's) that make me think its a fake, but I've never been able to find someone with an original copy of the Asian variant to verify it.

Edit...

Also Awesome Panda, on those multi cart picks what is #8 on the shooter named Desendu? And the other with Doremon named Ding Dong?

My understanding is that some of these cartridges came in parts, i.e. there was a factory in Taiwan or mainland China or wherever producing the boards (and maybe the artwork?), while the cartridge shells were produced locally. I'm guessing the costs skyrocket when you start shipping plastic around the world, although some people seem to have done that anyway.
Most carts in my experience are manufactured in the same area, the big electronics manufacturers have their own molds they use so they don't have to rely on outside sources.

If it helps you any, I have pictures of every pirate game I've owned, plus a ton I've just got pics of. A lot of them I uploaded to the Bootleg Games Wiki pictures section so feel free to browse there and grab all them and I can also send you those from my personal collection. I really support this endevor whole heartedly since it's a very niche subject that I find immensely interesting.

I also have stock lists with stock ID's that use the numbering method I mentioned before. I can provide you these along with corresponding pictures to some of them if that information would help you any.

Also, the vast majority of the multi-game carts produced after the mid-90's are designed for clone systems sold in their own areas so they do not work on normal MD/Gen units because they lack the TMSS check to get the cart to boot. Those made with the Tomsoft SDK are a complete crapshoot to get to work, but a lot of the multi-game carts without TMSS will boot in an older non-TMSS MD/Gen or will boot in a newer TMSS machine if piggybacked on a Game Genie since it will use the TMSS routine programmed in the GG to get it to work.

I am indeed - guess it had a bit of a legacy after all!

Legacy indeed, such a ton of information on the site that you can tell an incredible amount of work went into it. Nice you see you around and still interested in unlicensed rubbish.

So, has anyone attempted something similar to this before, so I can build up a more competent picture of the situation? I've found a few patterns, but vast chunks of these things have no external clues at all.
A lot of carts have a stock ID printed straight on the label (DK-XXXX, DT-XXXX). DK's are single game carts, DT's are multi-game carts. Often the multi-game carts will have this same stock number on the game menu selection when you start the game.

The numbering of DK's sometimes coincides with the ROM size, for instance a 16m game would be DK-16XX. Single game carts with an ID that ends in either A or B (like DK-1604a & DK-1604b) are either title screen variants of the same game or better yet only label variants with no difference in game content. Multi-game DT carts go up to 64m and sometimes (not always) have a similar numbering method that corresponds with the cart size.

It's hard to tell which manufacturer these ID's originated from as different manufacturers across the globe use/steal the same assets from each other (both ROMs and label art). As an example I have several copies of one game, both directly from the manufacturers, some from China and the others from Argentina. Both use the same exact label assets and ROMs, the only clue that they didn't come from the same place is that one shell has "manufactured in Argentina" on the back while the other has only the usual cart handling warnings.

Famicom/NES / Family Kid title screen oddity
« on: July 13, 2014, 04:11:05 PM »
I've got a Family Kid cart that I've had for a few years now. You know how on some carts you sometimes find alternate or hidden stuff by rapidly hitting the reset button on a console or fooling with stuff in a ROM on an emulator?

I had never came across this during normal gameplay when using this cart on a Famiclone or NES with 60-72 pin adapter. However, when trying it out on my Retron5 (which is an android-based emulator that just dumps the cart and runs the ROM) it always boots to this screen allowing you to select either Family Kid or Aladdin 4.

Strange how this acts this way every time on this particular emulator but never acts that way on real hardware. I'd say Aladdin isn't actually present on the cart, even if it was this particular emulator doesn't support the correct bank switching or mappers for it to run.

What the hell was Aladdin 4 anyway?

Great find, I have never seen a version of this game without invincibility turned on. I don't know if that was something done on purpose or a glitch when fixing the copy protection but it is nice to see a version that can finally be played correctly.

Do you still own it?
I should have worded that better. I own the MD version, which I had never saw that cutscene that was in the video posted above of the SNES version.

Has anyone played that game extensively enough to see that poorly drawn Liu Kang cutscene where Sub Zero punches his head off?

I've owned the game for years but never played it beyond the 2nd level or so due to it being complete rubbish.

I always used the older type floppy backup units on the SNES stuff and never had any problems with what either Barver or I owned. The one game that I didn't get a complete dump of was Hercules 2. I always made dumps with several different machines in case one didn't transfer correctly and I think that if I had kept my original images it would have worked. I assumed I had a working dump and accidentally deleted all but one image, which I never could get to work and when D4S looked at it he thought it was an incomplete dump since it referred to ROM addresses above what was actually there.

The dump we ended up with for Hercules 2 was 16Mb and I'd about bet anything that is the correct size, just some info cutoff or didn't transfer correctly. The only known unlicensed SNES game that is above 16Mb is The King of Fighters 2000 which was 20Mb. I see no reason for Hercules to be beyond 16 being that it's just a standard port of the MD game and all other MD ports were 16Mb.

Good luck, i hope you manage to get them both. Be aware that both will have copy protection that will need to be removed before they'll work correctly.

The only bad thing is unfortunately they'll both pale in comparison to their MD counterparts.

I know I've heard that song a million times before. Is it from a MD game redone with the SNES sound driver or from another SNES game? And that cut scene where he punches Lui Kangs' head off, is that in the MD version? If it was I never saw it, but then again I never actually sat down and played the MD version for more than 5 minutes.

Do you still have DBZ for SNES?

Super Famicom/SNES / I'm Back, with SNES' Tekken 2 (and a question) :D
« on: December 05, 2013, 02:50:53 AM »
I've wondered about this for a long time myself. The SNES and MD versions both have projectiles but I've never once pulled one off, even by accident.

All of the other 16-bit fighting games use the standard quarter circle and half circle moves to do the specials. Maybe where Tekken 1/2 was the first one it didn't implement that yet?
