Title: Desert Storm
Post by: iniche on December 16, 2010, 03:15:21 PM
Recently, I received the Sudoku 49-in-1 in mail. Not only that, but I beat Desert Storm. Overview:

-Definitely made by Waixing. The game's engine doesn't exactly seem to be that of Super Contra 7, but very similar.
-You start with the spread gun as default and can get machine gun, "laser gun", barrier and powerup to get back to spread gun. You keep your gun if you get killed, this time.
-Music is annoying, but tolerable in some spots.
-The game contains 4 levels, each divided into 2 long sub levels. So there are technically 8 levels. The first 2 are quite easy after you learn the pattern etc. But the last 2 levels are unforgivingly hard due to shitty gameplay.
-The game actually boasts an options menu where you can set the number of lives for you and your partner (0-10) and even 3 difficulties (easy, medium and hard).
-Sound effects entirely from Super C.
-There might be ripped graphics from Super C besides a grenadier and slugs.
-If you compare the copyright number chain on the bottom of this game with Super Fight I, the latter might be released first.

This one is mostly aimed at Taizou: I seem to have found a cheat code of sorts. Get to any level after the first one and get game over. I don't exactly know what triggers the cheat, but you can continue on the level you died. Basically, I held A and B buttons and tried hitting start. Then, I held B alone and tried hitting start. Then I held A alone and kept hitting start. About 5 out of 6 times, it took me to the level I last died on. I don't exactly know what's the combo, so if you figure something, that'd be great.

Since this has been dumped, I think I'll have to do the playthrough myself. ;)

(also sorry for bumping this 2.5-year-old thread)

[/quote]It isn't exactly a mapper fix. Desert Storm was ripped from the multi and was assigned standard MMC3 mapper. The VT03 version is completely different in palette coloring and, btw, that version appeared on the WXN pack. Tried running it on EmuVT but failed. :\

I ment I was glad the the 120-in-1 was working not the single dump .
I thought it was the mapper that wasn't right & thats why it wasn't playing.
whatever the error was I'm just glad it was fixed. ok enuff of this bickering im off to work .

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I've found some rather interesting techniques, exploits, etc. I also intend to make a playthrough soon.

-If you keep a spawn point at the edge of the screen and keep shooting the things that come out of it, you can get a boatload of extra lives. This is especially easy on level 2A with the flame gun and one of those spinning pac-man spawners. I recorded a short video of this and will probably toss it on YouTube soon.

-The climbing mechanic is a total crapshoot. It seems that what you have to do is hold up and shoot in order to grab on to a platform or chain, but it only works when it wants to.

-More Super C rippage, in the form of the little blobs that the 4th boss drops that squiggle along the floor. They also seem to use the exact same code as in Super Contra 7, where they dropped out of the final boss's eyes. While on that subject:

-The game's engine is way, way too similar to Super Contra 7's engine. The enemy movement, the physics, the scrolling, it all feels exactly the same. Level 4A also seems to use many of the same graphics and (I think) the same layout as level 2 from SC7.

-The continue code Iniche mentioned is actually just as simple as spamming the start button after you get a game over.

-The first boss can be easily broken by laying down in the left corner and holding down the fire button. Nothing will be able to kill you, even when it looks like it should.

Well, there's all my assorted observations. Someone should go through the rom with a tile editor and see if there's any leftover Contra sprites or terrain in there.
Update:
Today I was determined to beat this game, but kept dying on level 3 and continuing. As a result, the palette eventually started getting worse every time the screen changed.
Spoiler: click to toggle

Apparently, Desert Storm is so bad that the programmers don't want you to see it anymore, if you keep dying. :P

That only happens in the actual ROM of the multi. I played the ripped ROM, kept dying at level 3 and nothing happened.
