Oh OK like that kind of pirate. One question though, so does a pirate copy of a legit game mean that it wasn't originally licensed in that region, like a game from the US or Japan that wasn't released there, so they made an unofficial release of the game there?
Not necessarily.  It is in certain cases like Mega Bomberman because it wasn't "officially" released in Asia on the Megadrive, to my knowledge.  Usually it's just the bootleggers trying to make a profit off of the game by tricking people to buy their pirated version.

@Qiezei: I watched the video of Super Mario World 64, so I assume that the game is basically a port of SMW to Genesis huh? One thing funny I noticed is that the game reuses music from the Tale Spin game on MD.
It's intended to be a port, but after the two or three levels they basically did their own thing for the rest of the game.  It also re-uses music from Super Battletank in the castle level and for the ice level it uses, I swear to god, the Jeopardy theme.  Oh, and you may not notice it, but the controls aren't very good.  Think Yong Yong controls, except you can't press the reverse direction to stop.  And the second level has one swinging platform that, unless you can land on the small 16x16 center block, you're literally making blind jumps and praying you land on it.

@Qiezei: Yeah I didn't think there'd be many pirate companies from Japan, considering that there's just a lot of legit companies from there like Nintendo and such. I'd say making a Pokemon pirate there probably would work. :D But then why are some games rarer then others? Did some companies make less copies then others? Btw what is Super Mario World 64 like?
Like I said, some are common because many generic bootleggers just stuff the dumped ROM into a cartridge, and some of the rarer ones I guess either had a limited run or they're restricted to certain, obscure areas, making them rare.  I can't really confirm the reasons, but they are rare.  Nevermind, Taizou gave a better explanation.

As for SMW64, you can see a video on Youtube of the game here.  I did a video of the game (and have a copy of it), but I didn't get as far.  There should be some videos of the game on Nico Nico Douga as well, if I remember correctly.

@ Taizou and Qiezei: So it's basically pirates vs. pirates huh? So in those countries, can one buy these games easily? Like they're sold in video game stores? Btw is there any Japanese pirate companies? Or not so much?
I've heard that they don't really sell old stuff like Famicom games in stores anymore, but I can't confirm that.  You can find that stuff online rather easy, though the game itself can affect how rare it is.  Some of them, like the undumped games, can be very hard to find (Super Mario World 64 being an example) while games that have been dumped like Shui Hu Shen Shou (Vast Fame) are easy to find copies of because most of them are cheap generic bootlegs of the dumped ROM.  Reigon is also of importance, as stuff by companies from China are easier to find in, well, China, while the same applies to Taiwanese games.  That's why you can find original Vast Fame stuff over on Ruten while it's almost barren over on Taobao (excluding the occasional third-party published games).

I don't know about there being pirate companies in Japan, but there are two unlicensed companies: Hacker International and Happy Soft.  I kinda figured that Japan's laws would've kept out a lot of bootleggers.

The Papillion theme seems a tad off to me...but still, nice work!  Chai Kingdom sounds better than the original GB song.  :P

Pirates have copy protection? Seems a bit ironic doesn't it? "DON'T ILLEGALLY COPY OUR ILLEGALLY COPIED GAMES!!"
It's basically a free-for-all over there.  You have bootleg companies ripping off other bootleg companies constantly.  Vast Fame's had at least two of their games bootlegged by two other companies, with one of those games being a bootleg of the Digimon series.

BTW, regarding the image in Barver's first post in this thread, what's that Vast Fame game to the left of San Goku Shi: Aoshi Tianjia?  I don't recognize that one...

1984-1992 / Is Somari beatable?
« on: August 16, 2011, 07:09:01 PM »
It's beatable, but really hard.  I've actually managed to avoid getting hit much in Green Hill Zone; it's a matter of taking the levels very slowly to avoid those goddamn buzz bombers (excluding Labyrinth, of course.)  Otherwise I wouldn't say it's too bad.

I wish I knew Game Boy ASM then i could maybe translate the damn thing and fix the bugs.
Not to mention the balancing stuff.  When you have enemies that can poison put to sleep, and paralyze you all at once with 100% accuracy, that tends to be a huge problem.  Same goes for the one-hit kill stuff.

It was the Squirrel King hack.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Sorry for bumping an old topic, but by Squirrel King do you mean it's the same as the Mario Bros pirate for Genesis that was basically the same as Squirrel King?
Yeah, since there's no other known Squirrel King hack.  Besides, it wouldn't make much sense if a game advertised itself as a Mario game and ended up being something else.  Never mind, I just noticed my copy of Pocket Monsters 2 that has Disney art on the label. :somari:

It's most likely a multicart full of ancient NES games running on VisualNES.  I have a multicart like that claiming to have Bomberman Max and Rocket Power, but it was full of the typical fodder like Pooyan and Battle City.

As far as identifying multicarts, they're usually pretty random.  Unless they're something like the Silver Version 12-in-1 Multicart, which is an official multicart full of unlicensed titles, they're usually dime-a-dozen generic bootlegs.  If they promise more than, say, 4 games, they're usually full of small-sized, early games like Pooyan, Bomberman, Battle City, Lode Runner, and Bomb Jack.
