I did own it at one point, but I sold it off.  The second level is a damned nightmare at the end because you have to make a blind jump onto a rotating platform.  Your best best, aside from jumping and praying, is to guess where the tiny center block is and aim for that...After trial-and-error on where the block actually is.  I've made it beyond that like, twice, and died to that damn poison mushroom before the goal.  As Azathoth said, fuck that level.  It alone is one of the things that made me decide to get rid of the game.
Wow guys...That IS the pinnacle of bad level design. But then again, although it isn't level design per say, the amount of Ryu's in bootleg fighters that constantly spam the Hadoken and Shuriyken (bad spelling? meh.) could be contenter for worst design choice. Just a thought that occurred to me.

And that second part is why I'm not going around asking for GBC dumpers, because I have some really rare games that may take forever to find again and I want to make sure that they're going to the right people. Don't wanna lose Sheng Shou Wu Yu after all these years. :X
Trust, like in many places in life, seems to be hard to find even in dumpers. :\ But I can't say I blame anyone, I'd be wary too and the existence of entities like Sky League just seem to consolidate that. Oh well, it's like me mamma always said: "Dicks be everywhere. Y'just can't let them fuck ya."

So I guess all we can do is keep doing what we do best, get those bootlegs and try to dump 'em ourselves like the pirates we are, yarh-harh! >;)

I was just referring to pirate stuff before, but I see Barver's side of the arguement as well.  Also, I'm crossing my fingers that Azathoth will have some better luck with dumping the game this time.  It'd be nice to play beyond that horrible second level...
We can but hope, man. But I'm curious about you saying it'd be nice to play past the second level, does this mean that there's a copy around online already that just has copy protection that kicks in after the second level? Ooor, and I know this is probably a lot more likely, you have a copy of this game yourself (which if memory serves, ya do) and want to cheat your way past said level with the glory of emulators? :D

Also, just an aside: TaleSpin music in Mario, lol. >;)

Lol, I was kinda told to keep the ROMs to myself to keep the price of the pirates high.
Someone told me the same thing once. But, you know, fuck that.
Hear, hear. Good sir, bravo!  :thumb:

Ah, you were thinking of ROMs of pirates? Can't say I can recall a single pirate release that's ever been distributed only after the dumper got money. It's a prototype-only thing, as far as I know. And with how cheap pirates generally are, it'd be a bit pointless if anyone did do that unless they were inflating the price because they think they're the only ones that can obtain it.
well Sky League do that, more or less. For a while they were selling otherwise unavailable GBC Sintax ROMs on Taobao for like 300 yuan (~$50) each. They also sold some kind of membership to get access to all their dumps, I dunno if they still do. and they also sell physical copies of games they seemingly just bought from other Taobao & Ruten sellers for massively inflated prices.
Hmm, well, I'll have to check up with the guy who told me that kinda stuff goes on. It was brought up when I mentioned I was going to try and dump some ROMs myself. Lol, I was kinda told to keep the ROMs to myself to keep the price of the pirates high. Urm, no. I want the damn things to be cheap as chips for people to enjoy so I'll dump away, thankyouverymuchgoodsir.

But yes, as protos go, I agree with you. Hell, I praticially squeed when I eventually got a chance to play the Sonic 2 Betas and that, I believe, wasn't anywhere near cheap at all.

Anyways, to wrap up this little discussion, all I can say is good luck with dumping that pirate! I think we'd all like to play that one. I know I sure would. :D

WARNING: DON'T ATTEMPT ANYTHING I JUST DESCRIBED!
Awwh. What a shame. I was going to print it off and put it on my wall as ROM dumping tips. :D

...In fact, I'm STILL going to do that.  >;)
Anyways, back on topic once again, eh?

This is a bit of a tricky post for me to make in all honesty, Barver, because I admit I might be suffering from a full-on bout of 'well meaning naivety'. There might very well be good reasons for people asking for all that money, though admittedly I was more talking about pirate ROMs then prototypes. I mean, atop of the reasons you described, they might need to feed themselves, pay for rent, or cover another one of life's many expenses.  >_<

But I dunno, it's for the very same reasons, that I'd RELEASE a ROM for free. Video games, let's admit it, are damn expensive these days. I mean, y'can buy the actual cartridges and the consoles but that's expensive too. Till you can afford those things yourself, I'll be damned if I keep a rare game from you. Emulators and ROMs allow us to test a game out before we buy, to entertain us when we've no money to spare on entertainment and, for me, to introduce you to things you never thought existed. If I were to ask for money, it'd be a donation box and that'd be that. ;)

I suppose that's all I have to say as I pretty much agree with everything else you say, man, though I do have a few things to finish up with:

1. Yes, I can agree people generally don't give ROMs the appreciation they deserve. Especially when they can't be arsed to do try a simple Google search before asking if we could just send them the ROM.
2. As for preservation, well, I suppose I myself believe a ROM can be better preserved if it's shared out among many resources rather then just being stored in my hard drive or cloud storage.  :\

So yep, that's all I can say about the subject. Feel free to disagree of course, as you said, we're free to have our own opinions. :thumb:  But I must say, it's been nice to have the opportunity to stretch my debating muscles there.  :P

1942 for the NES. It's way too slow, they replaced the whistles from the original with annoying beeps, and everything flickers too much.
^Agreed. That's really all there is to say. Just. Agreed.

Though if I may mention, the C64 port of 1942 was kickass.

We're bootleg enthusatics, Rob.
We're ALL got a bit of the Panda in us.  :pandaaway:

But yes, anyways, something a bit more on topic, I know how you kinda feel, Barver. I can't say I totally understand this mindset which I've been told exists where people get the game, dump the game and then hoard it to themselves or try to sell the ROM off. It just seems...well...totally against the spirit of this thing.

And it makes me a s/maaaaad panda. :pandamad:

Alright then, man. :D I can wait. :)

As for sending it off to someone, hell, I don't know how far away we are from one another but if you really can't get anywhere with it I'll give it a good bash myself. I'll even pay for it, just thought I'd put it out there. :3

but anyway, good luck! (You'll probably need it)
Hooboy, do I believe you there.  :P

I admit, the moment I look at pages like the one on Programmer-Net, my mind automatically blanks out for the most part. I'll have to put some time aside so I can give it a proper look.

But yes, thanks for the lil snippets of advise, taizou! It won't be easy, I know. But, as I believe an old turn of phrase goes (and correct me if I'm wrong, it's been known to happen): "It's not about where we end up, it's the journey we made getting there." ;)

Might not sound like much in regards to ROM dumping to most of you, but to me? It simply means I'm damn gunna keep trying when I have it in my power to do so!

Pirate Talk / ROM dumping; advice for a soon to be newbie
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:48:39 PM »
Well, as the topic title states, I'm about to get my hands a little dirty with some ROM dumping because I, like many of you, have actually started to look for and buy these wonderful trainwrecks.

As such, I've sent off for a GB Transferer II from Taiwan to get myself started and it should be here in a couple of weeks or so. But till then, I have to ask, are there any tips any of you could give me? I'm not as up on all this Hex editing stuff and similar such things as you are, I'm something of a layman, you might've noticed. xD

Once more for luck and then I think I'll stop posting these up on here, I'd hate to pagestretch.  >_>

At this point, I've hit my stride and there's not much more to say then that, my friends. What fun. :D

EDIT: Oh wow, it started a new post. I was expecting it to just keep adding onto my previous one. x3

Pirate Talk / Searching for some fonts found in pirates
« on: September 09, 2012, 12:04:09 PM »
Oh thank you, thank you thank you thank you! You've made me a very happy man. :D

But yes, I'd put up the page, they really are quite common fonts as we both know and, well, if PCPaint is up there, Deluxe Paint II should be too, even if it was made by that maniacal mainstream monstrosity that is known as EA.  /:)

As for the dev kits, it seems likely enough. If it were me, I'd grab fonts from the easiest possible source. What better place then from some graphics programs? Saves plenty of time, I can tell ya.

Pirate Talk / Searching for some fonts found in pirates
« on: September 09, 2012, 06:53:32 AM »
Well, as the topic title suggests, I'm looking for a couple of fonts found in a couple of Yong Yong and Ei-How Yang titles, to name but a few places where I've seen these pop up (I've even seen some in legit games).

I've grown rather fond of the fonts used for Green Hill and Zone (the number 1 is pretty snazzy too though I suspect it's the same font) and would LOVE to be able to use them myself for...well...pretty much anything.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has a certain fondness for these fonts so if anyone can help out that'd be awesome. :D

Thanks.  ^_^

Man, thanks for this, you never know what you might need a metric ton of MIDIs for. cool:

Also, color me nostalgic, but sometimes, I dunno, MIDIs are just damn nice to listen too. Sometimes over the originals they're usually based on. But that might be just me.
I agree. Why do you think I have so many?
This is a very good point. xD

Well then, sir, you've fine taste and I salute you. :D
