on a related note, here's something interesting that came up recently -
https://fugu.cafe/talks/10829a New Star branded Famiclone, but on the built-in menu screen it's credited to "Electrical & Mechanical Department 46" which was apparently part of the Chinese military industrial complex at the time.. so I guess New Star was either a military-owned/backed enterprise or at least cooperating with them. Puts an interesting new spin on what seemed like just an average shanzhai famiclone company.
They apparently released two Famiclones and were working on a Mega Drive clone but Sega put a stop to that.
