Game Boy / Super Mario DX for GBA
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:15:36 PM »
Okay, so I'm really late to the party... But man, that music in Mario DX is seriously screwed, especially the bit at 5:30, euck. It just sustains a note that sounds like an old cumpter dying. It's a shame, the actual tune itself doesnt seem too bad if it wasn't butchered up so badly.

As far as gameplay, there's not much to say besides that it looks pretty awful to control. Mario's physics are so crucial, and it's what pirates always get wrong... Super Mario World NES with the yusuplaz game genie code is the only thing even close to 'acceptable' i've seen so far.

Famicom/NES / Where to find some pirate cartridges?
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:39:30 AM »
Thanks you guys for all the links and suggestions, and the info about Agents. I think last night I was looking at some Polish site that had photos of pirate carts, but they weren't actually for sale, I was just half asleep :p

Wow, I didn't realize VR had shut down, it must have happened within the last 2 weeks or so. Damn, that's a step backwards, but oh well.

The Big Old Arcade / Worst ports of games to other consoles
« on: September 28, 2012, 09:40:59 PM »
I think 'Doom' and 'Street Fighter II' take the cake when it comes to which games have been raped by and tossed back and forth between companies to get it on every platform in existance. 'Doom' on SNES, 32x, GBA = Awful as puke. 'DoomDS' could have been a brilliant idea, since it actually could have run similar to the PC version, but these companies often don't see the obvious.

Street Fighter II on the ZX spectrum, Amiga, hell even the DOS versions (just to name a very small few, there are about 30 billion clones out there) are just abominations. Awful music, non-existant gameplay.. if the fighter is moving at 4 FPS, its a stretch even calling it a fight. The pirated NES versions (Master Fighter II and Street Fighter III) are, and I quote, "Miyamotoesque" compared to 95% of 'official' ports.

If you aren't playing Street Fighter II on a SNES, Genesis or real Arcade machine, you're not even playing SFII since the same skills don't apply.

Famicom/NES / Where to find some pirate cartridges?
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:15:10 PM »
Well, there have been a few pirate carts floating around on eBay, and there is the usual selection of junk from Volumerates.. But have any other websites popped up that are selling Famicom cartridges? I found a forum talking about this website "NDScardsale" where they were getting cartridges that sounded like a mix between Volumerates carts, and other equally new, but more durable/reliable ones as well that cost a tad more. I would love to get a few decent multicarts, all of mine are flimsy junk.

Anyone know where I should be looking? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's spent countless hours scouring the web to no avail.. All these Russian and Polish acution sites with DKC4 and EWJ3 cartridges seem like such a tease, if only PayPal was truly global, pirate carts could finally lose their inflated value and be sold for what they're really worth.. But now I'm ranting :P

Famicom/NES dumps / CaH4e3's Dumps
« on: September 28, 2012, 01:30:17 PM »
Super Maruo.. I just saw this cart on eBay as well for over $100. Stupid price for a stupid game, I managed to find Master Fighter 2 and Street Fighter III for cheap on ebay a while back, it cost wasy less and was far more worth it.. At least it's cool to have an 8 bit backport. Everyone else has already said it, but these 'adult' NES games are completely laughable. Honestly the best I've seen are the anime chicks in AV Girl Fighting when you win a round.. The old man ragtime music made me laugh my ass off when I first heard it ages ago...

Pirate Talk / Your Collection? (Carts, Consoles, Anything)
« on: September 28, 2012, 01:04:26 PM »
Those are some pretty awesome collections! (Especially Cheetah's famicom carts, a few really cool ones in there)

I have some pirated GBA and Color carts, but I didn't think they were worth mentioning. All the 'Mario Advance' titles, on cartridges that just say "GameADVANCE" / Transparent blue GBC carts that just say "GAME". All pirated carts of licensed games.

I have a few other weird things too -
"Funstation 3 Famiclone" from Volumerates. It sucks. Runs at PAL speed, glitchy, horrible music, not worth the pennies I paid for it. the cartridges are OK-ish, but the console really blows, not to mention the controllers are tiny with cords about 2 feet long. I'd grade it a D just because I like owning a shitty Dendy-like famiclone. :P

"Hyperkin brand Top-Loading NES clone" - Advertised/pictured as Yobo brand by the ebay seller, but it's hyperkin brand. I'm sure the manufacturers are somehow linked, but I'm a little annoyed about that sicne Yobo stuff always seems a bit better. It works fine, won't run Castlevania 3, but works fine with all my other NES games and my pirate carts. The included controllers and AV cables are usable, but thankfully it takes real NES controllers which are 9000 times better. The audio is noticably muffled but acceptable. I'd give it a C+.

"FC Mobile II" by Hyperkin, the handheld NES.
The screen is small, but very bright. It adds a dithering effect when you play games on the small screen since the resolution is being scrunched, but it looks fine and text is still easy to read. It includes 2 wiresless controllers (they look like SNES controllers) but they really suck, the buttons and D-Pad all sink in and are unresponsive. As for the buttons and D-pad on the unit itself, they're very tight and responsive and have a lot of resistance, which is a good thing. The AV output is the best I've ever seen from a famiclone, as well as the audio. It works with the honeybee, of course, and the battery life is great too (4 AA batteries), my only real gripe with this is that I got a faulty one which I had to send back to get one that actually worked right  :nono:  But overall I'd say it gets a B. At least 2 player is possible even if the controllers suck.

"FC 16 GO" by Yobo Gameware, the handheld SNES.
This one looks like an overgrown DS, which is awesome. The flipscreen is large enough, durable (survived a high speed fall) and about as bright as the FC Mobile II's. The AV out looks exactly like the SNES, maybe *slightly* brighter but I honestly can't tell the difference. The Audio is spot on, again I can't tell any difference from a real SNES console. The D-Pad on the unit itself is pretty good, I can use it in fighting games now that it's worn in, but it took some using before the D pad stopped being too stiff. The face buttons are excellent. The L and R buttons are pretty sucky, but they've yet to break on me after 3 years of regular use. The 2 Wireless SNES controllers are awesome, very responsive and firm. The D-Pad is awesome in terms of gameplay, but digs into your thumb more than the real SNES controllers do, noticable in fighting games. Once again the face buttons are perfect, as are the L and R buttons. (all these wireless controllers take 2 Triple A's, by the way) This thing won't run Mario RPG or Dragonball Z: Hyper Dimension, and it doesn't work properly with the Game Genie, but it runs DooM, Starfox, Wolf3D and Megaman X2, so it is acceptable in terms of compatability. The fact that it has a built in rechargable battery is a big bonus. Overall it gets an A- just because I wanted Mario RPG, and less thumb blisters

"RetroPORT" by TTX Tech/RetroBit. A black cartridge that allows NES games to be played through a SNES. It's a famiclone on a chip, in an SNES cartridge in other words. It requires its own AV out, the SNES just acts as a power source and controller input. A and B are mapped to A and B, which makes sense and works well enough. The signal out is noticabley darker than a real NES. The sound is also audibly muffled. Once again, Castlevania 3 is glitched beyond recognition. Plays all my other NES and Pirate carts just fine, with occasional audio glitches, but nothing too bad. Also it works with a SuperAdvantage plugged in as a controller, and works through the FC 16 GO. I'd give it a B-.

"RetroGEN" by TTX and RetroBit which is essentially the same thing, but instead of NES, you can now play Genesis or Megadrive games through your SNES. Once again, it has it's own AV output since its just a Genesis on a chip. It has a switch on the side with 4 region selections - NTSC, Pal EU, NTSC JP, and Pal A. From what I can tell, Pal A is never used. Genesis games work fine on NTSC, but most PAL games actually only start when it is still set to NTSC as well. Certain Megadrive games need to be set to "Pal EU" to start, the side effect being that the music plays faster than it's supposed to. Every cartridge I've tested, the music is always in key and the sound effects are perfect, a rare treat among Genesis clones, even if the music will sometimes be sped up in Megadrive games. I've yet to find a game it won't work with, it plays Castlevania: Bloodlines, Sonic & Knuckles, Aladdin and Marble Madness all fine, just to name a few popular titles. Sometimes, when there are a lot of bright colors on screen, the image distorts at the top of the screen, or the image shifts downward about an inch. This isn't too severe or my TV (a CRT) but it's noticable and weird, but it doesn't happen often. Overall, since the SNES controller is far superior to the Genesis controller, I use this more than my Genesis now. Naturally, it also works with the SuperAdvantage, and works through the FC 16 GO. It's a very awesome little adapter. It gets an A-, just because of the region and music wackyness.

I've collected a enourmous heap of video game stuff over the years. I know you guys also have some weird Famiclones, I'm always interested in finding more stuff. I definitely need to stop being lazy and take pictures of all my various stuff  :pandahappy:

Pirated Game Museum / Most amusing pirate cover/labels you've seen?

I forget if this one's on here already, but it deserves to posted twice anyway because of the lack of attention to detail. The Chinese title might as well say Somari.

[/quote]Yes! I was looking for this label art and haven't found it again until now.. Kart Fighter.. Bare Knuckle. Seriously, lawl.

Locoman? (oops, now I see it's 'locoworld') If that was unintentional, it's that much more brilliant. Seems like the title for a fan made Spanish translation :D

I need to rant a little, because no matter how many pirate carts I see, I still can't make sense of it. That 1-in-1.. As Qiezei said.. Seriously?! I often wonder if the designers of these labels legitimately have mental issues. Have they ever seen a real cartridge? Do they not know what is expected on label art? It seems so much more obvious to just use the standard Famicom cart template, like most early pirates did, even if it is altered slighly you're far more likely to convince someone in the 90's that it's not a knockoff. They're in it to make quick money, but their products are 3 minutes of MSPaint away from being tenfold more convincing.

The bad translations, I get. But what in the holy mother of ass is the point of spending time designing a Kart Fighter label with Bare Knuckle artwork? There is no mistranslation that can account for something so... absurd!!

1993-1999 / Super Mario World NES: Looking for a code..
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:01:20 AM »
The title says it all - I have a copy of SMW NES, and naturally it ends halfway through. I remember using a Game Genie code to walk past the 4th castle and explore the unfinished final half of the game.. Does anyone happen to know this code? I've hunted around and I cant find anything ;-;

Pirate Talk / Your Collection? (Carts, Consoles, Anything)

I know a lot of us are pirate enthusiasts, so I figured I'd ask what cartridges have you all have had the luck of coming accross!
Finding these things can take a lot of patience, especially if youre located somewhere like Australia, but the wait is always worth it, I find :somari:

Anyway, Here's my collection as of now-

Famicom:
-Super Mario World (cart JY-028)
-Mortal Kombat II 9 Peoples (The Hummer Team one, cart NT316)
-Master Fighter II (YOKO Soft)
-Dragonball Z Super Butoden 2 (Cart D-B1)
-Street Fighter III (The well made one with 9 players, no branding on the cart)
-Super 3-in-1 with Harry's Legend, Somari, and Mario 2 (Which is called "Super Mario Sonic" for some stupid reason. It says K3H01 in the menu.)
-2 crappy volumerates 4-in-1s, they're nothing special.
And a honeybee adapter that allows them all to play in my SNES.

Reproductions / Cart Mods:
-Kart Fighter
-Earthworm Jim 3
-SMB2 Japan
-A volumerates 64-in-1 PCB used in a 3rd party NES converter, housed in an NES game's plastic shell. I did this mod myself :yay: It doesn't boot up on my real NES but it works on all clones.

Gameboy Color/Advance:
Super Fighters 99 (titled KoF 2000 on the cart)
+Various Mario Advance GBA clones

I also have a pretty extensive collection of legit rare SNES/NES/Genesis games, but I'm mainly focused on pirates. Speaking of legit rarities... about 2 years ago I sold my old copy of 'Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak!' for a measly $10, not knowing it was a rarity.. Looking on eBay now, I'm kicking myself, but oh well

(Sorry if this has been asked before. I didn't know where to put this, I figured it was somewhat community oriented so I stuck it here :P )

Edit: Woohoo! I won a bid on a cartridge of MK2 Special! When it arrives I'll put up a picture. I bet it's the exact same as the SMW, DBZ2 and Someri 3-in-1 cartridges.

Mega Drive/Genesis / Dragon Ball Final Bout (MD)
« on: September 16, 2012, 11:30:46 PM »
Im sorry for this really late bump, but I just found this, and the SNES variant is just adding to the amazement/confusion..

If this has already been discussed, Im sorry for re-hashing it. I have a theory that this game, Pocket Monster, Top Fighter MK VIII, and Super Donkey Kong 99 are all made by the same developer. They all include backgrounds that "mirror" to repeat, they all freeze objects on screen when fading in/out to black, and the stiffness of controls is practically identical. In addition, the music all sounds the exact same.

Has a name for this developer shown up in any of the ROMs, by chance? If so maybe we can add some clarification on the Bootleg Games Wiki. (Also I've noticed there's no page for Pocket Monster 2 on the Megadrive, but I'm not so great at writing out those pages)

This is really interesting stuff, and I am a big DBZ fan :P

I know I'm late to the party, but this is incredibly amazing MLX! He seems like a nice guy, and I'm a huge fan of his Famicom ports. Willing to share information knowing you could have been a 'spy' from another big corporation? Takes courage on his part.

Amazing stuff!

Bootleg Bazaar / SELLING: Famicom to NES Converter
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:28:16 PM »
Hey everyone, I have something for sale today - a light green Famicom to NES converter. I only recently purchased this, but having the HoneyBee around makes it practically useless to me. :P

I'm shipping this thing anywhere in the world for $30 USD. First come, first serve :)

I used a Game Genie to get the NES to quit doing the stupid blinking light thing. To be 100% sure it will work, you'll have to do that 10nes chip mod, which apparently isn't too hard. Or you can just use clone hardware if you have it.

the HoneyBee has a ribbon to make it easy to remove from the console... This lime green one does not, so you'll have to tape some string to it or something along those lines.

I only accept PAYPAL. Contact me for further info.

Heres a video for clarification/so you can see what you're getting:
