Title: Earthworm Jim 3 by Waixing?
Post by: taizou on May 02, 2011, 06:45:28 PM
you may have seen this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhjTFQlNT2Y) I posted from a famiclone manufacturer containing a game called "Happy Biqi: World Flghter", a platformer using Earthworm Jim's game mechanics but seemingly not a hack of any of the three known Earthworm Jim pirates.

well I just came across this post from Kamming with an old Waixing product list: http://hi.baidu.com/kamming/blog/item/2c593295d27de00b7bf4800e.html (http://hi.baidu.com/kamming/blog/item/2c593295d27de00b7bf4800e.html)
it contains several games missing from Waixing's current game list on their website, Kamming specifically mentions these few: 猫王 ("Mao Wang" literally Cat King but it also seems to be a common Chinese nickname for Elvis Presley)、地球虫三 ("Di Qiu Chong San" literally Earth Worm 3)、夜明珠 ("Ye Ming Zhu" aka Pearl, screenshots/etc here (http://fctobira.gozaru.jp/yomeisyu.htm))、屠龙刀 ("Tu Long Dao" aka Dragon Knife, now dumped)、快乐比奇 ("Kuai Le Bi Qi", Happy Biqi) & some educational carts.

so could this mean Waixing made their own port of one of the Earthworm Jim games, and Happy Biqi was based on that?

That totally screams out EWJ.

They probably did port Earthworm Jim 2 (I'm surprised, I would expect more people to port over the first one since it's more popular) and then just hacked it into Happy Biqi. (Although it does remind me of Shin-Shin's EWJ2 for some reason)

I don't know what to say :x All I know is I want to find this Waixing version now and see if it's something we already have or not. The fact they call it EWJ3 seems like it means it's the same thing as the NT one, unless NT also decided to use that same name by coincidence.

The character running when in standing pose is like in EWJ2. And the jump is about at the same speed. Maybe it's a new engine or it reuse the EHY engine, I don't know. Well I don't see why they would call it EWJ3 because there would be already the Hummer one.

well Hummer's EWJ3 was released in late 97 (according to the wiki anyway, I dunno where that information came from) and Waixing's earliest games that I know of were released in 1996. so Waixing's might even have come before Hummer's.
according to its copyright registration, Happy Biqi was originally released on the 1st October 1996. so I guess Waixing's did come first.

Well I guessed late 1997 because of the NSF, the id it has and MK4.

oh by the way, if anyone else wants to look up any other waixing copyright records i've wikificated them here (http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Fuzhou_Waixing_Computer_Science_%26_Technology_Co.,LTD/Copyright_List) for convenience and whatnot. EWJ isnt there, i checked.

Wow, so there may be another take on EWJ out there... In fact Id be willing to bet on it being discovered some time soon. Where would I be able to find the EHY versions? Never seen or played that before either.. lol I was just playing the Hummer one a few minutes ago though. Its actually really well made, plays a lot like the SNES one bit with a bit higher gravity. (and Im assuming that if you play in PAL mode, that makes it even more accurate)

Well the "EHY" version can be found on most complete ROM sites. Btw, only 3 EHY games plays "faster" in PAL mode: MM7, Toy Story and SDK. The others do not have such programming.

I wouldn't bet on it being discovered soon, i't's stayed out of our attention for this long, doubt it's going to be showing up anywhere anytime soon :/

What is this EHY version? We're talking about a port of the first EWJ, right? Cuz I only know of Hummer Team's version.

i'm not too familiar with the original games so i dunno which is a port of which. but there are three pirate EWJ's that I know of - Hummer's EWJ3, Super Game's EWJ2 & Shin-Shin/EHY/ex-sachen people's EWJ2. And now this Waixing one.

anyway, you never know what might turn up.. at least now we know it exists we can keep an eye out for it.

Ah, this EHY Earthworm Jim is EWJ2. I thought there actually was another port of the first game I wasn't aware of :P

well look what i found. ;D http://www.mediafire.com/?yeps7oespndy5q9 (http://www.mediafire.com/?yeps7oespndy5q9)

Its pretty good for a Waixing platformer I think.

I guess just like that Super Donkey Kong game they made, it's supposed to be a loose port. Some of the characters look pretty funny, like instead of Psycrow at the end you're racing a regular bird lol. The only track from EWJ I recognize too is in the puppy bouncing levels.

Now I wonder if there's a different version with different graphics or not. There must be an EWJ3, but do they use these same graphics? :X

Well the game itself is definitely a complete ripoff of Earthworm Jim 2, although if I remember correctly the staircase level is supposed to be a bonus stage. (I don't remember the original game very well) The sound engine sounds like the one used in Chengdu's games and Waixing's earlier games and one of the sound effects sounds like it was taken from the keyboard typing game off the keyboard Famiclones.

...And they left the salamander level in! I don't recall either of the existing EWJ2 pirates including that. Wow. Of course it controls horribly (what, salamanders can't move while floating?), but still.

I'm pretty sure this game is a rebranded version of Earthworm Jim 3, the title screen kind of looks like it was made up in 5 minutes.

BTW, KingPepe beat the game earlier and mentioned that there's some credits in Chinese. Not sure why he hasn't bothered posting this yet but whatever.

Now I'd like to see a dump of Monkey King, seeing as that looks like a poor man's Batman: Return of the Joker IMO.

And yeah, forgot to mention the ending here.

The elevator stage was mandatory to get to the 2nd half of the first level IIRC, just like in this pirate.
