Title: Soul Edge VS Samurai Spirits ROM
Post by: Azathoth on December 24, 2011, 12:49:37 PM
Soul Edge VS Samurai Spirits aka Soul Blade VS Samurai Shodown aka Final Samurai V

Copy protection routines removed by Eke-Eke. Although it's patched and works on emulators, it will not work properly on flash cartridges or copiers.

Wasn't this released already, or am I thinking of that SNES version?

Curiously, on the Mac OS version of Kega Fusion, this ROM resets after the announcer yells "Fight!". At least it works in the Windows version...

Edit: Never mind, it's working fine for me now in the Mac version of Kega. No idea what was going on there! Maybe I just need sleep. :)

Ah. Great to see it working now. :)

I'm assuming Samurai Shodown 2 came first, then this game, in terms of release.

When running this on my copy of Kega Fusion, the game just restarts to the title screen when the fight is about to start. Not sure if anyone else is getting this or is it just me

Whatever flavor of Gens that Eke-Eke works on (Gens32 Surreal, I think) the latest version of it should support this game unpatched.

I've just slapped a few things onto the ROM based on the protection routines he found when updating the emulator to emulate the copy protection natively. It's not completely fixed; if it was then it would work on flash cartridges and copiers, and I guess these bugs are probably what's causing it to hang/crash it some emulators.

So the way I'm looking at this I'm placing this around late '97. The engine is a bit more polished than Soul Blade or Samurai Spirits II, but not nearly as good as KoF '98. Not sure if it came before or after MMPR. You'll also notice some fonts and HUD items that are carried over (or copied from?) X-Men VS Street Fighter for SNES.

I can post the unpatched dump also, I reckon it's supported by Eke on the newest version of Gens32 Surreal.

The ending is a static "Congratulations!" screen with a line of the SS referees holding their arms up. I'm pretty sure it's the same ending on both the MD and SNES versions.
