BootlegGames Wiki / Breasts
« on: October 29, 2010, 06:56:21 PM »
i was just about to start an article on Hacker International based on the Wikipedia one, but the screenshot there has kinda brought up an issue. namely tits. they do appear in quite a few unlicensed games. so are we gonna be uncensored like wikipedia? or do we want to be family friendly? i honestly don't mind either way, just wondering what everyone else thinks.

1993-1999 / origin of Somari's title screen
« on: October 26, 2010, 04:57:39 PM »
on the wiki we've got Mario Teaches Typing as the most likely source for the Mario on Somari's title screen, but to me the Somari Mario looks, if anything, more like official Nintendo artwork than the Teaches Typing one. so could there be another, official illustration out there that both games based their own Mario on?

2000-present / Nanjing takes on V.Fame at their own game
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:28:27 PM »
maybe this is common knowledge. but hey. :D I just noticed it. Namely that Nanjing's 2004 NES RPG, "Shui Hu Shen Shou" is nothing more than a ripoff of Vast Fame's 2001 GBC RPG .. which also happens to be titled "Shui Hu Shen Shou". Uncanny eh? I can't believe that never occurred to me until now.

comparisons from the first few mins:

..momotaro?

all the sprites are different for some reason. even though other graphics made it intact

Nanjing's really benefits from the higher resolution here - the mountain is covered by text boxes in V.Fame's for all but about 5 seconds of this scene.

from screenshots Nanjing's doesnt look too bad.. simplified in some places, but actually better in others thanks to the NES' higher resolution. but obviously thats not the whole story. Nanjing's also lacks the intro from the original, lots of animations are missing, and, of course, the music - V.Fame is (ahem) famed for its music. Nanjing isnt. What you get in Nanjing's port is one battle tune, and one other thats played absolutely everywhere else. And I havent played either version for more than five minutes, but I'd be very surprised if Nanjing's doesnt become horribly unbalanced later on. (your pokemon monster thing at least has entirely different moves, which doesnt exactly bode well)
so, in conclusion, v.fame wins. this time, every time, forever.

Game Boy / Vast Fame's cheat cartridge
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:34:21 PM »
theres something in GoodGBX called "Fire Bird GB Cheat Code Card (Unl) [c]", the internal ROM of a cheat cartridge - obviously not much use on its own. but its by Vast Fame! the header says "Vast Fame 1.0", which also shows up on the code list screen (it'd normally show the header name from the inserted game, but when its emulated it acts like it's inserted into itself). and the icon to start a game is a cartridge with "VF" on it. the included codes are mostly for licensed games but theres a few for some of V.Fame's own games too. And Sonic 6.

but has anyone ever seen one of these? i'm kind of interested to know what it looks like now.

GBA:
ST060112C Ge Dou Jian Shen

im guessing the format is ST-YYMMXXXL, where L is E/C for English/Chinese, YY=year, MM=month, XXX is a sequential ID no. which would mean Sintax made at least 78 84! 93!! games. and that probably doesn't even include their GBA stuff. so even given their habit of rehashing old shit, thats a lot of damn games out there. And i want to find them!
ooh yeah, one other thing about Sintax. Even though their first known games seem to have been released in 2002, this old version of their website:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030603184947/www.st168.net/esintax.htm
says they've existed in Taiwan for over 10 years before focusing on the China market, and that they have "experiences more than ten years in TVGAME(GB/GBA/FC/SFC/SEGA) designing,  developing and hardwares producing."

a Taiwanese trademark search does indeed reveal this:
http://tmsearch.tipo.gov.tw/TIPO_DR/servlet/InitLogoPictureWordDetail?sKeyNO=083067692
a trademark registered by Sintax in Taiwan from late 1994, with an address in (where else) Taichung!

so they clearly weren't bullshitting when they said they'd been around for 10 years, or that they had Taiwanese origins.. and itd explain their ties to Gamtec and Vast Fame if they started out as part of that whole Taichung cluster of companies. question is, just what the hell were they doing until 2002? I guess with them saying "hardwares producing" they might just have been a generic clonemaker, but nothing like that has ever turned up (to my knowledge) with their name on it.
oh yeah, one final thing. THIS.
http://popbuying.com/detail.pb/sku.2.8__LCD_GBA_NEG_GEO_GBC_SFC_MES_Emulator_Game_Console_Media_Player-28794
check out the box! its even written with the same chinese characters. same company? yknow.. i hope so. it'd be nice if those bastards were still out there somewhere. even if they don't have a website anymore.

Game Boy / New Game Color Advance/(N) company
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:07:27 PM »
okay this is a completely uninteresting thing i just noticed :D but i'm gonna post it here anyway in case it leads to some kind of fantastic discovery later on.

heres my Pokemon Sapphire box front and back - on the front it has that fairly unusual "New Game Color Advance" logo which also appears on Rockman Zero here, and theres also an N in a circle in the bottom left which I'm pretty sure does not appear on any official game. and on the back theres copyrights from Croc 2 at the bottom and that "Advance" logo in the top right.

now I also have this pirate copy of the GBC Metal Gear Solid - its a pretty cool pirate, the cart is white and it has a nintendo seal of quality embossed on the back, but the actual game is unchanged from the original. and that one *also* has the (N) on the front and the Croc 2 copyrights on the back (as well as the same fake looking seal of quality and the same misspelling of "seal"), although with the standard Game Boy Color logo instead of the NGCA one. Rockman Zero does still seem to have the Croc copyrights but some other stuff has been removed, like the seal, Natsume logo and THQ's address, and it doesnt have the (N) but it *does* have the Advance logo on the back, so that probably came after Sapphire.

so it seems to be kinda an interesting case of a company that started out making standard pirates, then moved into publishing pirate originals under the "New Game Color Advance" name.. i wonder if there are any more out there?

BootlegGames Wiki / Undumped games list
« on: September 17, 2010, 02:13:44 PM »
i've started a list of undumped pirate games on the wiki, just to keep track of them all - its easy to forget whats out there sometimes when the only evidence of their existence is a chinese forum post here, or an old auction listing there. and i think a wiki article would probably be the best way to do it, so anyone can add stuff they know of.

my definition of "undumped" for now includes stuff that's dumped but only shared within a certain group (like sky league), because it might as well be undumped as far as everyone else is concerned. but mention that in the notes column.

anyway there are only five games on it at the moment, obviously tons of stuff still needs adding, but its here:

Game Boy / Shaoling Legend
« on: September 08, 2010, 06:45:33 AM »
i just got a Sintax game i've never heard of before (much thanks to codeman38 for the tip) - its called "Shaoling Legend: Hero, the saver" on the label and "Fantasic ShaoLin Kungfu" on the title screen. its a beat em up, basicallly the same engine as True Three Kingdoms and stuff, but the music is stolen from one of the KOF games this time. and its pretty good! i'll get some pics and stuff later, maybe a video. but im gonna be away for a few days, so probably not until tuesday/wednesday.

BootlegGames Wiki / Mega Soft
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:22:01 PM »
i'm thinking of renaming the Mega Soft article to NTDEC  - as far as I can work out they were the same company, based on the same floor of the same building at least. and after 1991 they seemed to drop the Mega Soft name anyway, all their original games just credited NTDEC (or Caltron) in 92 and early 93, then Asder after that, even though they were made by the same developers. any thoughts?

1984-1992 / sachen's advice corner
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:51:58 PM »
Strategist is a card game thats obscure even by Sachen standards, and there are two versions, one with an intro, one without.
the intro looks like this:

but I just found out it actually has nothing to do with the game - according to Google the Chinese text translates to "Do not abuse amphetamine". which is kinda odd.

1984-1992 / Jing Ke Xin Zhuan
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:21:22 PM »
has anyone played much of this game? I'd quite like to finish it - since it's (I think) a completely original game, and its in Chinese, I think it'd be quite likely to have real names in the credits. so it may be a way to find out the real name of, at the very least, a Someri/Hummer music guy, seeing as it uses the SF2 sound engine.

but slightly embarrasingly i'm down at the first hurdle - I can't figure out how to get out of the damn town you start in.

1993-1999 / Ei-How Yang, Shin-Shin etc etc
« on: August 20, 2010, 12:43:30 AM »
im just trying to make some sense of the whole EHY/Shin-Shin/etc business, because. hell.

heres what I kinda think I know, feel free to correct me if im wrong:
 • Ei-How Yang (ex-Sachen, but mainly a Gameboy programmer there) programmed Contra Spirits, Toy Story, Super Donkey Kong, Pocahontas, Mickey Mania. this is basically the only named person we know of working for this company/companies.
 • Someone else (or multiple people) programmed SDK2, EWJ2, Chu Da D, Panda Prince, Bao Qing Tian, The Dragon.
 • IMO the graphics person is the same across *at least* Mickey Mania 7, SDK2, EWJ2, Panda Prince based on the way the graphics are ripped. Bao Qing Tian and The Dragon could be the same person too, because leftovers from the Dragon appear in both BQT and Panda Prince. I'm unsure about EHY's other games and Chu Da D.
 • All of these games share fonts all over the damn place. Could point to a common graphics artist for all of them.
 • Chu Da D and The Dragon share music and sound effects. Chu Da D especially sounds just like a Sachen game, so I'd guess its was an ex-Sachen person. BQT sounds like the same person too, as does Contra Spirits.
 • some other games sound completely different though, like SDK2, Mickey Mania and Toy Story, despite the latter using Contra Spirits' level clear music; my guess would be that the actual musician was different for Toy Story, but EHY himself took the track from Contra.
 • They probably both used the same sound engine though, even if they used it differently.
What I don't know is if all these people were actually working for the same company; EHY might have had his own team, and the other people had their separate team, and occasionally they'd share resources/staff because they were all based around the same part of Taiwan (like Gamtec and Chuanpu) and a bunch of them probably knew each other from working together at Sachen. Or they might have all been working for the same developer, and its only EHY and the other programmer's differing styles that make the games seem so different.

the other problem I have is what this company/team/whatever was actually called (either the one that didn't employ Yang, or the one that employed everyone, depending on which of my theories is true.. unless its neither of course :D). i'd quite like to add them to the wiki but its kinda hard to start a wiki article on something you don't have a name for. I could call it Shin-Shin but i'm 99% sure that's only a publisher/distributor. Same goes for pretty much every other company named in any of these games. The only one I can't account for is Tony Tech, credited in The Dragon. So I guess that could be it.. or it could just be another distributor. I dunno.

and, of course, all that's without even getting started on Sachen's GBC games or Yong (bastard) Yong.
oh yeah, and I have the credits for Bao Qing Tian:
製作人員 Production staff
總監 Director
楊文光 Yang Wenguang
企劃 Planning
楊文光 Yang Wenguang
程式 Program
吳振宏 Wu Zhenhong
美術 Art
王念珍 Wang Nianzhen
劉瑞慈 Liu Ruici
音樂 Music
王樂禮 Wang Yueli
測試 Test
羅政 Luo Zheng
can't guarantee theyre right, I OCRd them from screenshots of SpaceNinja's ending video. and I guess they arent much use without other games to compare them against. but theyre there if anyone wants them.

2000-present / D-CAT8 8bit Game Console
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:33:42 PM »
this is the D-Cat 8:

a weird handheld famiclone containing a seemingly random mix of original games, hacks and unmodified copies of licensed stuff. its also known as Vangard 8bit GameCORE which looks a bit better and has a website thats far too nice for such a shitty product, but its all the same hardware. the screen is low res, one of the speakers is fake and theres no cart slot, so you're limited to the 100 games it comes with. which sounds like a lot, but it isnt when most of them suck.

because im bored i'm gonna go through all 100 games on this thing. lets say 20 at a time.
1. Behind Enemy Lines. Graphics hack of super contra. Not too badly done really.
2. Battle Formula. aka Super Spy Hunter. by Sunsoft, unchanged and awesome
3. Super Shrek Bros. exactly what it sounds like. hack of SMB with Shrek, but most other graphics are replaced too. Based on the PAL version possibly, it seems to run faster than normal. Music is the same though, unlike most recent SMB hacks.
4. Scoring - Arkanoid hack. new graphics, music modified so it sucks. but at least there isnt much of it in Arkanoid.
5. Football - Hack of Nintendo's Soccer. terrible music again, team names changed, players are wearing hats
6. Bomb Jack  - Mighty Bomb Jack, unchange
7. Violent - Seicross hack, not too bad. music is the same again
8. Toto - Astro Robo Sasa hack. shit music. main character sprite is stolen from somewhere else i think.
9. Soldier - Sonson hack. completely changed graphics arent too bad, music is terrible again
10. Dragon - Fire Dragon hack. more bad music!
11. Benthal - Pyramid hack. Graphics arent too bad, music is changed but its not horrible like most of these hacks - its a mostly original tune rather than the old one with random notes changed. Might even be taken from somewhere else.
12. Popeye - Unchanged
13. X Racing - Piss poor hack of Zippy Race. bikes changed to cars, all scenery removed in the top-down section, behind-view bit's graphics are completely screwed - they clearly didnt even test that far.
14. Space War - Hack of Exerion. fairly old, its on the Power Joy. reasonable graphics, music is the same, yay.
15. Mars Man - Binary Land hack. music slightly modified but its not too bad.
16. Maze - Pac-man hack, terrible music, ghosts are only slightly different, pacman looks really weird.
17. Tennis - oh you know. nintendo tennis with different graphics and bad music. the umpire is now a worm or something, and there are two of what looks like master higgins from adventure island by the side of the court.
18. Star - stargate hack. music unchanged, graphics are ok but the HUD is removed entirely for some reason.
19. IQ Champion - Really weird game. seems to be original, nothing to do with IQ. you control this thing at the bottom of the screen and shoot insects flying along the top. the insects move down the screen kinda like space invaders but you don't die if they reach the bottom, they just drop jars(?) which restrict your movement. seems like you only die if it fills up with jars completely. and on most of the level intro screens the numbers dont appear properly, but i've seen it on youtube or something on a different famiclone where they show up fine. so they must have just fucked up putting it on this console. this isnt the last time that will happen.
20. Gold Digger - Super Arabian hack. i dunno. the graphics are different yay. the main sprite looks weird doing pretty much anything except walking.

2000-present / JY-130, real JY or not?
« on: August 16, 2010, 02:13:33 PM »
just to continue this from the wiki discussion page:
me

Do we know if the JY-130 cart is actually made by the same JY? I actually have one of those (the first version from 2003, with no year on the label), it doesnt seem like a JY product at all to me, and no other JY product is dated later than 2000. Plus JY IDs were always sequential (more or less), they never used the number of games on a cart as an ID. It could just be some other company that randomly happened upon the two letters "JY" for its ID no, or decided to cash in on the "real" JY's legacy. I could crack it open and take a look at the PCB if that'd clear things up at all.
MLJY

For that kind of talk, it would be easier to use the forums... For me it's more likely it's the same one. JY carts from JY-314 to JY-812 use the same PCB codes to number their boards. I don't know for JY-130 but please do not break the cartridge to see the PCB code. I would be interested to buy it instead of seeing it broken. Recent JY cartridges were MASS produced so they could have win the money without the need to make different ones. And JY-802 was made in 2003. It is included between the JY-314 -> JY-812. So it is the same JY. Also the writing on JY-802 is similar to the old ones (for the ID). I'm pretty sure it's the same JY but they decided to make cheap stuff instead.
me

Well yeah, I don't intend to break it - if I can't open it without damaging the tabs, I won't open it. the lower two seem quite hard to get out with this cart design so I might have to abandon that idea. ill start a topic on the forums if i have any luck though.
well I got it open, and no i didnt break it (I've opened tons of famicom carts over the years and only ever broke one tab, on an extremely shitty multicart)
http://fuji.drillspirits.net/stuff/jy130pcb.jpg
im not familiar with other late JY PCBs so I dunno how that compares to them, but there it is.

JY-805 looks like the same kinda label though. and thats from 2003, but it fits in with the usual JY numbering, so maybe it is the same JY.
