Famicom/NES dumps / 4-in-1 MGC-026?
« on: December 21, 2017, 04:54:54 PM »
FCEUX recently added support for "4-in-1 MGC-026". Is a dump of this available?

I have investigated the issue of the graphical corruption that sometimes occurs in Bolt Fighter. The extracted ROM images are good. But that game suffers from an original bug in the game inadvertently writing garbage to bankswitch registers, causing graphical corruption, at random points in time. Rather than fix the original game bug, the multicart menu program simply disables those bankswitch registers completely! This problem is a bit similar to Nice Code Software games failing to disable the Frame IRQ, for which I included the "[f FrameIRQ]"-suffixed ROM images in my December 10th set of multicart extracts.

The solution is then to add the same register write that disables these bankswitch registers completely to the extracted ROM image (write 0x08 to 0x410B, setting FWEN to 0). I only noticed this problem in Bolt Fighter, so that is the only one for which I am posting a fixed ROM image as of now. Report if you encounter a similar problem in other JungleTac games.

Famicom/NES dumps / MiWi2 (VT168) Dumping Attempt
« on: December 18, 2017, 06:11:18 PM »
There must be one VT168/VT268/VT368/similar system with 512x480 graphics. I have seen a YouTube video (that I cannot find anymore, unfortunately) of a console with such resolution running a high-resolution hack of Chip & Dale and several Sachen games.

As for my two NES-compatible games of unknown hardware, given that the ROM images are 64 MiB in size, and the VT18 only addresses 32 MiB, I guess my next step should be to look out for another banking register. These two games are the first ones that I have encountered that set the CPU5M flag in register $411C, which has existed in the VT18 already. Basically what it does is speed up the CPU from the normal 1.79 MHz to 5.37 MHz, in other words, making the CPU run as fast as the PPU.

Famicom/NES dumps / CaH4e3's Dumps

Do you know what CaH4e3 did to get the CHR data to dump properly? If I remember correctly, you got the PRG data but no CHR data.

You would not have any datasheets of the NES-compatible chips beyond the VT18, which is the latest one available on V.R. Technology's website? Their "Latest News" page indicates that the NES-compatible series goes up to VT32, so I suspect that is what DGUN-2561 and the Lexibook Compact Cyber Arcade use, but I cannot find any description of their registers.

It turns out that I only have two VT168 ROM images besides the VT168 demo ROM --- the ones included in MAME's ROM list ---, and they are for the worst console ever made. I thought I had more, but the dreamGEAR My Arcade Portable Gaming System (DGUN-2561) and Lexibook Compact Cyber Arcade, which I had previously thought to be for VT168, actually seem to run on a VT09-compatible platform and use features that Nintendulator does not emulate yet.

I have already sent a private message to forgotusername. It is good that I have not posted the link publicly though, because I have already noticed an error in at least one extracted JungleTac game that only manifests itself after several minutes of gameplay. Wouldn't want to spread non-working ROM images!

Famicom/NES / Work in Progress: new VT168 emulator
« on: December 18, 2017, 06:17:09 AM »
Great! I considered adding VT168 support to Nintendulator at one point, but decided against it because the VT168 is not directly NES-compatible and thus would require turning the entire emulator core upside down.

I will post the other VT168 ROMs that I have when I get home. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Famicom/NES dumps / The GlukVideo NES Romset
« on: December 17, 2017, 05:39:08 AM »
Skate Boy exists in three versions that only differ in the copyright notice at the title screen (Caltron Ind. Inc, NTDEC, Asder Soft Inc.). I am not sure which one of the three is used on the Gluk Video release. Here is the version that credits Caltron Ind. Inc., which must be the original version.

I don't think that Benico has been ever released in physical form outside of the Asder 20-in-1 multicart. Of course, the same thing was said about J.P. Ronny, and then it did turn up eventually, though not as a Gluk Video release.

You can leave the screwdriver where it is, because I managed to extract all of the JungleTac games from the four multicart games that have been dumped. The difficulty was that instead of setting up the CHR bank base using the normal OneBus register as all other multicarts do, the menu code puts the bank base onto the stack before jumping to an individual game's reset handler. This means that each extracted JungleTac game must have three bytes modified for it to run outside of the multicart.

Once I finish a few other of the remaining non-extracted multicarts, I will send you the link privately, so as to not get those two buffoons too excited. :P

They have been dumped; look for the latest "NoIntro" ROM set. Note that because the games themselves have not been translated into Spanish, you will find most of them under their English names.

Somehow I just became far less inclined to spend any time on this.

"101-in-1 (AT-103)" seems to specifically counteract extraction efforts by having individual games call a routine in the menu code bank. How annoying.
