Bootleg Bazaar / Old Taiwanese Computer Gaming Magazines
« on: November 05, 2015, 03:24:55 AM »
One of my buddies / contacts over here recently hooked me up with a large set of gaming magazines, dating from the late 1980s through the mid 1990s.  This stuff was worthy of being in a library somewhere, imo, as it offers a totally different perspective of what gaming was really like over in Asia (outside of Japan) during the "golden era".  Because I am a nice guy, the price was right, and I also don't want to risk pissing my buddy off, I bought the entire lot of stuff, despite the fact that a small portion of it was computer related (the console games stuff I am keeping for myself).

So I have around 50 different pieces (unless I miscount, it is 53 booklets / magazines) relating to PC gaming during the early 1990s, for the Taiwanese (and sometimes Hong Kong) markets.  These items are incredibly rare, are in excellent condition, and some of the issues seem to be small magazines produced by Softstar (called Softstar Magazine), presumably advertising / reviewing the latest Softstar games (Softstar was a large Taiwanese PC Game Company back in the day).

The problem is, I have no interest in these magazines myself, yet they are of the nature that I am sure someone, somewhere would appreciate them.

Any idea of value?  Any idea where I could market these for sale?  Anyone here interested?

Thanks guys.

P.S.  Everything is in Chinese, of course.

Please correct any wrong information you notice on the wiki. Stating that there are many errors and not doing a thing helps nobody.
If the wiki would stop stealing pictures without crediting sources (or better yet, asking permission first when applicable) and also would stop giving so much attention to fan products (i.e. the wiki page for Metal Force talks about an unauthorized "reproduction" of the game), then maybe I would be more willing to make corrections.  But I hate the way that "collecting" has turned these days, and I personally don't think fan-made fakes should be recognized on an info wiki, and likewise also feel that when swiping pics from others in the community, credit should be provided.
Regarding other errors, I do post questions on here from time to time, with things that I "question".  It would be nice to hear more responses to my questions / doubts, even via pm or skype or whatever.  If I have some doubts, maybe I don't want to just disclose my reasons / train of thought publically.

No idea.  There are tons of mistakes / wrong info in the database though, that is often taken as gospel.

Seems a bit weird that they'd make an alternate version of an existing game for the Taiwanese market, but then given the amount of games that went through unnecessary localisation in North America it shouldn't be too surprising. I imagine most people there still played the Japanese version though considering what piracy was like there.
I don't think it seems so weird at all.  I just discovered today that Hudson hosted the Hudson 7th Caravan World Cup (with PC Engine game Final Soldier) in Taipei, in 1991.  So they were definitely holding activities in that tiny nation.

1984-1992 / C&E's Decathalon
« on: September 27, 2015, 03:48:54 AM »
On the BGW's twitter page, it suggests that C&E developed Decathalon exclusively for American Video Entertainment, but then decided to release it themselves after AVE folded.  For many reasons, this does not seem right to me, and as such, I am curious as to where such information had been heard.
On another note, later I will share why I think this is not the case, but first I want to hear how this rumor was started.

Bump!  Taizo is correct about Kiddy Sun:

HuEra and Era Tech are owned by the same company, Kiddy Sun is a licensed release folks.

Bootleg Bazaar / Which Famiclone to buy?
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:13:43 AM »
What sort of clone are you looking for?

I got rid of most of my "extra" clones, but I still might have one or two lying around that I wouldn't feel terrible about selling.  The problem would be controllers though, as most of the clones I have just came loose, but I might be able to piece something together that doesn't look too bad.

I think more importantly though, is how much you are looking to spend on getting a clone (including shipping cost).  $20?  $50?  $80?

Get an older clone.  The quality is generally better than the newer, NOAC-style stuff.

This game also exists on a multicart.  I found it on one.  I have never seen it as a stand alone cart though.

Pirate Talk / Questions about Sachen

I have a few questions regarding the former Taiwanese company Sachen:

1): Who was the founder/owner?
2): Why it broke?
3): Can it come back?
4): If I want to found a game company, I want to call it Sachen and I want to make a new Q Boy game with official license, would that be legal with the right papers and stuff? If so, how can I find the owner for a ownership and rights transfer?

Thank ya all for your time.   :)
#2.  It was closed down due to a piracy-related charge.

#1, 3, and 4:  Please don't tread on my toes.  I have been working on the Sachen thing for years, don't want someone else to rush in and steal it from me.

Regarding new games, we all remember how great that turned out with Greg Pabich and the Cheetahmen remake.  Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie.

1993-1999 / Hummer Team's Donkey Kong Country 4
« on: June 28, 2015, 12:20:12 PM »
Just got a cartridge of Hummer Team's Donkey Kong Country 4.  It is in a normal black JY-style case.  Instead of being JY-033 or whatever the correct number code is, it has printed on it "EL-033".  Also, EL-033 is printed on the pcb so its official, not just a bootleg.

Anyone know why the difference?  I can't get the cartridge to work, sadly, though.

Bootleg Bazaar / FS/FT: Gowin's Prince Rainbow (Game Boy)
« on: June 06, 2015, 02:28:42 AM »
For sale is Prince Rainbow, by Gowin.  The game can be seen below.

This is a fun shooter, and one of the harder Gowin games to find (GS05), as it is one of the earlier releases.

I am asking $25 shipped for the game, including tracking code, worldwide.  Please PM me if interested.  I will also accept trades, if someone has anything of interest.
