Famicom/NES dumps / VTxx Dumping Thread
« on: January 23, 2018, 12:06:59 PM »
Thumbs Up rebrand and distribute various things like this in the UK, they also sell a 240 in 1 Micro Arcade like the Taikee and one of those non-Famiclone 1.8" handheld games, and some game accessories. Basically the UK equivalent of DreamGEAR, who are less common here.
If anyone is curious, here is a list of all the 200 games on the console (extracted from the ROM because I'm too lazy to type them all out)

Spoiler: click to toggle

Yes, it was based on your suggestion :) Sorry for forgetting the credit! This one is Thumbs Up branded which is the much more common one in the UK, but I think it's identical to the dreamGEAR 200 in 1 plug and play.

Hopefully over the next few weeks, I'll be dumping various VTxx based systems and I thought it would be good to keep them together in a thread.

First of all the 200 in 1 Thumbs Up Retro TV Games, with 200 VT03 delights:

This runs in NewRisingSun2's Nintendulator, EmuVT and I will also add this to MAME.

I wonder if it's the same Game King development team, or another team, doing those games? It's still a possibility I think that some of the Game King developers are now at a new (AFAIK not known) company doing the games for these 1.8" handhelds. So far my dumping of these handhelds has yielded no clues towards any companies or individuals, other than the name "tony".

Famicom/NES dumps / 300-in-1 SY-889 Handheld Dump (VTxx)

It seems VRT must have fixed their sound hardware recently - I decapped the glob top inside and took a macro photo of the die, and it is indeed marked VRT. Still not sure what the part is, maybe a new part they haven't got on their website.

Famicom/NES / Nintendulator with VT03/VT09 support
« on: January 18, 2018, 04:49:23 PM »
Awesome, thanks so much for releasing this! :)
This is running my SY-889 dump perfectly which is awesome. I have two more handhelds with the same architecture in the post to be dumped, as well as some other VTxx systems I plan to dump.

Famicom/NES dumps / Help Emulating a Famiclone dump (gamezone 118 in 1)

For anyone just wanting to play this, this is a fixed ROM for Nintendulator with the banks swapped (I know this is a bad idea, but it works for now and it's named clearly).

I will remove this once an emulator with the proper mapper is available.

Just to be sure I am not getting things wrong: is "Fire Fighter" (game #118) really just a wacky name for a Super Contra variation?[/quote]I'm not sure, it seems quite possible for this kind of thing. I don't know if it's going to work when I put back together now either, I fear I damaged the PCB during desoldering.

Interesting, this was done by desoldering the flash chips and reading them with a universal programmer, inverted banks seem very unlikely (shorts between signals are the only fault I tend to see). Probably more likely a PCB variation. Thanks for finding this out so quickly! :)

I'm hoping this may be more obvious to people who've done more NES stuff, but I'm having trouble emulating the dump I've made of a gamezone 118 in 1 plug and play famiclone.

It's an older plug and play in the scheme of things (probably bought it a good few years ago second hand, the latest date on the PCB is 2003) - so it's not OneBus based as I was hoping. Inside it has two ROM chips, a 16MBit one that I think is for PRG and and the other 8Mbit one is for CHR. I've dumped both of them but I can't find an obvious fit in terms of existing mappers, but I don't want to spend ages reverse engineering if it turns out there's a working mapper already for this type of hardware. The PCB with the NOAC and ROMs on is marked "BELLESON" which could be Macro Winners (who I think use "BS" sometimes?)

Both ROM images are here, hopefully this isn't a bad dump:

Famicom/NES dumps / 300-in-1 SY-889 Handheld Dump (VTxx)

Yes, they have included their website into a number of games in many recent Famiclones, although their exact relationship to this product isn't known. I suspect they developed the software at least though.

If it's still apart, would you be OK posting some photos of the inside and what chips you can see?

It runs in EmuVT under the VT09 settings with some issues, otherwise you will need to build MAME from source, or wait for MAME 0.194 or NewRisingSun2's latest build of Nintendulator to be released.

Hopefully, a few people have developed a good base now, I might look at improving VTxx support in MAME (and possibly integrate my VT168 stuff too) if I'm able to find the time.

Just a head's up that I'm working on adding this system to MAME

https://github.com/mamedev/mame/pull/3069

At the moment I've sorted out palette and memory issues, but there are graphical glitches I think due to the scanline IRQ issues that NewRisingSun2 discovered.

The CPU core in those non-famiclone low res 1.8" systems is a 65C02, the same as a GameKing, although that could easily be a coincidence. Their music also sounds quite similar.

Perhaps some developers from TimeTop, who I think no longer exists, also did games/hardware for these new systems?
