Pirate Talk / famiclones are still alive?
« on: January 05, 2014, 04:50:00 PM »
Here in the midwestern USA, I see them in independently owned used game stores and record stores that sell used games as an alternative to buying a used NES, so you can get a brand new system for a slightly lower cost than the pre-owned one that often needs new pins. Lately, though, they're usually the triple machines, the ones that play SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive games, too, so I'm not sure if that counts or not. They are at least machines that include current Famiclones, though.

School dreams are the absolute worst! I had a dream the night before last that I had to go back to the high school I substitute taught at for part of my grad school finals this semester, to be an undercover student. I did well on the tests, which were about vocab and picture matching in every class, but everyone accused me of being a cheater for doing so well. Plus, the classrooms all had see through walls and floors and everyone was freaked out that the sun had quit going down. I had an awesome log cabin with a huge TV instead of my rubbish on campus apartment, though, so looking back on the dream, I feel like I should have been less upset to be accused of cheating on the vocab test when I had a cool house.

Please, PLEASE, can you digitalize those PiQ magazines?[/quote]They're at my house and I'm at school, but my winter break starts late next week, so I should be able to do it then. I just need to remember to take my scanner with me, and it should be no problem! It was a really cool article, so it's disappointing that it ran in a magazine that wasn't more successful.

Pirated Work / Stupid fake Bootleg Famicom carts I made.

I hope that theoretical Rockman 4 cart is a theoretical Mega Man themed Wall Street Kid hack. That would be awesome.

Pirate Talk / When did you first come across pirate games?
« on: December 10, 2013, 10:11:30 PM »
A few years ago, I read an article on Chinese RPGs in PiQ magazine, which lasted a whopping three issues, that mentioned the Famicom FFVII, and I thought that was interesting. I didn't find out much about them as a whole until later, though, when my dad bought a Famiclone at a used record store and I was having some trouble getting it to work. The instructions didn't mention that you needed to put the games on top of an adapter backwards and *then* put them in the machine, but since the instructions pretty much said that the machine needed to be plugged into the wall, that lack of information shouldn't have been a surprise. One of the information sources that I found on the system came from this wiki, though, which got me reading more about Famiclones in general and the games that you guys were posting about. I thought that the sprite art for the demakes in particular was really cool, so that's how I became interested in the games.

Mega Drive/Genesis / AtGames originals
« on: November 21, 2013, 01:46:05 PM »
All right, nifty! I did my best to divide this list by developer, when possible, and title screen commonalities when developer information was not given. Though my photos, taken with a 3DS of an old fashioned TV/VCR, are not the best, I hope that they can provide some sort of information about the games themselves. If you guys would like any other low-tech pictures of title screens/gameplay, let me know! I can provide some gameplay information on these if anyone needs it, too. I admit that I play the Genesis games far more often, but it's not at all a chore to click on the machine and play any of these for a little bit.

Tectoy/Devworks titles
Air Hockey
Bottle Taps Race
Cannon
Checker
Fight or Lose (This is the only one marked 2005- the rest are either 2000 or suffer from screen cropping at the last digit of the year)
Mr. Balls
Naval Power
Spider

AtGames Holdings, 2008
A lot of the "originals" on this machine are bad, but this set of games is blurry, unplayable, and plagued with the sort of music that makes you think of clowns murdering people.
Mahjong Solitaire
Memory
Snake
Warehouse Keeper

BS Comp Ltd./Padis Ltd. 1998
Chess

Slick interface- Matches the games previously discussed in this thread

Black Sheep
Brain Switch
Bulls and Cows
Color Puzzle
Dominant Color
Firefly Glow
Flash Memory
Formula Challenge
Logic Dial
Match Eleven
Mega Brain Switch
Memory Match
Mirror Mirror
Panic Lift
Reaction Match
Space Hunter
Sudoku Quiz
Table Magic
Treasure Hunt
Whack A Wolf

1 Player/2 Player/Instructions Title Screen Prompt

Bomber
Hexagonos (This is a bacterial infection themed game, but very board game-ish.)

Press Start/All Rights Reserved interface

Cross the Road
Curling 2010 (which is actually dodgeball, but fair enough)
Jack's Pea (AtGames stole the music from this and somehow made it terrifying for their Mahjong game)
Jewel Magic

Flashing "Press Start" Interface

Fish Story

Mega Drive/Genesis / AtGames originals
« on: November 21, 2013, 02:33:50 AM »
Hello! I apologize if this is an unfair bump, and if so, please feel free to delete my post. I have an AtGames Genesis with 40 of these original games on it hooked up to my TV right now, though- the ones that are listed here stand out to their relatively slick interfaces and non-horrific-nightmare-music, but some of them do seem a bit more disturbing, with strange, off key music and blurry graphics. The Freeway knockoff (I think it's called Cross the Road, creatively enough) even has a typo, which is a bad sign when the entire game only contains one line of text and it ends up being "All Rights Reserve." Would it be in any way helpful if I posted a list of these with the ones credited to Tectoy (which seems to be the only company willing to cop to these) marked off in some way, or are the contents of these machines pretty much common knowledge?

The Big Old Arcade / Worst ports of games to other consoles
« on: November 20, 2013, 09:58:56 PM »
After reading this topic and thinking about it for a bit, the least fun to play port I can think of is the Game Boy Advance version of SSX Tricky. The graphics were impressive, and looking at reviews from when it came out, it wasn't too badly regarded. I just always thought that it was dull and plagued with missing features to the point that it inspired me with vitriolic hatred, which is never a good sign. I was weirdly passionate about my love for the PS2 version of the game, though. If I were to go back and try the game again, I'm sure I'd be less inclined to condemn it, but it was such a flashy game that I'm not sure a GBA port was ever a proper fit for it.

Pirated Work / Pirated Game Cross Stitch
« on: November 19, 2013, 12:38:34 PM »
Hello again, and thank you for all of the kind comments! On its own, this one is not so interesting, but as part of the eventual best/most deranged dorm room Christmas tree ever, it is going to be awesome. This is a stitching (and recoloring, just for a few details) of Athena and Chizuru's non-battle sprites from KOF R-1 and R-2! I'm probably going to make a few more of them from these games, but I have the map sprites from a few other pirated RPGs waiting to be stitched as well, so I am really not sure.

Wow, that's cool, and I love the K' sprite! I don't know so much about programming, so this could be a really stupid question, but when you're working from different games and have size differences between sprites, are the hit boxes for the larger characters so out of sync with the smaller ones that it would make them easier to beat? Despite the stylistic differences, it looks like K' and Yuri are about the same size, but in the first screenshot set, it seemed like there were characters where that could become an issue. I could be totally off base, but I was curious about that!

This looks like it will be really cool! I realize that it's not an SNK port, but have you played Takara's Game Boy version of Battle Arena Toshinden? I'd say gameplay-wise that it's about as good as their Game Boy World Heroes, but I always thought that the sprites from it were very charming (and preferable to the graphics in the Playstation game). Regardless of that, I look forward to seeing more about this game!

Pirated Work / Pirated Game Cross Stitch

Thank you, to both of you, and I have to say, after trying to use real sprite ripping methods (rather than my usual wussy screenshot taking or letting Animget do it for me and then sorting things out later), I have nothing but respect for people who can actually pull the sprites out of games. The only game I've been able to get anything out of other than jumbled backgrounds and static on my own was Soul Falchion, and after I'd worked at it for three days and gotten half of Yuki-from-Last-Blade-but-with-a-turban's sprites, I decided that as far as getting my own sprites for crafting went, maybe the screenshot method was okay after all. Seriously, thank you for posting those sprites.

Pirated Work / Pirated Game Cross Stitch

Hello! I find pirated games to be fascinating, so I've lurked on this forum for a long time, but, until now, haven't posted anything due to a lack of technical know-how and a lack of anything insightful to say aside from that I think these games are cool. I am, however, capable of screenshot taking, image editing, and embroidery, so I've been able to use a lot of the graphics from these games for craft projects. The scaled down simplicity of the fighting game sprites in particular is really fun to work with, and though several of these projects feature recolors and, in one case, a few custom sprites, it's often just looking at the games or playing for a few minutes that makes me want to do something artsy and fun. I'm currently working on some stitching from the just posted Shenzhen Nanjing King of Fighters RPGs, but here are some of the pirated game craft projects that I've done so far.

I started learning about these games from an article about the Famicom version of Final Fantasy 7, so this recolored version of Aeris's portrait was my first project based on any of these games. She glows in the dark, so I guess that's something.

After that, I wanted to try something more ambitious, so I took the battle sprites for Aeris and Tifa, edited some of the blurry screenshots from the now reported to be fake Famicom FFX to get Yuna and Rikku's battle sprites into a stitchable form, and then made myself some custom sprites for Meena from Dragon Quest IV and Jessica from Dragon Quest VIII. This project still involved a lot of recoloring and custom stuff, but it was fun.

Soon after that, I found out that there were Famicom versions of King of Fighters, and that's when things got out of hand. This is a stitched (and still recolored) version of Leona's sprite from the King of Fighters '96 pirate-

-and a matching, but still recolored Mai, with her Game Boy counterpart. (Both of these are in alternate color schemes for the character because I'd done enough stitching of Mai to be sick of the standard red outfit.)

I did a lot of color editing on this one, but, as such, it's one of my favorite stitches from one of these games so far. The sprite is from the Fatal Fury Special pirate, which I think was much more flattering for her than the above game's depiction, and though I did add color to this like crazy, I was impressed by the shading and detail in the original graphic.

For Tracy here, I had some trouble getting Street Fighter IV screens due to flicker and such, so I have to thank King Pepe for ripping these sprites and putting them on Spriter's Resource. Then again, it was nice to stitch a character without having to huddle over the print screen button and image editors, so I have absolutely nothing to complain about in this case. I liked the color scheme that she had in Street Fighter IV, so she ended up avoiding a recolor.

I've done some perler bead stuff from pirated games, too, but I feel like this is out of hand, so I am done for now. Thank you very much for looking at my work!
