Also, I can't seem to find any nearby save/heal points after getting out of the first town. Maybe I'm just missing something, but it seems like there's hardly anything for several screens afterwards.

Where did you find the map through? I'm stuck because there's a chest that blocks a pathway inside a cave seen in Chapter 5. (The part after the large gate)
