Want to write a 10-page essay on NES bootlegs.
« on: May 04, 2015, 12:11:26 PM »
Hi, I'm new to this forum and studying Cultural Sciense and since we are to write essay I figured I wanted to bring up Bootleg games on the NES, companies, the developers and so on.

Problem is I need the sources from which you found out the information about the history of the companies and relation with others groups or background.

Sorry if I'm a bother.

Issue is I don't find a lot of sources for the facts you've found about the companies and such, and they demand sources for this essay. :(

It really depends on the article and the company - for those that still exist (or at least existed into the 2000s) it's often possible to find info on their own website (or Internet Archive copies of it), or from listings on trade sites like Alibaba.

Sometimes (rarely) people manage to talk to staff from the companies themselves, sometimes there's stuff on Chinese forums, old magazine articles, copyright/trademark listings, credit listings in games, hidden text in ROMs.. Or sometimes just similarities between the games themselves (say, they use the same sound engine, or the same fonts) are enough to give away a connection.

I do try to reference things where possible, eg this article has a few and other company-related ones do if you poke around, but I know a lot of the articles on there don't have anything.. so if there are some specific examples of articles or facts you want sources for, let me know and I'll see if I can dig anything up.

Thanks for the help, I was thinking of some of the more recognisable companies form the 90's like JY and Hummer team...

Altough I fear I will have to change the topic of my essay anyway. .___.

ah, well with Hummer Team & JY that was one of the rare cases where we actually got to speak to someone from the company: http://s4.zetaboards.com/PGC_Forums?topic=9613847/1/

A lot of other stuff was determined based on the games themselves, cart PCBs, stuff like that. There aren't really a lot of sources for this kind of thing, especially companies like JY which were pretty secretive due to the nature of their business.. That's also the reason a lot of it is missing from Wikipedia, they demand citations from reliable sources & we rarely have anything they consider "reliable", we do a lot of the research ourselves.

So, yeah, if you need to cite a bunch of sources, this probably isn't a good topic - sorry ):
